I have to use something to playback local files and Plex used to work well for me. It's only recently it's started freezing on various files for no apparent reason.

What do you use to playback local files?

thanks for the reply, covers most of my needs.

Anyone here using LG OLEDs clarify me regarding frame rate option? Enabling real cinema on my Lg C8 removes judder ,this includes 24p via 60p as per rtings.com. So what difference this frame rate app or the built in frame rate beta gonna do ? My guess there wont be much difference ?

How did you enable Atmos on Amazon? All I see is 5.1

Only Exclusive content such as Jack Ryan, The Aeronauts, and a few others will have Dolby Atmos. Also, take note that you must look for the UHD version of the video. The standand version will not have Atmos.

So if I don’t have a UHD display I won’t be able to get Atmos?

Oh my. Entire religions have spun up around that question. In short, matching the refresh rate to the original film format alleviates the need for the TV to insert or repeat frames to match it's current refresh rate. IE: 60Hz doesn't divide nicely by 23.96Hz. Most Home Theater Enthusiasts hate the builtin video processing done by TVs to address this problem, so much so, the Movie Industry has lobbied against it for a new standard viewing mode: https://www.displaydaily.com/article...r-home-viewing

Many folks (including myself) can't stand the "Soap Opera" effect that Real Cinema puts onto the video. How bothered you are by refresh-rate mismatch without it is up to you.

There is a potential work-around. I use the HD Fury AVR Key (recently renamed 4K Ultra AVR Key?) It will lie to the NVidia device and say you have an UHD display, and then send a 1080p ATMOS stream out the back end. I have no idea what the video will end up looking like, since I just use this to split the audio stream off to the receiver since the ARC version of my older LG won't handle ATMOS. You may need to go with the Diva to get a nice HDR to 1080p video conversion, but it should be able to send the ATMOS stream through as well:

yeah, being a tech enthusiast i wish film maker modes comes as a standard for all the Tv's, even the older Tvs should get it if technically possible.

I too cannot stand the soap opera effect , the one i hate the most, but isnt that one caused by the true motion turned on rather than "real cinema"?

Was able to track that down and it worked, but I hadn't seen banding that bad since the Game of Thrones Long Night episode. I'm assuming they were using crappy compression (or I had a bad connection). The Amazon HDR content is typically amazing.

The only way you get the Soap Opera effect is to turn on Motion interpolation. If you turn off Motion INterpolation, there is no soap Opera effect.

AFAIK, at this point there is a known issue that attempting to change frame rate while switching to DV causes the Shield to crash/reboot. On any application.

I believe NVidia does not attempt this combination with the beta frame rate function.
Plex also knows this and will not frame rate switch when playing a DV file.
MrMC is also aware of this, but has (at this point) decided to let NVidia fix it - I.e. they are not going to put in the “hack” Plex and NVidia has done.

For now, one potential work around is to set the Shield default frame rate to 23.9 rather than 59/60.
This should work in the majority of cases since the majority of DV content is 23.9 - so no switching needed ;-)

Not sure if/how Mateusz Refresh Rate tool does this. I do not use it right now.
Made another test with Netflix and HDR (TV does not support Dolby Vision) and the official frame rate switch works. TV switches to 24hz (23.976) and HDR (eg. Lost in Space).

What do you use to playback local files?
My biggest complaint with Plex is that it won't auto playback movies, only TV episodes. The wife likes to fall asleep with it continuously playing. I have a couple dozen PLS playlists build for her and I, and I need them to play continuously. I use either Kodi or MrMC when I'm using the Shield for playback. She prefers using the older Sony BD player, as lossless audio isn't important for her for going to sleep. But my Roku players will do auto-play as well using the Roku Media Player app. But using Plex on any platform just won't do it. And of course Plex doesn't support PLS playlists either.

Thanks for checking, this agrees with what I see as well in a number of apps.
HDR+Frame rate switch work fine.
DV+Frame rate switch will crash the Shield. It’s one or the other at this point.

I did read on the NVidia forum that they have a new firmware release candidate into Google for review. [email protected] did mention additional fixes over and above the latest hot fixes.
I did ask him about the DV+Frame rate issue. Crossing my fingers ;-)

That's where Plex works OK for me, when I sit down to watch a film I prefer to see it rather than not see it.

Anybody have any tips/tricks on how to get it to *wake up* when you use a Logitech Harmony (650) activity in combination with a FLIRC? I've got my FLIRC programmed pretty much exactly as I want it, except that she's not waking up when I first start the activity, and I have to wait a few seconds as the TV and AVR power on and/or flip inputs, and then seperately strike a button (like left or right) to get the shield to wake up.

Small/minor inconvenience. First world problems. But I live in the 1st World, sooo....

Why not use the ARC function to wake it up?

Small/minor inconvenience. First world problems. But I live in the 1st World, sooo....

Mines been doing that lately as well with a harmony hub. I have to hit ok and the green light will turn on.

I'm guessing you meant "CEC" when you said "ARC"? I gave it a try... it *seems* to be (sort of) working. Still a small delay, but better.

In general I try to avoid CEC. It's (mostly) nice on "simple" setups (TV+Shield; TV+Shield+soundbar; etc), but in my experiences if you have a A/V Receiver in between the Shield and the TV, and multiple devices hooked up to that receiver, CEC usually goes sideways at some point, and often causes more problems than it fixes...

But for now? I'll take it. Thanks for the rec.

Yep, meant CEC. I too normally don't use it (keep my display on 'ARC Only'), but do like that on the new Shield you can pick what parts of CEC you want.

I have my Shield set for Wake and Volume control. That's mainly in case I'm charging my Harmony remote, and want to use the stock remote in the meantime.

I have CEC turned on my display but completely off on my Shield but can still turn it on and control it with my stock Sony remote.

When playing a 4K HDR on my 1080p SDR JVC projector, the colors look washed out. Is there a way to fix this on the Shield?
