Dune HD Smart D1 - Looking for 4K replacement

I have a Dune HD Smart D1. It still works great! I solely use it to stream my ripped HD Blu-Rays, and home video's. All my content is stored on an UnRaid server. All movies are full ISO with full BD menus. Everything is hardwired Ethernet. The Smart D1 is hooked up to a Denon x4200 AVR (4K compatible) and then fed to a Sony HD projector with a fiber optic HDMI cable.

I will soon be replacing my projector with a 4K model. So, I will be looking to replace or add another player that is 4K compatible. I want it to work with my ISO's and Full BD menus.

Should I stick with another Dune? If so which one is best for me? I know there's a Dune Solo 4K (almost 3 years old now, is there a newer model with same or better features?), Or, any other suggestions? It has to support ISO and full BD menu support. I don't need streaming apps, that's taken care of with my Roku and ATV.
Thanks!

Thanks! I'm assuming the Z9S would be a better choice than the Solo 4K? The Solo 4K is not in the chart, probably too old?

Not sure, but I started the list last year, so it probably wasn’t a current Dune model at the time.

The Solo can play 4K, but doesn’t do HDR.

Thanks, that's probably a good enough reason to get a Z9S for future proofing. I currently have over 200 HD Blu-Rays ripped to full ISO's, and every one plays the full menus perfectly on my Dune HD Smart D1. Also, I currently use "My Movies". Would I now instead use what ever comes with the Z9S? I guess that's not real important. I'm hoping the Z9S will give me a good experience and compatibility like the Dune has. But, if I want to view 4K home movies and rip my 4K UHD Blu-rays I have to choose something new?

I don't know what you mean with 'HD blurays'? I assume regular, 1080P standard definition blurays.
UHD's are 4K bluray's with or without HDR (high dynamic range).
UHD's and Blurays are NOT the same.

The Dune 4K Solo DOES do bluray menu's, it DOES NOT do UHD bluray menu's.
The Smart D1 also does NOT do UHD menu's. It WILL do bluray menu's.

Yes HD means 1080P
Yes, UHD is 4K
Yes, for sure, UHD and HD Blu-Rays are not the same.
I understand all this, and is why I'm using the terms HD and UHD, hoping everyone else understands, which I assumed they would if they follow these forums.
And yes, I know the Solo 4K does not do UHD menus.
I want to make sure what ever I get is compatible with my current HD ISO rips.
Thanks, I think we are for sure clear on what we are talking about.

Using HD for bluray is confusing. To me, HD as in High Definition, also means 1080P mkv etc.
Defacto we talk about Bluray and UHD. Maybe also not so logical, since UHD are Ultra HD blurays... but we don't use the term HD bluray. Just Bluray.

Over here we have always used HD as 1080P, because the term Blu-Ray is used for both HD and UHD.
But doesn't matter as long as we are on the same page when discussing.

HD can also mean 720P, it is not exclusively a bluray term. Technically 1080P is called 'full HD'.
You wonder what they will gonna call 8K since 4K is ultra HD

HD can also be 1080i which you do find on the odd Blu Ray...

Yes, HD is anything between 720 and 1080.
OK, now back to the original question. Will the Z9S work with all my HD ISO rips with Full Menus? Just like my current Dune HD Smart D1?

Short answer, yes.

I have a Dune HD Smart D1, a Dune HD Solo 4K, and both the Zidoo X9S/Z9S. Both Zidoo units playback Blu-ray HD ISO with full menus.

Thanks!! Appreciate it!
Being that you own all those, what do you prefer?

Well...

The D1 is the slowest. It still works quite well however. I somehow lost the functionality/support for running the Zapaiti juke box video wall. No fault of Dune or the unit. The D1 will run Dune's "My Collection" video wall but Dune wants to collect a monthly fee for using it and I refuse to pay for that privilege.

The Solo 4K does everything that the D1 does only faster in a smaller package albeit in a small plastic box. It adds support for UHD 4K video but it does not handle HDR very well. Dune uses their own algorithm for HDR-SDR; it works but there are problems. It does not support UHD menus. The Solo 4K does come with a full licence for Dune's "My Collection" juke box and it works quite well.

