It is not acceptable to have to restart ISO or BDMV folder playback because the first playback attempt glitches.
It would be OK if a later firmware release really was likely to fix those affected titles, but so far this seems not to be the case and there have been many firmware versions. Some ISO/BDMV titles don’t start no matter how many times they are restarted (John Wick UHD).
And without antagonism, malice, or disrespect directed at you it's quite predictable as John Wick is a Lionsgate title. Again the branching obfuscation scheme Lionsgate uses is problematic for even some BD players using the original disc.

So if you're using a Z9S, you probably want to rip any Lionsgate title as an MKV from the beginning, not fool around with an ISO, and just live without the menu for that title.

I currently have KDLinks A300, my primary use is that I have connected a 6Tb internal HD inside it & filled it with media content & have it connected to my television via HDMI.

I am looking to upgrade to a better device that plays most video formats & processes 4K content as smoothly as possible.

What is the best recommended replacement for an upgrade from KDLinks A300? Is it A400 or a device from another brand with the similar capabilities?

Other brand products I have been suggested are Zidoo Z10 & Himedia but I am a bit sceptical about them as I have had a decent experience with KDLinks.

If anyone who has tried multiple brands can advice which is currently the best & most reliable product for my needs, that would be great.

I finally got fed up with the Shield remote repeatedly losing it's connection to my Harmony hub, not waking up, etc., so I ordered a Zidoo. Really only needed (and would prefer the form factor of) the Z9S but they're not shipping until June on Amazon, whereas the Z10 will be here next week, so I went Z10.

Obviously I'll give the built-in software a test run. Hopefully I'll like it.

In the case that I don't, I've found that you can run Kodi and have it call out the Zidoo player. Is it possible to use the Plex app or Emby app and still call out the Zidoo player? I love the ability to run my system as a server/client setup, so I can handle all the file organization tasks at a PC, fixing titles and artwork that don't sync properly, etc.

Thanks! Looking forward to taking this thing for a test run.

I love my iPhone, but it will never replace my turntable. I've never seen Titanic OR XXXXXXXXX.

@markswift2003 Is there a good Movie Poster wiki somewhere?

Just set up my first Zidoo, a Z10, and I'm wondering if there's a way to mark my entire collection as viewed at once. And Why do only 3 titles actually show as UHD, and most have no resolution listed at all (is there a file naming convention required, or can it simply examine media properties)? And a few other questions.

I love my iPhone, but it will never replace my turntable. I've never seen Titanic OR XXXXXXXXX.

Can't help with a wiki I'm afraid.

Other than delving into the SQL database, there's no way to mark the entire collection as watched.

Titles only get marked with codec info, resolution etc when watched - mediaInfo is called only on watching, not scraping - this is a bit of a pain.

However, there is a way around it as you suggest using file suffixes.

A full list is attached and the naming convention is:

<filename>.<label1>.<label2>...<labelN>.ext

For example:

Aliens.mkv > Aliens.fhd.dts-hd.mkv
Attached Files
File Type: pdf HomeTheater Media Labels.pdf (20.4 KB, 32 views)

Thanks. That’s unfortunate. I think I’ll end up going with ZBMC, which I also got up and running last night.

I am, however, very pleased so far with the playback quality, responsiveness and capability. I have a handful of concert films that the Shield and AppleTV with various player software would not playback with the highest quality uncompressed DTSHD option at 5.1, and the Z10 didn’t even break a sweat.

The other big test will be tonight and seeing how easily it connects and functions with the Harmony Elite. The Shield would constantly lose BT connection and/or stick on a command.

If it’s a 2019 model you shouldn’t have too much trouble. They seem to be in short supply

I'm new to all of this, but it seems every streaming device has "issues." Maybe I should just go back to just connecting my Windows 10 computer to my monitor for streaming.

Streaming? I wouldn't classify the zidoo as a streaming device. ? More a digital media playback of various formats.

I can't think of anything worse than watching movies and tv shows on the small screen...

I think I mis-spoke. I've a large media library on stored on NAS and am looking for the best way to get them to my 60" TV.

Ah right! Sorry my mind immediately goes to that online over-compressed stuff when I hear streaming

Zidoo is fine for nas local network streaming but with isos, there are some issues. For full isos more so. but even for remux type isos, so main feature only, you can get the occasional cutout. It has been so long since I've used it though I'm not sure with the latest firmware if it is all good now for main feature isos. Full image isos I think some titles are problems, but I've never personally tried.

Oddly when I first got it, I didn't have any issues with 3d iso remuxes, but after a firmware update I did.

I still prefer to just use discs to be honest. All these other devices aren't as rock solid and without other issues.

I have no .iso files on hand to test. One of the big reasons I wanted to rip all my content was to skip past all that and just get to the movie. I want to sit in the comfort of the theater, be able to access everything on the projection screen, choose a title (if one hasn’t already been chosen), and then hit play.

For get-togethers (remember those?!?) I turn on the pre-roll function to add my theater promo and any other fun clips I might have for the evening.

It does, however, lock on solid with the Harmony, so I believe this is the box I will stick with.

Some studio's use a fortified DRM scheme known as playlist obfuscation AKA Screen Pass/Sony DADC. Simplistically, playlist obfuscation/Screen Pass presents multiple (sometimes over 100) incorrect playlist options on the same disc. If Java based (BD-J) does not see or detect the file as the original disc, it will select one of the incorrect playlist options by default. In the case of some media players, it can/will cause the unit to freeze/crash, display a drop out of audio/video, or play the incorrect playlist.

This scheme is BD-J software based and does not use/require hardware firmware updates making it a moving target to correct as each new disc can present its own new "seamless branching" issue. Even some Blu-ray players have problems with playback of the original disc with disc's using Screen Pass.

Reported "seamless branching" problems will always be related to titles using this protection scheme. Fortunately, it's very predictable as to what titles will give you this kind of problem with a full ISO and that is any title from Lionsgate Studio and some Disney/Pixar titles. Ironically some Sony titles use this but not all.

A full ISO rip will keep the Screen Pass protection intact and it will be up to the playback device's ability to navigate the BD-J hurtles Screen Pass presents.

Knowing this, if you rip titles from Lionsgate using an MKV container, the problem is eliminated as an MKV will result in a copy with only the correct playlist chosen and completely bypasses Screen Pass "seamless branching" issues. You will have to give up the menu options in this case but you will have successful playback of the complete movie.

Not sure why you would want the Z10 over the Z9S for streaming from NAS. The Z9S is the same hardware and lower cost as it does not have the internal HDD bay and doesn't really offer any additional features.

If you don't need a unit right this minute, you might want to wait for a few weeks as it's expected that both Zidoo and DuneHD will soon release new units with a new generation of Realtek SoC's with promised improvements especially for 4K. The problem at the moment is that there is no official release date.

The original post was in response to my post, talking about the Z10, which I'd guess is why he specifically called out the Z10. I only needed the Z9S capability, would've preferred the form factor of the Z9S, but the Z10 shipped immediately, and the Z9S was saying June.
MOberhardt likes this.

I love my iPhone, but it will never replace my turntable. I've never seen Titanic OR XXXXXXXXX.

The only device I can say has perfectly reproduced the original disc experience is an Oppo203 with the standard firmware, playing HD/UHD BDMV folders. I have had this player over a year and it has played every movie (including all the ‘screen pass’ cases) perfectly. Admittedly the standard firmware won’t play ISOs, but that’s only a minor drawback.
