I hope that I am wrong here.

The Fire tv 3 pendant only says Audio: AAC-LC, AC3, eAC3 (Dolby Digital Plus), FLAC, MP3, PCM/Wave, Vorbis, Dolby Atmos (EC3_JOC)

And lossless pass through has been reported to work with kodi and plex so there is still hope.

For DTS MA/X and Dolby TrueHD/ATMOS from BD & UHD rips? Don't think so.

There is zero reason for Amazon to offer that and pay more in royalties as well. And especially at the price point of $50, and based on past FireTV devices, I would be shocked it the had lossless Atmos/DTS:X capability.

So basically only choices today for rips passthrough are:
- Dune 4K
- nvidia shield

And maybe Apple TV 4K if Apple decide to fix it

Did I miss any streamer? Trying to buy one and are weighting my options. Was really excited by this $50 new amazon streamer before

There are zero fees for passthrough. Only decoding would cost them.

There are several other ones like Zidoo 4K HDR lineup, Egreat A5 or Zidoo Z10. Just to name a few.

It’s not about fees it’s about the nature and intent of the device. It’s not about playing ripped files. Look at how they market device.

Then look at many BD players that can bitstream lossless audio from a disc. Yet they won't play back Lossless Dolby Atmos but will DTS lossless from network and USB drives.. If BD players don't do it, it's not likely a mass market $50 streamer will. And based on past history with Amazon streamers, they don't either. But I guess you never know. We will find out in a couple of weeks.

But then also based on past history of FireTV releases. They usually have the audio borked at release. And it takes them a couple of months to fix it. So Im expecting not to really be able to use the new FireTV 4K stick until December. If it follows the previous 4K FireTV releases.

Yeah because it’s exactly like @sutton8 says:
It’s not meant to do that. So aren’t BD players for network or usb playback. Just curious: can you name a BD player which does DTS HD passthrough via network or usb but does not TrueHD. Is this via mkv or m2ts?
Same principle applies to ATV when it comes to HD audio.

So Nvidia Shield it is then. Expensive for just this function! Damn

I've owned bunch over the years. Currently my Sony UHD BD player and my Philips UHD BD player fall into that category. They bitstream lossless DTS but not lossless DD.
The Sony can be set for pcm output and decode it. And the Philips can reencode to a lossy format.

I'm concerned about frame rate matching.

TV must support minimum HDCP requirements for protected content playback. Compatible with 1) 4K ultra high-definition TVs with HDMI capable of 2160p at 24/25/30/50/60 Hz and HDCP 2.2 or 2) high-definition TVs with HDMI capable of 1080p or 720p at 50/60 Hz. Learn more.

The way it is worded sounds like 24hz playback is only supported on 4K tv's.

Can anyone confirm that this thing supports 1080p/24hz?

Amazon is doing trade-ins for old streaming devices where you get $20 off the new stick. I traded in a gen 1 chromecast.

I did the deal where I got the FireTV 4K stick and the 3rd Gen Echo dot for $80. Which saved $10 off each one.

Although since I see the Chromecast can be used as a trade in. I might pick up a second FireTV 4K stick as long as I can get it for $30 with the Chromecast trade in. Then I will trade in another one of my original FireTV sticks for $9 cash at Gamestop.

I see I could also use a ROku. I have multiple ROkus, Chromecasts, and FireTV Sticks all over the place. I wish I could trade them all in at $20 a pop.

EDIT: Nevermind. It's only showing a trade in value of $2.99 for a Chromecast.

EDIT: WTH?!?! Something isn't right. It's also showing $2.99 for an ATV 4K trade in.

EDIT: Whoops! I see how it works. You trade it in for $2.99 and get a gift card for $2.99. But then you also get $20 off the FireTV stick 4K. So I guess it will work for me. For only $27 for second FireTV 4K stick, I might as well get it.

I wouldn't pay more than $30 for one anyways. Worth it for the remote alone, especially if it works with the Shield.

Thanks for the tip! I am sending in an original Chromecast also. t would be nice if they also let you take off $20 from the stick/dot combo, but I will take the $20 off the stick.

Passthrough did not work on the new cube. I left a review on Amazon (1 star for so many reasons) and the engineers called me. It's not impossible, but they want to keep mixing audio

I'll have one in a week to test out anyways.

What I'm really interested in is if I can get the Kodi Netflix add on to work with Dolby Vision.

If it only outputs 24fps and not 23.97 I probably won't use it all that much.

This device needs to work on Vudu or it's useless to me.

Looks like Netflix now supports Dolby Vision on fire tv stick 4k according to their list.
https://help.netflix.com/en/node/42384

Still no Dolby Atmos for Netflix though on fire tv stick 4k. Hopefully that will be added soon.
