Limitations of USB Streaming?

This was the most relevant place that I could find to ask this. I have a brand new Samsung Q7DR and I am finding some 1080p content (not even 4k content) via USB is unwatchable (buffering every few seconds or playback will suddenly fail halfway through a video). I wanted to find out if there is a general rule of thumb as far as limitations of watching content via USB and if there is a certain point I need to consider switching to another method like local network streaming, or if the issue is more likely that my USB drive is simply too slow. Admittedly right now I am using a cheap SanDisk Cruzer USB 2.0 drive. I know the write speed is pretty bad, but I did not think the read speed was so bad. Also, do TVs even have USB 3.0 yet these days?
