FireTV Cube and Plex

I've gotten interested in the FireTV Cube and it's currently selling for an attractive price. I would have it connected to an AVR and would be interested in how it performs as a Plex client, streaming media. I have no interest in 4K.

Can someone tell me:
When using the Cube's Plex client to stream BD rips from a Plex server:
- will the Cube Direct Stream the native video without the server transcoding?
- will it bitstream the DTS-HD and True-HD audio and pass-through HDMI to the AVR?

The bitterness of poor quality lasts long after the sweetness of the low price is forgotten . . . life is too short to drink bad wine

As I recall, the answers are yes. That said I have a cube and sometimes have issues with it determining whether or not it’s connected via HDMI. Basically, sometimes the TV will be off and the speaker on the cube does not work. I have a lot of other echo devices so it’s not really a big deal but it is kind of annoying. If I could go back I wouldn’t have purchased cube but hindsight is 20/20. To confirm the answer to your questions look here:

Unless something has changed recently, I don’t think the FireTV will bitstream HD audio. An Nvidia Shield will.

Thanks for the feedback so far.

The Cube's specs say it will pass 5.1 audio through HDMI. What exactly "5.1 audio" is, is up for debate. Then again, what it does with Plex is what I'm looking for.

I know the shield does it all, but -- the cube is currently selling for $80 (less than half the price of the Shield) which makes it an attractive impulse buy.
