Have you tried MrMC? Curious if that will pass Atmos or DTS:X.

So far, it reads as if the stick will give me no extra functionality over WebOS on my 2017 LG OLED. Netflix and Amazon prime all do Dolby Vision. While Xplay will play UHD rips, but with regular DD or DTS audio.
I would test but it doesn't work with my receiver. I have an Onkyo 676.

I have my new Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K connected directly to my Marantz SR7010 receiver, which is passing audio and video to my LG OLED65E6P. I watched an episode of The Haunting of Hill House on Netflix last night and got Dolby Vision fine, but I had three audio dropouts, which I've never had with Netflix until last night. So I am going to try a couple ethernet adapters and see if that helps. Does anyone have any other suggestions for this issue?

I also had a couple settings questions. Is there a set of recommended settings for this device? Perhaps it is it too early to tell? Or are they the same as the previous ones? If it is the latter, where can I find those?

I set my Color Depth to "Up to 10 Bits" for my display, which again is an LG OLED65E6P, is that correct?

Finally, and this is just a personal preference at this point, it seems like Fire TV Stick 4K defaults to force everything out into HDR whether the material was intended to be in HDR or not. Maybe it was just the menus. I turned that setting to automatic or the equivalent for now.

So after seeing that all content I tried last evening was in HDR DV I went to settings and it set to force everything to DV. Changed the setting to Adaptive. Not that the content looked bad, it actually looked great.

Sony XBR-75X900F, Marantz SR6012, Rotel RMB-1095, Monster HTS3600MKII, Klipsch RF-5, RC-7, RS-7, RP140SA, Dual SI-18 DIY Subs, Behringer EPX 4000, Crown XLi 1500, Fire Stick 4 K.

Wi-Fi speed as measured using the Netflix speed test is +150 Mbps. Streaming is smooth as silk.

I'm pretty sure that the default setting for the fire stick is to show everything in DV. I noticed that as well, but when i set to Adaptive, I only get DV via Prime.

For some reason, Netflix kicks in HDR, but I'm only getting 1080p. Probably something I got set wrong.

As is stands now though, I think this is the 1st time with my setup that I've been able to stream anything in both DV & Atmos. I've got a 4k player that I think does this also but I haven't been buying many UHD BD's lately so I don't use it much anymore.

Interestingly enough the Vizio TV's system menu says "Dolby Atmos" for Jack Ryan so apparently the TV pass it no problem.

Anyone have the Vudu apk off a Sony TV w/DV? The apk on APKMirror only plays back the movies you own in HDX (no 4k), you can't rent through it.

Mark- I see you said you got Vudu working with 4k/DV on the stick? I sideloaded the latest Android TV APK off APKMirror- should work, but it's kind of crippled for me.

Hmm, no 4k on Netflix either, just 1080p w/DV. Odd. This is with it plugged directly into my Vizio P65-E1. Amazon plays UHD content just fine.

Ahhh. YouTube 4k/60Hz HDR. Sweet!

Nevermind- got it all working. Had to reset the stick, TV, etc.

Pretty snappy. Very quick- wifi works better now that it's not jammed up behind my receiver. Not great, but ok.

Vudu no go- Encountered Problems During Playback- please try again.
For Vudu... I'm using 4.1.23.60526 which also worked on my 2nd Gen Fire TV Box.... It DOES do DV/ATMOS/UHD when the 4K Stick is connected to my Sony XRB65X900F in the family room (that TV supports DV), and the Vudu app shows HDR when attached to my Sony XBR43X800D in the bedroom that doesn't support DV. With the 4K Stick it also seems I need to be using an ethernet adapter or I get errors when trying to start playing a movie.

When trying 4.2.53.116291 (the newest version), or 4.2.52.110309 (one back, which works great on my cube for HDR/ATMOS/UHD) on the new 4K Stick, it immediately errors trying to play SD/HDX/UHD movies wireless or wired.

Did resetting the stick get rid of the flashing, etc. when plugged into receiver? or are you still direct in TV.

which version of Kodi are you using on the Fire TV? Do you have older Fire TV models and does it work ok on them (particularly interested in 1st and 2nd gen Fire TV boxes)

And side question if you don't mind answering... are you using MakeMKV to rip your UHD's or something else?

Do we think this will also work if we put a USB3.0 hub inline so I can also add a FLIRC adapter?

In other words, I want fast wired ethernet, but also need an additional USB port to hook up the FLIRC device to use my IR Harmony.

What settings do you have for audio? When I tried my Harry Potter UHD mKV rips I got DD+ from the stick. So then I tried a couple of legacy DTS test files, and I still only got DD+. I couldn't get it to output DTS.

There is an HDR setting on the Stick. Once set it will switch automatically between SDR, HDR0, and Dolby Vision.

It does seem Odd that the stick would come with DV enabled for all content as the default.

The default is HDR. On my DV capable TV it output everything in DV. On my HDR10 only TV, it output everything in HDR10. Until I changed it in the setting so it would output SDR, HDR10, and DV for the proper content.

