Awesome. Gonna try and get one real soon then.
By the way, will the same HDMI cable work or do I need a new spec one.

My old HDMI cable worked. Since you’re going to do 1080p it should suffice. For atmos audio it’s also sufficient. But HDMI remains a bit of voodoo...

I am not having any luck, still no Atmos. Reset was done, software update done, and all I'm getting is 5.1 PCM. Everything is selected correctly in my Pre/Pro, enabled object mode surround - selected direct mode to access Dolby Atmos.

Looks like ATV is going back.

I just want to confirm that this update does also provide Atmos for the VUDU app. Based on a few scattered comments, it appears that is the case but I just want to make sure. Lack of ATMOS support is one of the things that has kept me from buying the ATV 4K and VUDU is my primary streaming source.

Yes, I am on the current tvOS12 and have been using ATMOS on the ATV 4K VUDU app. In fact, VUDU had ATMOS most the time that the iTunes ATMOS content was appearing and disappearing prior to the official release.

Is the Apple TV set up to output Atmos in the ATV audio/video section with no conversion enabled? I am using the ATV with a Marantz sr7010 and I have gotten consistent Dolby Atmos output from the Apple TV after the TVOS update.

I am uncertain as what you mean "no conversion". Atmos is enabled in the ATV4K setup menu and reads on.

On the surround sound sub-menu, there is an optional convert format option that should be "off"

Thanks very much for the extra effort(JPEG), I'm not at home ATM but if I recall correctly when I went to disabled this a menu stated it would turn off Dolby Atmos.

I'll double check tonight

Thanks again.

Edit: set up: is done correctly, I'll rent an iTunes movie to see if I get Atmos. Not sure what else there is to do other than an exchange for a new ATV4K

Man, this makes me think twice about upgrading mine if I encounter this. Anyone else with a 1080p tv and AT4K and a yamaha 2070 have atmos working flawlessly?

I'll add JPEG's later when I have time, I'm beginning to think this is payback since I always would praise dts over Dolby Digital when dvd came out

Finally getting Dolby Atmos from Netflix now. I didn't have the UHD subscription, just HD. Image is washed out when viewing and most likely will cancel and return to HD til I get a 4K projector.

I have the same issue. ATV4K (TVOS12) with Atmos enabled in settings, Netflix with UHD Plan, but it will only ever show 5.1. This is because the TV itself isn't 4K. As far as I can tell, there is no way to get Atmos on 1080p on either Netflix or Prime when using ATV. Although Amazon makes it next to impossible to find the UHD/Atmos version of anything so I don't know if its not an option or i just haven't found a way to stumble into the right content.

EDIT: Well, i decided to just play Lost in Space and despite saying 5.1 on the menu, it played in Atmos. When i went back and browsed around, then came back to LiS, it showed Atmos in the menu. I guess i had to "prime the pump" or something. As an aside, surprised the new show Maniac isn't Atmos.

Now, Prime Video is another story. Haven't cracked the code on how to get Atmos out of that on either ATV4k or ShieldTV

I immediately received Atmos once I upgraded my subscription. I had to go into my video settings to turn of dynamic range to get the image quality I was accustomed to. I'll rent a movie from iTunes to see if I get atmos

Man was I such a fan of dts, I had sweatshirts, lapel pins, and a wall poster. To me, Dolby Digital in most cases sounded better. Theatrically dts was far superior, but in the home the difference was negligible.

Yes. DD had a much more efficient codec than DTS had. Since DD at a lower bitrate than DTS sounded the same.

dts claimed that Dolby Digital track was remixed and different than the theatrical release compared to the dts track which was untouched and not remixed. The dialog in the DD track to me sounded better.

Latest Onkyo firmware for (at least) 2017 models fixes Atmos for me.

That's the 1091-xx version released yesterday.

My TX-NR676 now sees Atmos instead of PCM and yeah the red indicator on the Display is now on.

