Directv and speech intelligibility

On some content--CBS and NBC filmed shows like police procedurals--my wife and I find some of the dialogue hard to make out. It sounds to my unpracticed ear like compression is involved but I wouldn't swear to it. I do know that when I've heard similar shows on televisions using other other carriers (over-the-air, Cox, etc.) I haven't noticed the same problem. My Pioneer SC-68 only offers a correction by increasing the signal to the center speaker which really doesn't work. I'm not sure whether I've diagnosed the problem correctly and if so, what's the antidote. I do believe one receiver (don't remember which) boosts the 1k-3k range, which may be a partial solution but I would think an expander--which, so far as I know isn't available--might be a better solution.

As you can tell from this meandering, I'm flummoxed. Any help would be appreciated.
