Nice. Too much to ask for lossless pass-though?

Also hoping for refresh rate matching like the ATV4k.

YouTube HDR?

It should have refresh rate matching. Just like the current FireTV 4K Pendant has.

I really want to get this for both Dolby Vision and Atmos but at the same time hate it because they could just give both on ATV4k.

I don't know if it will. I don't think the older Fire TVs could passthrough audio with Kodi or Plex. Unlinke the ATV4k it can bitstream DD/DTS/DD+ properly.

Specs say VP9, not VP9.2, so YouTube HDR looks unlikely. Or they just forgot the ".2" The lack of TrueHD/DTS-MA in the specs makes lossless support unlikely as well. "Hardware accelerated up to 3840x2160p (4K) @ 60fps, 35 Mbps" means this isn't for playing UHD backups. It's for Netflix/Prime/Hulu streaming.

Perfect for someone like me that can't bring himself to buy anything from the Cupertino Cult. At $50, it's a low-risk investment.

Wouldn't count on it. FTV pendant uses AMLogic S905Z, and the new Stick 4K uses MediaTek chip (MT8695).
AFTVNews has confirmed (see link below in another post) from Amazon that framerate switching will be supported. Hopefully 23.976fps properly as well (not just 24.000).

I can't find specific specs on the Mediatek MT8695 SoC. But I would be surprised if their new, 12nm, SoC can't handle VP9.2. Considering some of their older SoCs can.

As Brajesh mentioned, the new stick uses a Mediatek SoC. And I guess before it was an Amlogic SoC. So maybe the Mediatek chip will work out better?

Of course, like the last few FireTv devices, I expect issues. The last few were released without the multi-channel audio working properly. And it took them a couple of months to get fixed. So based on past history I am expecting the same thing. But i'm hoping it actually works correctly from the beginning. Or is that too much to ask from Amazon?

my guess is lan on gremlins... they know about the audio drop outs and issued an update that was supposed to fix it.. nope..

I'm guessing Amazon won't do a thing to upgrade previous Fire TV devices to Dolby Vision. It can be done via a firmware update, can it not? I recently got my girlfriend a Fire TV Cube and the lack of Vision is my main complaint. It's also too late to return it. Wish it had it.

My UHD TrueHD/DTS-MA 60-80 Mbps backups play perfectly well with my current Fire TV 3 pendant so I expect this should be able to do the same. I'm using Kodi and passing through the audio to my receiver.

I just got my 4K Ultra Fire TV pendant last weekend on sale for Prime customers for $39. Went to order a second one last night and see the 3rd gen pendant is officially now discontinued, and replaced with the 4K stick with new remote with volume control. Hmmmm.

Customer service offered an exchange as we've had it 3 days, with a $10 up charge from $39 - $49, on the unit I just got, and a $10 discount if a purchase a second 4K fire stick.

After an afternoon of discussion, we are keeping the pendant, purchasing a new remote $29 with volume control, and ordering one 4K fire stick. The new Fire Stick, and additional remote arrive 10-31. It does seem the pendant uses the preferred processor, so I'm glad to keep it, and the newer remote allows me to only need 1 remote in the bedroom.

Not if Dolby refuses the certify the hardware (SOC), or if the R&D needed is not cost effective. Generally speaking, the SOC has to be certified up front by Dolby, before the device is even sold.

I just ordered my FireTV 4K stick from Amazon. I used the combo deal for the Fire TV 4K stick and the 3rd gen Echo Mini for only $80 for both. I figured a $20 savings was a very good deal making them both only $40 each..

I thought Vision could be done in software now. I imagine if certification is still needed the requirements wouldn't be as stringent and something the very new Fire TV Cube could handle.

The hardware has to be able to run the software. The VP in the cube is actually pretty old.

The real question is will them let passthrough Dolby atmos and Dolby vision ( bitstream or pcm) to your software (Kodi/Plex) then soundbar/receiver when the source is one mkv files

Apple TV does not do it
Dune 4K and nvidia shield do

Pendant supports ATMOS for Amazon Prime content only (maybe Netflix, not sure). Not for Kodi, Plex or MrMC. And, it's a web protocol variety, not the type one gets with Blu-ray and UHD discs.

Apparently it will not support passthrough of atmos. (

It will support Dolby Digital Plus with Atmos but will not support Dolby TrueHD with Atmos. Amazon only listed Atmos (EC3_JOC) coupled with E-AC-3 in their specs. There is zero mention of Atmos coupled with TrueHD.

I hope that I am wrong here.
