What don’t you care for about the new Shield in comparison to the ATV4Ks?

It seems oddly difficult to find a single streaming solution that does both video and audio as it should.

It’s extremely fast and rock solid but if it had the Apple TV app (aka iTunes) that might do it for me. I have several hundred movies half of which are 4K on that app and hundreds of TV shows that don’t port to Vudu or Movies Anywhere so that’s important. Maybe they’ll make a version for Android TV since they now have one for Android Fire TV.
Another benefit of Apple is all my devices sync to each other. Same apps, same home screen, etc. That’s a nice feature.

I'm not deep into the Apple ecosystem, so if it wasn't for your significant content / device accumulation I assume the Shield would be at least as preferable?

Not sure. The one area the new Shield is better is the AI upscaling of HD to 4K.

If you have a significant investment in content purchased from Apple the ATV4K is the best way to get that content on you display. Likewise if you're primarily an Apple user.

The idea that it's oddly difficult to solve this problem is the manifestation of the natural desire of the consumer. However the converse (fulfilling the specifics of that desire) is not part of the business model of the companies with the resources to be major providers. Nvidia is selling Shields to the local content consumer and beyond that all they need is Netflix. That model works for a niche player but it doesn't for a major player like Apple for various reasons. Apple is selling to the Apple customer that wants an Apple device that also covers the major plays (if slowly). If they make a few sales at the expense of Nvidia and the horde of media players because of Infuse that's nice but inconsequential. If they lose some ATV sales because of Samsung displays running the AppleTV app that's also inconsequential.

Personally rather than chase that chimera I own multiple devices (but never again a Roku).

I might type 2K for 1080p.

So here's a profound Shield annoyance. If I go into the audio menu and turn off auto and then select all the choices it doesn't work. Of course the goal wasn't to just enable all the sources but that was the next to the last thing I tried because I couldn't believe it wasn't working*. The last thing I tried was turning auto back on which made audio work correctly again but without achieving my goal.

*meaning it wasn't doing what I wanted, restricting codecs to ones I ticked.

You could build a small form factor PC with a 350 dollar sound card and use bluestacks. You lose Dolby Vision in apps I'm sure but hey it's a give and take game for enthusiasts.

Started using the Refresh Rate App. Seems to work except when the video is first started. Shows 2300 then switches it 23.976 followed by an error message complaining about the HDCP. Restarting the video it seems to work fine.

Any way to avoid that initial error message???

I have a gen8 Intel NUC that comes with a 3.5mm audio jack on the front. Kind of expensive to build another NUC for the kitchen ($300-400). My old 1080p media players (Asus O!Play, WDTV) were less than $100 and small form factor and they had an analog out. I suppose it is too much to ask for a simple 3.5mm audio jack on the Shield. I want to use a Shield in the kitchen plugged into my PC monitor (via HDMI), which has poor built-in speakers. If the Shield had an analog out, I have multiple portable speakers I could set next to the monitor and get some decent sound.

They don't have to put a simple 3.5mm audio jack on their Shield, and I don't have to buy their product.

I do have a BenQ treVolo wireless bluetooth portable Electrostatic speaker that the Shield can wirelessly beam audio to, but it is typically used in another application, used in conjunction with a different monitor in another room. I guess the easiest solution would be to buy another bluetooth capable speaker to use with the Shield. I have other small portable speakers that have analog inputs and no bluetooth that unfortunately will not work with the Shield.

You can pick up a bluetooth receiver from TP-Link at Amazon for less than $15 and connect the shield via bluetooth to any pair of speakers.

I just read in the NVidia forum that there is a 3rd Hotfix that addresses the color space switching issue with Sony TV’s.
One post said the Shield is now correctly switching color space for SDR, HDR10 and (the fix) Dolby Vision.

I am out of town at the moment. Will try later today.

Now, if they can add automatic frame rate switching - Nirvana ;-)

QQ: Once you opt-in for a hotfix, can you eventually go back to the non-hotfix build once the official build is out with those fixes in it?

From my understanding the way I read it, you will get both official and hotfix releases going forward with no way to opt out. Someone will correct me if I got this wrong I'm sure.

I am 99% that you are committed to the hotfix process until the next Official release. Then you have to opt-in again if you want.

Really??? Oh damnit! If I had known that I'd have grabbed the hotfix already. SMH. I guess I completely misread that then. I thought you'd get all future hotfixes going forward.

Dont check the box to have updates automatically installed and you can choose to ignore any hot fixes and just install the updates (hotfix or official) you want and only when you want to.

Thanks! You know, that may just do the trick. I wasn't aware of this. Another device to plug in and deal with, but it is an inexpensive solution. The $35 Mi box has a 3.5mm audio jack. I only wish the $135 shield came with one.

True, but that uses up one of the USB ports. Most of my use consists of playing high-bitrate files from local storage (HDD or flash drive), often with external subtitles, so I value having two USB ports free to plug in two HDD's.

Anyone have issues with Plex app connecting to a Plex Media Server lately? I consistently need to restart the Shield to get it to reconnect. However, any other device on the network works fine connected to the same media server.

I have four 10TB drives connected to this and I’m playing 90-130 Mbps 4K/HDR files through it no problem. That leaves one free on the Shield and room to grow on the hub. Works great!

I just learned that the big unwieldy Shield gaming remote comes with an analog 3.5mm audio jack. Another workaround. I don't play games, so I never paid it much attention before.

What's an analog output?

Personally I wish they sold all devices with an option for only digital outputs and lowered the price. Since I started weaning myself of analog connections in 2005. When I started using HDMi devices.

Even 25 years ago I was using optical connections with the devices that had them. But now I wouldn't even use an optical connection.