Zidoo. The Zidoo X9S/Z9S use the Realtek 1295/Realtek 1296 SoC's respectively and Android OS vs. the Sigma SoC's and Linux OS on the older Dune's. The X9S is using Android 6 OS and the Z9S with the newer Realtek 1296 is using Android 7 OS. The difference between the Realtek 1295/1296 is said to be additional I/O and memory support, otherwise on paper they are equal. Both units seem to work the same at the time of this posting with the Z9S maybe operating a smidge faster. That maybe the difference in OS/memory between the two. It's rumored that Zidoo will perhaps update the X9S to Android 7 OS in the future. But it's really a moot point as you would want to buy the newer Z9S. Both units use a very nice aluminum case and are well built. Zidoo supports Kodi and has it's own movie wall software called "Home Theater 2" which works very well. I do not use Kodi opting for playback via "Home Theater 2". The Zidoo Z9S seems to be handling HDR meta data correctly.

The Dune HD Pro 4K is also an Android 6 OS Realtek 1295 SoC player. Zidoo is both an OEM/ODM supplier/manufacture and builds the Dune HD Pro 4K for Dune. Dune is doing their own programming on the unit and is quite far behind the curve compared to Zidoo's X9S/Z9S feature for feature. I had a Dune HD Pro 4K and replaced it with the Zidoo X9S.

To answer your question, buy the Zidoo Z9S if you plan to use it for UHD 4K. I really don't see any difference between the Dune HD Solo 4K and the Zidoo units for HD/1080 playback and the X9S/Z9S do a great job for UHD playback. Zidoo has, IMHO, excellent customer support, a website with a user forum, and very frequent firmware updates keeping the units current.

Thank you so much! for the detailed comparison. I will undoubtedly choose the Z9S. I'm currently using "My Movies" but not tied to it and certainly don't mind switching to "Home Theater 2". I'm guessing the Z9S will scan all my movies on my UnRaid server and "Home Theater 2" will just work?

Sure.

I never got around to setting up "My Movies". I bought an HP MediaSmart Server, it's still in the box, but never had time to get it up and running due to work travel.

Setup is relatively easy for the Z9S. There is a setup wizard that takes care of most every thing.

"Home Theater 2" has a short learning curve. The Zidoo units do not come with much documentation. You'll learn a lot looking at YouTube videos. But, once you find the features, an edit on HT2 is really pretty simple. It does a pretty good job scraping and scrapes out of the box from IMDB. Any errors I've had come from file name vs. IMDB listing and are easy to correct. It's helpful to have a Bluetooth keyboard to connect to the unit for corrections, otherwise it's using the remote as an air mouse to work with an on screen keyboard to enter change data/naming.

Feature's are more or less the same as the older Dune units but with the Android OS and the differences in the remote layouts and lack of documentation you will do a lot of button pushing to get up to speed. If you use an Android cell phone you will be more familiar with the OS as they are the same. Some features/popups require a long button push where a remote key or on screen tile or button has been dual-purposed. The screen layouts are different than the Dune interface but are quite clean in design and I've come to prefer them.

I see you're in Brownstown, I'm near Brighton. I was just over your way last week at Riverside Kayak Connection in Wyandotte. Send me a PM if you get stuck or have questions.

Here's a video of Home Theater 2:

The screen layouts are different than the Dune interface but are quite clean in design and I've come to prefer them.

I see you're in Brownstown, I'm near Brighton. I was just over your way last week at Riverside Kayak Connection in Wyandotte. Send me a PM if you get stuck or have questions.
Thanks again!! I'm very familiar with Wyandotte, born and raised there.
I have a trip coming up and will order a Z9S after that. You had the information I needed and appreciate it!

Hi, I am still using the Smart D1 in my living room but with the last firmware update when I try to play an ISO file the player prompts a message asking me to update the application. The Dune is not connected to my network because I store all my files in the internal HDD.

I am on the latest stable firmware: http://files3.dune-hd.com/firmware/h...9_1353_r11.dff

Thanks in advance for your help.
