Hello there,

I've been looking to get a flat OLED TV, and the 55" version of this caught my eye. The thing is, I wasn't really planning on getting into the 4K game quite yet, but since the 1080p version of this TV is curved, this seems like the better option. I haven't seen any opinions though on how this TV handles upscaling HD, and (somewhat more importantly to me) SD content. I have a ton of DVD's that probably aren't getting Blu-rays anytime soon, so I'm wondering if I'm just going to end up making them look worse. I haven't seen any opinions in reviews of this TV, so I'm hoping if anyone has it, can give me their opinion on SD content on it?

Thanks!

Works just fine with my Denon 2200X, check your PCM / DTS settings / Digital etc.

I don't have a Genie, so it may be it only works with a genie. I know you need a Genie to get the 4K Channels. I'll be calling later today to upgrade anyways.

I don't see it on my 9500 in the LG store. It was there on my 9300 though, which I don't need it on, but I did test it.

You have to set up a new client on your genie, then go into the app on the TV and sync them. You may have to call DirecTV to activate it.

I hope it becomes available soon on my 9500 as I want to see what 4k is offered.

How about sharing some setup pics?

I finally got things set up the way I want with all my sources, and also modified my audio setup a bit. Previously I had a pair of KEF R500 in the TV room, with an old center speaker from the KEF 3005SE HTIB. I swapped the R500 upstairs for the LS50's in my listening room. Also added a REL T5 sub that I wasn't using to the setup for a 2.1 TV setup. I'm considering whether to buy another LS50 for center channel duties, but if I did that I would also want to buy a new TV stand.

My AVR is a Marantz nr1605

And my main source is my 4k 60hz HTPC which I recently built and documented over in the HTPC forum.

What are your guy's setups like?

Looks awesome, nice gear & speakers. What kind of HTPC case is that? Goes well with the speakers. I will post my new setup in the Eg9600 thread once I get it all set up.

Thanks man! It's a Streacom FC10 ( http://www.streacom.com/products/fc1...nless-chassis/ ), its made entirely of aluminum and is designed as a fanless case.

I detailed my build over in the HTPC forum here if you are curious - https://www.avsforum.com/forum/26-hom...l#post37503906

Ultimately I had to drill some holes in the case and add a fan as the nvidia gtx950 videocard I am using (needed for hdmi 2.0) was overheating.

There's a total price breakdown in the thread I linked in my previous post. Ultimately the streacom zf240 power supply did not work out and I ended up with a Silverstone SFX power supply instead from Frys (around $60). I also didn't require one of the usb3.0 cables I purchased ($10), so you can take around $110 off the build cost in my thread for a total of around $1000, which gets you 4k @ 60hz

What 4K sources does your HTPC provide? 4K streams?

Are people intending to get UHD Blu Ray or mostly content to start with 4K streams (Netflix, Amazon)?

Or just upscaling broadcast TV and Blu Ray/DVD?

Right now there is no 4k content on PC besides gaming (edit: and youtube). The main reason I got rid of my old i3 NUC htpc was because I wanted 4k @ 60hz, for both gaming and interface smoothness. If [email protected] doesnt bother you (hdmi 1.4) then something like an i3 nuc is a much much more reasonable proposition.

Both netflix and amazon have not yet enabled 4k streaming on PC devices yet. I expect that once hdmi 2.0 and hdcp2.2 are more common on PC's (right now only nvidia 900 series gpu support both) then these services will be enabled.

I got the version of the case I got with an optical drive slot, however there is no drive currently in there, I'm going to try and hold out for 4k bluray drives to become available.

In the meantime I did upgrade my netflix account and also have amazon prime, so my 4k sources are primarily from apps on the TV itself.

Upscaling bluray and live tv to 4k looks good, but I cannot say for certain that it looks better (other than the obvious benefits of having OLED) than my old 1080p display.

Ya, BB is the only place in town that has any at this point that I see, looks like that may be the same for a little while. Pricing is a funny thing too on this release, when is the last time there was a new product release and price drops in the same week....Never seen it before. Not to mention looks like price drops to come.......

I remember back in the day, I paid under $2500 for a brand new 34XBR960 when it just came out, with a $350 stand included, which I still have.

That was one of the most anticipated HDTVs at the time.

I posted here about what a great deal I was able to get at Circuit City.

You get Elite Status the second you buy the tv. I bought a Sony 940C, and the receipt said I now had Elite member status and had 45 days to return or exchange. 42 days later I went to BB to exchange for the 9500. No problem whatsoever. So yes, if you purchase the 65EF9500, you become an Elite member right away. My previous purchase was 2 years earlier, and according to their web site, to remain Elite Status, you have to spend $1500 a year. That was not the case for me, yet immediately upon purchase, the receipt showed 45 day return. It is true, your don't get the Elite Plus member points for the purchase for 15 to 20 days, which was the case for me.

Honestly, it's really not. From what I read, the EG9600 was a colossal flop. LG missed their sales target by a few dozen miles. I would think that if the EF9500's did as bad, that would be the end for OLED and LG would close up shop. Was it that Americans don't want curved TVs, no matter how good the pic? Yeah. Was it also that people aren't willing to pay $100+ an inch? Hell Yeah.

LG wants OLED to succeed, and its obviously the better technology.

But you gotta be realistic. If mainstream 55" is $1000 - $1500, who is going to pay $3000? Besides AVS members? .

Well, Chris has dropped his price a bit today . NICE! I'm thinking by Black Friday people are going to be giving this thing away .

I don't know that I would risk by from Adorama personally, based on their rep. But Chris has a great rep and now he is beating anything BB can do cuz of sales tax.

Yes. According to my Marantz NR1606 AV Receiver Sky HD uses 4:4:4 when connected and the picture from my PS4 is quite stunning.
