I wish I could do that because this isn't the first time I've had a problem with CEC. But I cannot--for some reason on my LG TV, HDMI ARC requires CEC to be enabled, even though they are separate settings.

I have a spare 90 degree HDMI adapter laying around. I'm going to try to just punch pin 13 out of that and see what happens. If it fixes the problem, then I'll punch out pin 13 on the HDMI cable itself.

If none of that works, I'll buy the Lindy adapter. We do have Lindy in the USA.

Definitely worth a go... There's always a way

I recently picked up one of these based on recommendations in the Lumagen thread. Must say, I am very impressed. Is there an advantage to ripping a backup copy and converting that to an iso or is it best just to leave it as a folder structure? I am using makeMKV and Imgburn and have just started populating my server with 4K titles. I have some MKV rips but prefer the option for a menu.

Stick with MKV on this player if you don’t want to be plagued with lack of forced subs and seamless branching issues. Menus are problematic too and it has trouble with obfuscated playlists.

I moved my 4T internal drive from my older Dune player to the Z10 and I think the Z10 is doing a better job of playing BluRay ISO files. The question for me is, do I take my other hi-def DVDs and put them on the hard drive because they will play better there than on my Sony DVD player?

If so, I am wary of converting them to another format like MKV because the files are smaller and I am suspicious of the conversion and how the Z10 will interpret them. Any opionions?

If you stick with ISOs on the Z10 you will come across problematic UHD/HD blu-Ray titles.
There are no issues with MKV, but you need to capture your audio and subtitle preferences.

How does the MKV quality compare with the original? Do you see any improvement between playing on a DVD machine and viewing the converted MKV on the Zidoo?

The MKV Remux has exactly the same PQ and AQ than the original disc, but without extras and menus.

In case you do your own remux, you can choose what to "put inside" the mkv file.

Perhaps your HDD is starting to fail? Have you run any maintenance tests on it to verify it is OK?

EDIT: Disregard this post. I reverted back to firmware 2.1.40 and all is back to normal. Thanks

Using firmware 2.2.61 I have an issue using zdmc with external player set. I posted this on zidoo forum but thought perhaps someone here might have an answer. My mkv files are on an SMB share of another computer. After I power up the z9s if I try to play a mkv via zdmc it will flash "loading" then pop back to the GUI. This persists for about a minute or so. Then it will start working and play the file. Once it starts working all is normal. But for whatever reason after start up it takes a minute or more before it will actually play a file. I assume it is some sort of network issue but not sure. Just wondering if anyone else is seeing this behavior or has any suggestions. My x9s is does not mimic this behavior and works on the first try after startup.

Here is the zdmc log that just shows a generic error. Any ideas on how to get better info?

So it appears to be an issue launching the "external" player which is of course the zidoo custom one. Maybe it is not able to read the network path for a short time for some reason? I guess I can try with HT2 to see if it also behaves this way or not. Any other ideas?

Thanks

I have multiple HDDs... all of them have similar issues on the Zidoo player.. but never on the Dune player... i have a suspicion that the HDD just stop running when dune isn't reading from it for a period of time?

I have seen that kind of delay when the disc is not active and it is usually just a few seconds to spin up the drive. That type of delay does not exit back to the GUI without starting the movie - it just pauses a bit before playback starts. This is much longer delay of a minute or more. It exits back to the gui right away and I have to try and start the movie again. It will fail multiple times in a row if I try again right away. If I wait a minute or so it will start the movie. I suspect it is due to the firmware that I updated recently so I could always revert that and see how it goes. I like a new feature in the firmware however so would like to figure this out. Probably specific to this firmware with SMB I suspect.

Thanks

EDIT: I reverted back to firmware 2.1.40 and all is back to normal. Thanks

Has anyone tried attaching a Blu-Ray DVD drive to the external SATA port. I keep wondering how the unit displays what seems to be a better image of an ISO than the Dune or my early BluRay player.

SDR to HDR mapping?

Discs are encrypted, so simply hooking up a drive isn't going to do anything useful.

Hey folks,

I am trying to get Home Theater 2.0 to work with my unRAID server. It works great with the server set to "public", however, I would like to have it operate in "private" mode. Is there a way to establish credentials (username/password) for this purpose?

i'm thinking about purchasing a z9s and the movie gui interface looks surprisingly nice (movie cover art etc.), i would like to use it instead of kodi if possible, do most zidoo owners use this built-in interface or do they go with a another one? also, if it has trouble identifying a ripped movie, is it easy to manually add the movie?