I can already break the 100mbos barrier using wireless. It is Rock solid on both of my Sticks and allows play back of UHD BD rips to play flawlessly. Or even 100mbps+ bitrate videos as well. Although since the stick can't bitstream Dolby True HD or DTS-HD MA, it really not a device I would use to play back my UHD BD MKV rips.

Yeah, that's what I was trying to say, I just worded it wrong. Should have said it shows everything in HDR or DV.

The point I was making was that when set to default, the stick sends everything out in HDR or DV, regardless of what the source is, making it seem like the source is HDR/DV.

@aaronwt , are you getting 4K from Netflix when set to adaptive? Not sure why I'm only getting 1080p, even though the DV kicks in properly. I've been using Sabrina for testing.

Yes. I am getting 4K from Netflix. Dolby Vision shows up as well. The issue I had was with Plex. If I set Plex to framerate match then the Stick would down convert it to 1080P for output. But if I set Plex to just output 60P, then the stick would output at 2160P from Plex.

And then I use two Asus RT-N65U routers in AP mode. And then I also use two Asus RT-ACRH13 routers in AP mode. All my wireless UHD devices connect to one of the RT-ACRH13 APs. Since they have wireless AC capability.

So including the Asus I use as an actual router, i use five Wireless Access Points. So every device has maximum signal strength and no congestion. So every device can get a rock solid signal and excellent speeds over wireless.

But I also have around seventy wireless devices. So without having multiple Access Points, things would grind to a halt over wireless.

Still no Vudu playback.

Unfortunately no- I even did a factory reset on the stick 2x and it did nothing- still blanks out- flickering black screen. Seems like an HDCP issue. Once again, none of my other Dolby Vision devices have this and they're both using cables, not connected directly to the device like the stick, so either Amazon needs to fix this, Onkyo, or both.

Sure it's nice to have it connected directly to the receiver, but unless someone ever figures a way to get lossless audio out of the 4k stick it really doesn't matter- my Vizio can pass DD/DD+/DTS over ARC just fine.

One thing I can't get it to do is pair with my Harmony Hub. It just doesn't happen regardless of how close I put the Hub to the stick.

probably not inline like a chain. what you would do is use the hub with the OTG adaptor and then plug the ethernet adapter into the hub. that should work.

That is what I'm hoping for... for that "package"... move the ethernet dongle and FLIRC device into the hub, and plug the hub into the "pigtail" part which is of course connected to the Stick and power.

I have an ethernet adapter with 3 USB ports on it. I'll try out my Flirc in it later.

Are you using wired or wireless for network? For me, I must use wired. I got errors when wireless.

As for the flickering and flashing, not sure if you saw, I added a HDMI repeater (by Monoprice) on the TV end of my HDMI cable and that fixed it. My Cube doesn't need it, but the stick does. My Sony UBP-X800 player also needed it due to cable length through the wall (but even with repeater, the Sony can't be fed through the receiver, the 4K Stick can).

No worries. I have a amazon basics hub with FLIRC, Logi Keyboard, USB stick and ethernet being used on my cube, and a hub with FLIRC and Logi keyboard on my FireTV 2 (box), so I'm just hoping to replicate on 4K Stick

Nvidia Shield TV
  • Kodi - DTS audio signal on receiver and receiver app
  • Plex - DTS-HD MR
Fire Stick 4K
  • Kodi - DTS

So far, it reads as if the stick will give me no extra functionality over WebOS on my 2017 LG OLED. Netflix and Amazon prime all do Dolby Vision. While Xplay will play UHD rips, but with regular DD or DTS audio.
Haven't yet but will try it out today

And side question if you don't mind answering... are you using MakeMKV to rip your UHD's or something else?

  • Using Kodi 17.5, will update to 17.6 today
  • Don't have those older Fire TVs
  • Yep, using MakeMKV to rip UHDs

With or without ethernet adapter it flickers. Plugged directly into the receiver with no dongle it still flickers.

my bad.. I mean Vudu... when trying Vudu, are you wired or wireless? For me, I installed Vudu, got the error, decided to try wired... unplugged power from the stick, connected network adapter, powered back on and tried and it was working... but only with that older version.

At this point.. I'm spinning my wheels... All apps I have/use are working. The screen flicker when running through my receiver can be solved by adding a HDMI repeater ($25), but then I need to add usb OTG cable that also can do power(need to buy), usb hub (i have a left over amazon basics usb2.0 i can use), wired ethernet(need to buy) and FLIRC(I have) for it. At least all this can be hid behind the audio equipment then. If I left the Cube in the family room (with the 900F TV that supports DV&HDR), and put the stick in the bed room (on the 800D TV that doesn't support DV), I don't need the repeater, but would need to deal with the rest, and the HDMI ports are on the side of the TV so the stick would stick out beyond the end of the TV and be visible and also impacts my keeping the TV in the cabinet (due to width). OR I can just stick with my 2nd Gen FTV Box (and no HDR) in the one room for "free"

Have you tried changing from the default RGB colorspace output to YCbCr?

I have mine set for YCbCr at 12bit so it will output 422 for non Dolby Vision content. Of course DV content is still output as RGB.
