NV shield app for Atmos.

Hey I was wondering can someone point me to a simple to the point app that will play True HD. I have installed 6 apps tonight and none of them would play True HD. MX player did, for all of 10 mins, I paused the video the receiver said Atmos, and then went to unpause, and poof no more atmos.... Then the interface changed from had been grey to white, then before moving on to Archos it was Grey Again......

I got Archos to work sort of, except the audio cuts out for a second every 5 or 10 minutes... This is a nightmare, of utter needlessness. I tried Kodi, SBMC, MRMC, VLC Player, MX player, and Archos. I also dont want to have to deal with most of those apps. I just want a stinking Local Media (from a HDD) player that will bitstream to my AVR. Which none of these apps seem to want to do at all, or correctly. This should not be the this difficult.

We sold our Xbox One, and planned to used the shield to play Rips. This isnt working out....

No 2017.

An update but still a failure . I seen it suggested to just use the native player, done and that works! Except when using the native player the video freezes every 30 secs for like 5 secs. Even on a small file (8.9gbs) the External Drive is a NVME Drive in a USB 3.1 External enclosure, so that should not be a bottleneck, and the movie plays fine in the other players, and played fine in MX till it messed up (tried that again this morning and now that app stays in a phone style, thats a buggy piece of lol.)

UPDATE: I guess I didnt try VLC, I thought I did first as I use that on PC and love it, I read it would work, and thought I tried . Guess not, because tried now, and IT WORKS. Atmos on the receiver, Bit streaming Fine, No Freezes, no Sound cut outs, all is fine. I really dont understand why all these apps, make this so difficult.

Kodi works just fine, you just need to set up passthrough and whitelist what your AVR accepts.

I have the Sheild 2019Pro, Kodi with passthrough enabled and receiver compatible audio formats chosen in Expert mode plays 'everything'. Including files that crash plex & MRMC.

Ya idk, something is up with mine. I tried Kodi, SBMC (or whatever it's called) MRMC, all set to passthrough and they never did. They would not passthrough any audio at all, I tried all the tracks on 4 different movies. The TrueHD track, the DD+ track, the DTS track. No matter what all those Apps would decode.

I did read something about Frame Pacing causing Bitstreaming to not work and to turn it off, but I couldn't find the option to do so in any of them.

VLC was the best option anyway. Usually if I am watching too, I will just use my PC to play the content or stream it from my NAS. Only when it's just the wife/kids watching do they use the shield, and sometimes me when I can't be bothered to use my PC.

They don't want to deal with all those Apps, they overcomplicate the simple task of playing a movie off the Ext HDD.

It's fairly simple.

Set Kodi/MrMC to Expert

In the Audio Menu

Enable Passthrough
Enable all audio formats that are supported by your AVR such as Dolby Digital Plus, TrueHD, DTSMA

Make sure that "Sync Playback to display" is disabled or you will not be able to passthrough any Lossless Audio.

If you're using Plex, just go to the settings and enable "Passthrough".

Oppo UDP-203 - Nvidia Shield
XBox One X

Setting pass through is not enough in Kodi , you have to choose expert mode in settings menu & a further menu comes up with available formats, enable all formats your receiver supports .

I own a 2019, a 2017, and multiple 2015 shields. I can confirm that they will all properly bitstream lossless DTS-HD-MA and Dolby TrueHD via Plex, Kodi, and SPMC, for both 1:1 1080p Blu Ray MKV rips, and 1:1 4K UHD Blu Ray MKV Rips.

Plex is pretty plug-n-play simple, far less customizable, but requires a "server-side-device" to be running (although the Shield is capable of being both server and client, if you want). Kodi and SPMC take a bit more elbow grease/wading through menus/configuring to get up and running, but tend to be far more customizable if you choose to...

Just for the record, Atmos and TrueHD are two different things.
When we talk about the lossless audio, we talk about the TrueHD, not Atmos.

Back to the OP question.
I have the 2017 version, the following three are working properly. I have tested
+ Kodi
+ VLC
+ Plex
Note: you must enable Passthrough first.

Atmos (Lossless Variation) along with DTS-X is what you'll find on Blu Ray's and UHD Discs. These two formats will be part of Dolby TrueHD or DTSMA.

The Atmos coming from Netflix, and Amazon Vudu is "Lossy" and is part of Dolby Digital Plus.

Don’t use sync playback to display. In video settings under “whitelist” add all the resolution/refresh rates you want to use and Kodi will select the appropriate ones for your content automatically.

XBOX Live: Wagmman
PSN: Wagg
BFBC2: Wagman
Steam: Wag

My Second Life character looks and acts exactly like me except he can fly.