Onkyo TX-NR676E | 5.1 speakers : Technology Master Audio Compact 10 & 20 + Klipsch RSW 12 sub | Philips 42PFL5038/H12 | PS4 Pro | Xbox One S | HTPC based on AMD A10-6700 APU and Win 8.1 x64 | Apple TV 4K | Amazon Fire TV 4K | Sonos: 2 x CONNECT:AMP + CONNECT | QNAP TS-451 + TS-131P

From the looks of it either Apple or Yamaha has a bug which prevents a PCM stream with Atmos metadata from being recognised on the RX-V2077 / RX-A2040 and similar generation of models. It doesn't look like it's an interconnect issue given that Onkyo has had similar issues and has updated their firmware to improve compatibility. I've also tested a variety of cables, so there's that too.

I'm betting it's on Yamaha's side, my best guess is that the amp is expecting a raw Atmos bitstream and while it can probably theoretically decode a PCM stream with Atmos metadata, it hasn't been updated to recognise that particular combination as a valid format. I've submitted bug reports to both Apple and Yamaha, if anyone else is having issues I'd encourage you to do the same.

It's not really acceptable for an Atmos-compatible amplifier bought specifically for its Atmos support to not support the format it claims to. I'm hopeful that if it's on Yamaha's end they'll match Onkyo and update their firmware to support it.

If it's on Apple's side I'm sure they'll work out what's going on as they go through field teething issues.

Being a bit more specific, my money's on the RX-V2077 / RX-A2040 not knowing what to do with a MAT 2.0 stream.

MAT is part of the Atmos standard with the earliest documentation I can find from August 2014 so I'm pretty sure this should be seen as a product flaw, not an issue with standards changing over time. I'm optimistic on Yamaha doing the right thing and updating the firmware.

If not there's always a small claims option for deceptive marketing given that the amplifier doesn't support the certification it claims to.

MAT is part of the Atmos standard with the earliest documentation I can find from August 2014 so I'm pretty sure this should be seen as a product flaw, not an issue with standards changing over time. I'm optimistic on Yamaha doing the right thing and updating the firmware.

If not there's always a small claims option for deceptive marketing given that the amplifier doesn't support the certification it claims to.
might be possible that atmos on that atv4k is lumped in with a hdcp2.2 check which I believe the 2040 is 1 year to old for hdcp2.2 in which case the monoprice converter will work. Im curious what response you get from apple/yamaha

That's the 1091-xx version released yesterday.

My TX-NR676 now sees Atmos instead of PCM and yeah the red indicator on the Display is now on.
I never had any problem getting Atmos with my 2016 Onkyo. I wonder why there was an issue with 2017 models?

It's possible that it's related to HDCP 2.2 but I think it's unlikely - Atmos signals work fine from other sources, it's more likely a coding oversight around a an edge case.

There's also some discussion in the official XX40 thread that shows it's a general problem. Someone else also submitted a bug report to Yamaha about a week ago and has heard back that their design team is looking into it. I've also left a note in the XX50 thread to see whether anyone is successfully using the Apple TV w/ Atmos on an XX50 amp, as I'm curious to know whether it's a cross-platform bug or whether it's isolated to the XX40.

Take this at face value (as I haven't personally seen the source) but the same person also indicated that some Pioneer amps are having similar issues and that Pioneer has said they'll release an update to fix it.

With any luck we'll get an update in a week or two and things will be where they should be!

Was that Atmos via the Apple TV or Atmos in general?

Folks,

My ATV 4K is connected to my Denon X2200W and both the devices have the latest/greatest firmware that supports Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos. I am seeing a strange thing though when I play non-Atmos movies from my iTunes movie collection (both streaming or using my Infuse app). For all non-atmos movies, my Denon only displays PCM & plays 2-channel stereo. On the ATV 4K, if I turn OFF Dolby Atmos (change format ON to DD 5.1), then the non-atmos movies play in the format they are encoded in DD 5.1 etc. However I lose the ability to play Dolby atmos encoded streams if dolby atmos is turned OFF. Has anyone seen this issue with ATV 4K and their Denon AV receivers and if there are any settings I need to tweak to get this to work properly. I hate going into settings to switch things manually when I play a non dolby atmos encoded stream & vice-versa. Any help on this issue is greatly appreciated.

Mine is not operating that way. Can you post screenshots of your audio setting pages?

Amazon updated their Prime app to now offer Dolby Atmos. I tested it with Jack Ryan and it played Atmos. As far as I know, Jack Ryan is the only show on Prime to offer Atmos.
