I watched The Revanent in 4k Blu ray at brother in law's over the weekend on his new Samsung KS8500 and it looked incredible! I think that might be part of why my first impression of the eg9100 settings were too dark. That KS8500 gets SEARINGLY bright and really popped.

I'm assuming the TV doesn't handle it well?

Yeah I can see that, but I think after you spend sometime with the 9100 you will appreciate it's strengths. The depth of picture you get with an OLED just can't be duplicated. Go back after a couple of weeks and see if the 8500 picture doesn't appear flat. I had a flagship 4k HDR Samsung last year great set but can't touch any oled contrast wise imo

Not really fair to compare a 2016 HDR LCD (watching a HDR movie) to a 2015 OLED. Watch a dark movie in a darkened room and tell us which you prefer. I already know your answer.

Skyfall's fight scene at night in the Shanghai skyscraper was the first thing to wow me with an OLED. There's a lot of contrast. John Wick has a dark club scene and the overall movie is dark to show off the infinite contrast.

Basically anything in recent years will look great.

Are you certain that it's not in the source? I don't believe I've seen true banding on my set, on 10 months ownership. I have seen encoders give up on near blacks leading to the blacks "breaking up", especially on lower bitrates.

Yes Blu-ray sources the trouble scenes in Interstellar and other movies have been well documented. For me it's a non-issue but it bothers some folks.

I am familiar with the near black compression artifacts but this is different. Also vignetting shows itself but it's rare.

I can't speak from experience about it at all (or the quality of the movie itself, AV aside), but I've read Lucy is a wonderful copy since its a 4k master to 4k with little fiddling and is a jaw dropper,

Even the 1080p blu ray is supposed to be a good one

If Luc Besson's other films are any indication AV wise even for being quite old (Leon and Fifth Element 4k->1080p) I'll bet the 4k->4k is incredible.

As soon as there is a blu ray app update on One S, I think I'll be all over it,

..In general I'd agree though, lots of 4k UHD discs seems like studios are still learning how to really utilize the format properly, or they have av engineers that are more set on pop (to the same tune of people being drawn to vivid/torch mode like flies on lights at retailers) than quality, at the expense of muddying things and making them worse .. just like how audio engineers are obsessed with clipping albums and making them unnecessarily loud, even beyond the style the artist is going for

This is probably a noobish question but will Blu ray give u the best quality picture? Say, Mad Max Fury Road on Blu ray compared to streaming from HBO Go. Would I see a big difference?

I am watching content on amazon prime that claims to be "3d". It is slightly blurry without the glasses but almost no difference with the glasses.

Do I need to push the 3d button when viewing native 3d content? I thought it was only to see 2d content in "3d".

yes push the button you should see an on screen message that indicates the tv is in 3d mode, depends on the source content sometimes 3d is more subtle but you should definitely notice the 3d effect.

Though streaming services are catching up you'll still have a higher bit rate with Blu ray disks. Also, you don't have to worry about bottle neck bandwidth issues from your IP. And, you'll have better audio options with Blu ray disks. But having saying that high quality streaming usually looks excellent.

My rule of thumb is to buy a Blu ray disk if I want to own a movie and to stream for a movie I want to rent. Since I have a VUDU account I can usually add the UV code at no charge and have the Movie also available for streaming. This is convenient since my EG9100 is not connected to a BD player.

Pretty sure HBO Go uses compression on their streams. Picture quality will not be as good as blu Ray disc.

Untouched blu Ray streams will output at around 26-30 Mbps depending on movie.

Couple days into owning this TV and still checking out various content. Watched a few YouTube 4k videos today and they looked unbelievable. One was the Costa Rica 4k and the other was Biosphere 4K. Im hard pressed to believe a 4k TV could look much better then what I saw from this 1080p TV while displaying the same content.

Just got this TV from the amazon sale. I'm having an issue where the tv locks up my cable box and won't show any picture. I have comcast and have tried 3 different types of x1 boxes. It'll get a picture once the box starts to load then goes blank. Didn't have this issue with my Panasonic st60 with any box. Could it be a handshake issue or something else?

Also if I turn my receiver on I get audio from the cable vox, but as soon as I turn the tv on all 3 boxes lose audio and reset.

I could see a handshake issue causing loss of video but how could a TV cause a cable box to lockup or reset ? you have 3 cable box's? confused.

When did LG stop production of this set, or have they?

Got this from the same Amazon sale and ended up with an even earlier one (509) that arrived in a beat up box. Not sure if I'll be keeping it as such. Seems like they were just clearing out the back of the warehouse.

I'm still on the fence between this model and the Samsung UN65KS8000. How far away from the screen are you sitting? Are you seeing the screen door effect if you are close? And because it has got a almost non-existing bezel, does it "appear" smaller than a regular 55" screen?

The one thing I'm seeing on video reviews of OLED in general -- having never had one previously -- is though the contrast is unbelievable, the insane black levels obscure details in really dark scenes. Does this happen? I'm guessing HDR on the newer OLED models somewhat would rectify this? Again, I'm guessing based on what I have read, having not owned an OLED, and not seeing this model in stores.

THANKS!!!

[quote=chunon;46540305]I could see a handshake issue causing loss of video but how could a TV cause a cable box to lockup or reset ? you have 3 cable box's?

Figured out its my receiver causing the issue with the new TV and cable box. Don't know what would be different between tvs but I guess that's how it goes.
