I'm surprised there are so many edge lit LG LCDs on the list, and no Vizio P or M Series.

The list is based on the Rtings ratings, especially for peak brightness and viewing angle. The Vizio P and M have plenty of brightness, but they are poorly rated for viewing angle. Also, they don't have great upscaling. Because of these points, I did not include them in my list. In addition, I mention the problems with edgelighting in each of the blurbs about the edgelit sets. Remember, the main point of this list is "best TVs for a Super Bowl party," for which I gave viewing angle and brightness top priority.

Joe Sixpack's will go to Wally World or Costco's and grab the largest screens for the least $$ regardless of tech for the big game...

So by pricing and screen real estate the Vizio's and Hisense will probably sell the most TV's during Super Bowl week.

I use new TV tweeks to vastly improve viewing pleasure...

Wazoo HDMI cables? Power conditioners? Ultra-expensive surround sound with more subs than people?

No... here is the secret!

Crown Royal, coke, ice and tall glasses... the more you drink the better the TV looks AND sounds!

Get them there an hour early by providing tasty eats, a few cocktails later your presentation is rightous!

Besides, once the red head starts dancing on the table--the game is forgotten.

Have a good party AVS!

Has anyone actually done a survey, as to how many sets get returned after the game? (Lots of open box specials after the game as well I imagine?)
And, of the returned, what Brands and Models, plus what % of those sold, get returned.

I'll wait for the 2018 superbowel to pick up a new TV. All these are 2016 Models. Save some $$$$ and go to a sports bar/friends house.
You'll have a better time for ~$40 than with today's 2016 displays will give you.

I probably shouldn't admit this on this type of forum. And while I am not Joey Sixpack nor have I ever heard of a store called Wally World, I was recently in a somewhat small audio-video store which had a rather diverse mix of sets on display, all playing the same movie.

One was the 85" LG, another the 75" Sony Z series, another the 77" LG OLED, and an 8500 series Samsung.

Now, I'm not exactly Tonto, nor Taka, and I can't throw a hatchet and split an apple at 25' feet. But nor am I Mr. Magoo or Stevie Wonder.

And yes, when OLED first came out I drooled over the blacks. I shuddered at the then ridiculous price however.

But try as I might, I scanned both walls of this shop, looked and looked and looked, and I could barely, if at all, tell the difference between the four to six sets on the wall.

I dare say, less than excellent reviews have scared me away from almost any set other than the top line Sony (though too small in only 75) Samsung and the OLED. If it were not for the reviews and even the statements here about the blacks not being great on some, I'd probably be happy with any of them, especially any 85" because that is the size I want.

However, because of price of an 85", when my current addition/media room is complete, I'll probably go with a projector and screen instead and save a few thousand dollars and have 120"

No. 5 (for an LCD) is not exactly at the top of the list.

The same trepidation can be used at every "Superbowel" (good name for it!). Unfortunately, we all have limited lifespans, so eventually you have to either @#%^ or get off the pot, to put it crudely.

Wally World is just a "clever," endearing name for Walmart.

How was the lighting in the store? Store comparisons are wrought with pitfalls. Once you go black, it is hard to go back.

I'll stick with my 73" Mitsubishi DLP set. Fantastic viewing angles as well as brightness.

And will be using my antenna for the best possible picture.

The pic is of my old DLP set. The new(er) one is twice as nice of picture (the one in my sig)

I get the importance of viewing angle for a Super Bowl party but I am not sure why you consider brightness top priority. It is not as if you can not see or enjoy the game just as much on a less bright screen nor is it necessary to have an overly bright room, people can see each other just fine, after all thousands watch Super Bowl in dark bars and lounges all over this country.

Considering that the brightness on LED displays are usually jacked-up all the way and you could not tell the difference I guess the OLED held its' own even in brightness.

^^^ yes, that is our issue(s). However, I have a great 50 NEC plasma, Great PQ, no motion bur> good blacks in a dark room>great viewing angle> even in a bright window room PQ is good but is not the best for a big party in the afternoon... I just don't want to give up a good PQ just for a bigger newer TV. So I want to get my $$$$ worth for the new Display. That a a little future proof.

I guess that is why they have been rolling over to my place for the past 25 years--I thought it was for the Crown!

You are correct, for the most part people will watch a Super Bowl on any TV be it tube, LCD or OLED but you had better have enough sound level and clarity to overcome the din of the party. The girls have to have the half-time show clearly and understand the audio from the commercials above all.

720p on FOX - *sigh* I would be willing to pay for a higher quality feed. Wondering if FOX will do a stream of the game on FOXNOW app at a higher quality? Sucks to have my LG B6 up scaling a major sports event from 720p. I remember the first time Full HD 1080p came out and the Super Bowl was around the corner. It was actually worth having the best TV out of all your friends.

The super bowl is just once a year, and if you're having a lot of people over for a party I doubt they're going to be overly attentive to the PQ. The premise of getting a TV based upon a one time event is crazy.

How does the Sony Z series stack up compared to the old Pioneer Kuro? Has Sony been able to replicate or improve on the deep blacks that was unique to Pioneer before they stopped making flat screens? This article seems to indicate that the Sony Z series is the best of the best but quite pricey.

OLED is better if you're talking about absolute blacks. You can't beat 8 million zones. And not everyone would confers with your conclusion. How does the article indicate that?