Generally these boxes aren't great for Kodi, but Zidoo used to maintain their own port, ZDMC, which although still available is now deprecated in favour of Home Theatre 2.0 (HT2) which I think most people use.

I don't usually like baked in interfaces, but HT2 is actually extremely good and certainly better than any other built in scraper I've seen. For the simple task of providing an elegant front end that lets you get to the movie with minimum fuss it works well. (I believe it's not so good for TV series, but I've never tried that).

It has its foibles, but you soon figure out how it works and if scraping fails it's very easy to correct it either on screen or through the web interface. If it absolutely fails with a really obscure movie that's not on TMDB for example, then you can use a Kodi nfo file and your own art to populate the database.

Indeed, if you want total control, you can use something like Tiny Media Manager to produce all the info/art and have HT2 use that instead.

Must admit I keep mine public for ease, but does HT2 not ask for credentials if you point it at a private share?

outstanding reply, very much appreciated!

i've tried both the shield tv pro and a nuc htpc (along with emby, kodi, plex, etc.) and haven't really been happy with the results... i know a lot of people love their shields but for someone like me who is 99% interested in movies when it comes to these boxes, the shield was a big disappointment and didn't "flawlessly play everything you threw at it" as many seemed to claim... i thought i hit with the nuc but at the end of the day it was simply too underpowered for some of the stuff i wanted to play, not sure how the zidoo didn't hit my radar until very recently.

performance is obviously a huge priority, but the movie library gui is also extremely important for my needs, so i was very pleasantly surprised to see (what i now know is ht2) movie gui, it looks pretty darn nice.

so do folks root their zidoo, or is there very little need to do so? thanks again!

Sounds like we've been down similar paths - I have a Shield gathering dust too (any many, if not all, the others...) - initially I thought it was great, but Kodi is such a PITA and the day the Shield stopped dead in the middle of a movie viewing was the day it came out of the theatre and never went back.

I've seen no need to root the Zidoo at all - I simply use it for it's primary purpose, playing movies and it does that flawlessly.

With one caveat though - it doesn't like BluRay menus or split playlists, but personally I see one of the main reasons for having a media server is to be rid of the damn things anyway, so no biggie.

I know others disagree .

the zidoo doesn't like bluray menus? then we're going to get a long just fine, i don't them either! and i agree, i consider that to be a major benefit of ripping my library, no damn menus and the ability eliminate other things like other languages and subtitles.

kodi? was fun at the beginning but i grew tired of it, towards the end it seemed that the only real benefit it offered was the ability to add shaky add-ons which i was never interested in... in fact, when it was all said and done, my least favorite front end became my favorite, plex, because it just seemed to work (altho it has its own issues too).

anyway, looking forward to zidoo, was starting to think that i was going to have to consider the $$$ kaleidescape for flawless movie playback, sans the benefit of being able to use my ripped library with it!

Just tried it here - added a test share on a NAS, made it private, added a user with read/write privileges and added to HT2.

HT2 asked for username/password and once entered, access is granted...

kodi? was fun at the beginning but i grew tired of it, towards the end it seemed that the only real benefit it offered was the ability to add shaky add-ons which i was never interested in... in fact, when it was all said and done, my least favorite front end became my favorite, plex, because it just seemed to work (altho it has its own issues too).

anyway, looking forward to zidoo, was starting to think that i was going to have to consider the $$$ kaleidescape for flawless movie playback, sans the benefit of being able to use my ripped library with it!

Haha! Scarily similar experiences... I even went down the K route back in the days of DVD and gaslight... There's a walled garden you don't want to be in even if you can stomach the cost!

wow, ht2 looks great:

nice not seeing a bunch of other "home media" categories such as photos, etc., just a clean movie interface! one thing tho, can you separate movies into categories?

EDIT: scratch my question, it appears that movies can be arranged by category!

You can't add user categories, but that's something a few of us have requested - one of the really nice things about Zidoo is they'll talk to you and work with you to iron out bugs.

I've had a couple of things added into the firmware and other stuff that hasn't made it, but it's an ongoing process as always with these things - I'm currently testing a new release with SDR.2020 which although niche, is of interest to some projector owners and you always get the feeling you're dealing with nice people who care about their product.

The movie files on my NAS are separated into 4K, Blu-ray and DVD categories, so using Filter works great for general sorting.

So, that’s flawless playback of MKVs. Is that really flawless then ?
One of the main reasons for playing from a media server is to be able to flawlessly play a collection including movies with blu-Ray menus, playlists, forced subs, obfuscated playlists e.g. as has been achieved with the Dune Pro 4K and the Oppo 203.
