So the 2018 LG OLEDs have the Game Mode dimness issue fixed. Not pleased they haven’t fixed it for 2017 models.

Maybe there’s a chance they will fix Game Mode on our 2017 models. Here’s hoping. It could be a simple firmware update.

What games specifically are dim? I played ratchet and clank, horizon zero dawn, destiny 2, Deus ex mankind divided, and last of us in hdr and they aren’t dark or dim whatsoever. I do not have to turn on dynamic contrast at all.

Our Ethernet port is limited to 100mbs but that should be plenty. At first I thought something was wrong too.

I literally bought the C7 yesterday. That said, I do a lot of gaming on my PS4 Pro and this all makes me a little worried and having some buyer's remorse. I couldn't afford a C8 anyway but am I going to just regret having shelled out for this TV or is the general feeling that LG will make it right?

Most of the movie looks great. However, there are a lot of near black scenes which show banding on these oleds so unless you have a killer set, be prepared for that.

Be prepared? I've already watched it. I should add that I didn't notice anything amiss, but then I don't watch content looking for problems.

Killer set as in like, a good panel lottery? I just bought the 55 C7P yesterday was excited to demo 2049 on it, but your post has dampened my excitement

Between that and an apparently bad gaming mode, I'm already wondering if I should've waited for Black Friday on a 2018 C8

8 months is a long time to wait... I just got my 65B7A last month and it's a panel lotto winner. I ran the tests the other day after 350 hours of not noticing any issues with the picture... and any banding visible is so faint when looking at the slides to where... I don't notice.

I also don't watch content looking for problems. If you are OCD enough you can probably go on a witchhunt and find something amiss... but that's not me. The PQ is amazing and I'm happy with my set.

Maybe I'm missing something since I haven't followed this thread closely on the issue of HDR gaming on consoles...but why not run game mode without labeling the input as PC with medium dynamic contrast for consoles? Input lag is exactly the same. It may not measure perfectly on a chart, but it can look nearly identical to Techicolor and often brighter than Technicolor. You can further use the in game adjustments to either brighten, darken, or even prevent clipping depending on what the individual game has to offer. HDR console gaming looks fantastic to me on this display and brightness is far from an issue.

I've played a dozen titles in the last year, just over half in HDR, and I've never had a dimness issue. I game with OLED light at 35 to 50, in the afternoon I just close the blinds, not really a dark room, but the screen faces away from windows. Games like MHW and Forza can seer your eyeballs. Destiny is a bit dark when in caves but I believe that's the game programming since I have verified black/white range with a disc/slides and intentionally dark games like GoW HDR are outstanding in detail in dark areas.

According this this article, LG received the second profile update from Dolby. LG has apparently already received this new profile, and has just started internal testing of it with its 2017 and 2016 models. The question is, how long will this internal test take? I bet this is why the update has not been pushed out to the public yet via auto update. Personally, I would rather wait for the final update then the partial update that has already be released.

Updates are really pretty easy. Granted you need to be able to download a file and transferring it correctly to a properly formatted USB drive. From there just plug into your running TV and its done in a minute or two. I've done it twice. It seems to a lot of file and equipment checking before even starting. I'm confident there is also firmware reset builtin if it goes wrong.

I bet the vast majority of owners just bring the TV home, set it up, and enjoy it. I have real mixed feelings about participating in boards like this one just because they seem to concentrate on problems that most people would never even suspect, let alone notice.

Very true. My panel has banding on a gray slide but when I watch movies or play games there are no gray slides to look at. Sometimes and I mean extremely rarely, there is a scene with near black but not quite black that shows a hint of it but really not a problem for 99.99% of all my viewing.

Someone needs to answer this for me. I’ve looked all over the internet and see reports of “these TVs are dim in HDR game mode now” but having owned one and playing multiple HDR games without seeing the picture as dim I’m confused. A couple games have screwed up HDR modes patched in that have poor shadow detail in a few scenes or raised black levels but there is nothing dim or dark about it. The only information I’ve seen says that some games are graded for 1000nits and others to 4000 or 10,000 and the latter are the ones with issues. However, I cannot find which games are which.

There are folks that will nitpick almost anything.
It differs per panel. It's quite apparent in Bladerunner because it has many near black scenes and I have some banding in the right center of the screen that is hard to miss. It's fairly rare to see, but this movie has a lot of near black scenes that bring it out. I don't appreciate you belittling my view of the movie on my screen. I'm not nitpicking.

Some people have better panels than I. I've heard it's less of an issue with 55's.

Basically give me a specific game and specific scene or part I can try to see how it looks to me because what I have seen thus far is fine to my eyes.
Ok here’s a few games that you’d struggle to play with lights on in HDR, backlight set to max:

1.) Forza Horizon 3
2.) PUBG Xbox One X.

PUBG is very hard to play in anything but a dark room.

In SDR this content is much brighter.

I agree with you, no problems here, but if you have Destiny or Destiny 2 I'd be curious if you get full detail when in very dark caves or dark raid areas. I can only crank up the brightness until things are washed out, but just on Destiny. https://www.avsforum.com/forum/40-ole...l#post55900408

Okay, this may be a dumb question, but is it possible that the OLED picture is TOO good? When watching Outlander (Starz streaming app on my Apple TV 4k), the picture is so real that it is blindingly clear whenever the director is shooting with a different camera, or when the actors are on a soundstage set, and when they are using stock footage. I find myself distracted by these things and losing my ability to suspend disbelief and just watch the show.

My TV is set up according RTings, and my Apple TV is sending Dolby Vision HDR to the set (passing through a Marantz AV7703 pre/pro).

All commentary aside about my choice in programming, I've noticed the same thing with other shows and movies. It's almost a three dimensional effect.

Any thoughts?

Correct, updating via USB is easy. I just usually wait until it is pushed to the tv and wait for the new firmware update notification. I have never felt the need to update earlier then that. Just never had (thankfully) any issue(s) that I needed fixed asap. Just personal preference...

This particular update is taking longer then I remember, compared to when it is released on the Korean site and it is pushed out as an update. But, the main point of my post is that since LG is still testing the latest profile Dolby sent them, that is a reason I think it is taking longer. FW 04.70.76 was a "partial fix." I could be wrong but I don't think they will push that update to the masses. I think they will wait until they finish testing this latest profile that Dolby has sent, and release a new FW when the DV issue is corrected for good.
