HBO Max Extends Run Of ‘Justice League’, ‘Wonder Woman’ And More; Adds ‘Watchmen’, ‘Superman’ Movies
By Dino-Ray Ramos
June 23, 2020 5:15pm

Just when you thought your favorite DC Comics movies were departing HBO Max this month, the new streaming platform turns around and extends their stay a little longer.

Starting July and continuing through December, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Justice League, Wonder Woman Suicide Squad, Superman: The Movie, Superman II, Superman III, Superman IV, Superman Unbound and the Watchmen movie will be available for your streaming pleasure.

Earlier this month, HBO Max said that Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Justice League, Suicide Squad and Wonder Woman would be departing the platform on July 1. But due to popular demand, the titles will remain on the streamer alongside the newly announced titles which include the movies from the Superman franchise as well as Zack Snyder’s feature adaptation of Watchmen. However, Batman, Batman Returns, Batman Forever, Batman & Robin, Catwoman, Jonah Hex and The Losers will still be leaving on July 1. HBO Max will rotate DC films on their lineup every month.

For current DC Universe subscribers, they're doing a 6 month combo price of $13 for both: https://www.dcuniverse.com/hbomax

That is the first sensible thing I have seen out of this HBO Max launch until your read the details and then realize, NOPE this is still AT&T. They will take a decent cross promotional idea and immediately run it in the ditch.
  • DC Universe subscriber on a free trial. NO DEAL.
  • Existing HBO Max subscriber that would entertain a DC Universe subscription. NO DEAL.

I wonder just how many subscribers this might be available to?

Interesting that the 'deal pricing' is pretty close to a monthly HBO Max fee. Is this more of an exercise in getting DC Universe customers accustomed to a higher tiered pricing structure as they phase out DC Universe streaming and move the content onto HBO Max?

  • Only existing DC Universe subscribers on an ANNUAL subscription plan are eligible through the remainder of that annual subscription or 6 months, whichever is less.

It works for DCU monthly subscribers too. That's what I am and it says I'm eligible.

That seems more reasonable. The link to the original article posted has changed. That article said it was only for annual subscribers.

The accuracy of these articles is shoddy or unclear at best. I read both of the articles linked below and thought it was only for annual subscribers and not monthly subscribers. I guess in the race to post something 'first', accuracy can take a back seat.

DCU's days are numbered.

That said, DCU offers 4k and HDR (albeit very low bitrate). Stargirl looks very good in HDR.

I don't want to begrudge any DCU subscribers, but if moving all DC video content over to HBO Max accelerates their support of 4K HDR, I wouldn't be disappointed.

Has anyone seen any companion podcast access inside of HBO Max yet? The article seems to indicate that SEARCH PARTY is one of the first to get a companion podcast and that it would be available to stream from within the HBO Max service. I have looked and don't see anything in the EXTRAS section of individual episodes. Checked via HBO Max on Web Browser, HBO Max on Android and HBO Max on Android TV.

Yeah, I just noticed this podcast last night after I watched the first episode. I had recalled that podcasts were supposed to be included inside the HBO Max app but weren't there at launch. So looks like they're already adding some additional features. Good to see. (Now do 4K HDR, please!)

While I hope Max would add HDR soon, I wouldn't get your hopes up. When Doom Patrol premiered last week, DC sent out an email saying, "Exclusively in 4K HDR on DC Universe."

Don't worry. This is AT&T. My hopes are not elevated even one bit.

Hmm. Not a good sign. Based on all the rumors leaking out about HBO Max last year, it looked like AT&T was going to put more into the service, even if it meant cannibalizing other outlets (e.g. TBS, TNT, Cinemax, DC Universe, etc.).

But it now looks like they're still trying to protect all those other outlets too. Bad move, IMO. They need to grow a pair and follow in the footsteps of Disney, which is going all-in on Hulu. Look at how Hulu cannibalizes all the non-sports content from ABC, FX, FXX, Freeform. It's pretty much all available to stream within hours of airing. Meanwhile, HBO Max shows Full Frontal (a TBS weekly talk/comedy show) in their ads but doesn't include the most recent seasons. If you want to hear jokes about politics from three years ago, they've got you covered. Want this week's fresh episode? Sorry, you'll need a cable TV bundle with TBS for that.

UHD and/or HDR are probably not in the near offing, but here's a bit of positive news: Today, for the first time, HBO Max on my Nvidia Shield TV delivered DD+ audio!

Did they fix it? They had it a couple of weeks ago for a few days. I posted about it on the Reddit HBO Max forum where there are some reps. It's not just on The Shield, the sound problems are across all platforms so it's something on their end.

Edit- Spoke too soon. Still DD standard, so they're still having a problem.

Did WarnerMedia and AT&T Just Kill DC Universe for the Sake of HBO Max?
https://boundingintocomics.com/2020/...ke-of-hbo-max/

This does feel like a way to slowly and gently push DCU subscribers into a HBO Max subscription before eventually shutting it down.

I don't see any reason to shut down DCU. It may happen, I'm just saying I don't think it's necessary from a business standpoint.

What would make sense to me is for DCU to continue on as-is but for all its original series -- not just Doom Patrol but also Titans, Harley Quinn, Stargirl, etc. -- to debut at the same time on HBO Max. And then give folks who opt to subscribe to both HBO Max and DCU a permanent bundling discount, maybe $3 off the total.

DCU offers a lot of stuff for DC geeks beyond their new original series. A whole library of digitized comic books from over the years, plus a library of older cartoons, movies and shows featuring DC characters, most of which aren't on HBO Max at any given time. So there would still be reasons for super-fans to subscribe to DCU in addition to (or rather than) HBO Max.

But it doesn't make any sense to me that WarnerMedia is pouring money into any new quality content that they own but aren't putting it on HBO Max. It doesn't have to all be *exclusive* to HBO Max but it all needs to be on HBO Max if they really see this service as their future.

I've thought for the last year or so that DCU will eventually be comics only and the shows will be rolled into HBO Max.

Yeah, they might do that, and cut the price of DCU. Then roll all of its video content over into HBO Max.

Or they could keep it as-is and just have it share its new line-up of original shows with HBO Max, and also let bits of the DCU catalog of older movies and shows float in and out of HBO Max, sort of how they do with Crunchyroll, their anime service.

Yes, just checked, still DD. Being that all my other apps are fine I’m not even going to bother trying to fix this issue anymore.
