If I remember correctly, I had to type in the SMB location in Kodi the very first time for it to show up. This is even after adding it in the Shield settings. For some reason, it wouldn't initially find it.

EDIT:
If you can't add the SMB folder to the network under the Shield settings, you may be running SMB 3. In which case, you need to join the beta program on the nvidia forums for SMB 3 support.

FYI, under the Shield settings, that's where it'll find the share, and ask for your username and password for said share.

What is the latest firmware for shield 4k pro? I have version 8.1.1. Is mine the latest software?

Im using Denon x4000 with my Nvidia shield 4k pro. While I'm watching IPTV movies and shows Denon gives me multi ch in. And plii cinema. while watching Netflix it gives me Dolby digital +. Which is better from all of them? Dolby digital + , multi ch in , or plii cinema?

thanks,this worked

I had to go to storage and add the server

everything popped up after that

Huh? Isn't the SMB3 beta only availible for 2015/2017 models?

Yep, the beta is for the 2015/2017 Shields not ours yet.

Both boxes say 19V---2.1A, so I thought I was good to go. I tried last night but, was unable to reproduce the shutdown. I have to pull the cabinet out in a couple days and will switch it out then.

Yeah I know they say they're the same I just remember some discussion back when it came out last October that nvidia recommended using the one that ships with the 2019 model. If you weren't having any issues I'd not even recommend trying it but given the problems you had is say it's worth trying.

The ONLY reason I have both is for passthrough audio on the Shield. I’m an Apple devotee and would drop the Shield in a heartbeat if they’d open that up. I highly doubt new hardware would finally be the catalyst to do that since it’s the software that’s preventing it.

I'm sorry if this has been mentioned before, but it appears the Shield Pro 2019 can do Youtube HDR to some extent via Kodi (19) and its Youtube addon. I'm guessing it is done in software, as 4k HDR runs quite horribly, but if i force it to max 1080p, it runs at least 24-30fps HDR content smoothly (And 1080p HDR is better thank no HDR at all )

And my other Android TV box which costs less than half of any Shields can do 4k HDR with Smart YouTube TV app without problem although the official app is still lacking HDR support.

Different SOC, those cheap Android boxes have plenty of disadvantages against the Shield.

Hey guys, hopefully a quick question..

I have started backing up all of my Blu-rays and 4K UHDs and plan on playing them with the nvidia shield 2019 pro I just got.

I have been using MakeMKV to create .MKVs of the blu-rays and 4K (main movie only).

I think I might want to just do full backups (menus, deleted scenes, special features, alternate cuts etc). I am thinking this because a lot of my movies have alternate endings, theatrical cut/extended cuts/unrated cuts, etc. So It may just be easier to backup the whole disc, instead of just the main movie.

What are my options for backups of the whole disc? I have ANYDVDHD which says it can create an .ISO or a backup folder, I have MakeMKV that has the backup function with decryption (.M2TS file).

What container or raw format is going to play the best on the nvidia shield off of my NAS? It is important that I use something like KODI or PLEX so that I can see the thumbnails of all of the movies and can organize everything into sub-categories.

I can continue to just do the main movie .MKV if that is going to play the best, but it is just becoming tedious since so many movies have alternate endings, different cuts of the movies, etc.

Please let me know and I hope that this isn't too complicated. Thanks!

For your purposes MKV might actually be best, but for more compatibility and save a lot of space (usually about 70-80%) I typically transcode all my Bluray rips to H.265 HEVC MP4 files via Handbrake.

I started down this path as well but I am having a heck of a time with movies that have some foreign (non-English) language subtitles. For instance a Marvel movie where a character is speaking in Russian and the English subtitles are on screen. Trying to get this correct with various media players has been a nightmare using make mkv. If anyone has a fool proof workflow please let me know.

These are questions better answered in the respective forums for the products being used to rip. The issue with subtitles in MKV is mostly a plex problem from what I've seen and can be solved converting them to an external sub with the same name as the mkv. Plex will pick that up. Kodi shouldn't care and just play the subs correctly, but, you're better off creating a separate forced sub track for those things and selecting that. The ripping aspect of this stuff, however, have better forums to get better answers.

When I use MakeMKV I rip all of the English Subs with each movie I do. This way I will have any subtitles that I need embedded into the file. From there if I watch on Plex, I just select what sub track that I need. The only ones I care about are the forced ones that you speak of and on those movies (like Avatar) I'll just select the sub track until I find out which one fits with the foreign specific segments. There is probably a much better way to do this but this is what I do so I don't have to fiddle with a lot of different stuff since I don't know what specific movies have "forced" subtitles.

Hey thanks for this, but the thread seems pretty old and I'm sure there are a ton of movies not included on the spreadsheet so I am going to personally stick to ripping all of the English sub tracks each time I use MakeMKV so I don't later miss any forced subs. Thanks though

Try using eac3to on the disc/rip, to find the playlist and sub track #'s, and then using tsMuxer to quickly demux the subs to check. Adds mere seconds to your remux and it finds forced subs every time.

Hey there, thanks for replying. Should I do this before using MakeMKV? I can then use this to decide if there is any forced subtitles and then I don't even need to include subtitles in the final .MKV if eac3to doesnt find any forced subtitles?

I wonder if I do find one with forced subs like Avatar if I can somehow make MakeMKV default to this sub track when playing the file with Kodi or Plex. Any ideas? Thanks!

The way I do it is to create an ISO first using ANy DVD HD. Then I use CLone BD or MakeMKV to create the MKV. I am using SSDs for this process only for speed. And then I move the ISO and MKV to their permanent locations on platter hard drives.

Thanks for your detailed reply. So instead of using anydvds rip to hard drive, you do the rip to ISO? This doesnt decrypt it though right? I'm assuming you do this so you can keep the ISO as a backup to the orginal disc? Then you use MakeMKV to rip just the movie (main title no special features) ? This way your ISO is a full backup non decrypted if you want special features, etc later?

Also, do you have backups of the ISO and .mkv too then?

Thanks!

AnyDVD can real time decrypt during ISO creation or it can create a protected ISO. For your process, creating a decrypted ISO is probably best.

Thanks!

Guys, The Shield will play these ISO's like the original disk? What's the difference in the end between a MakeMKV rip and an AnyDVd rip?

Depends on the player support. Plex won't. Kodi may (I've not looked in a while). VLC supposedly does (never tried).

From my understanding it won't with Kodi or Plex where they both have a nice interface system that shows your movies with thumbnails. I would just use my Oppo player and do ISOs but I want the "Netflix" like interface that Plex and Kodi provides.
