Eventually ALL TVs have this happen and the company focuses on the current line up. I would t be surprised to see this happen sometime this year. We may get one or two new features, but eventually it will just move to “fix only” firmware. It’s not a complete stop, it’s a feature add stop.

Dolby has a document that describes DV profiles. I'm fairly confident these updates are (minor) patches. As I've noted before Apple fixed the DV black problem with the 2017 LGs running .36 at least as well as the .65/.70 updates. They also "fixed" the DV problem with the Sony displays. Neither of those fixes are in the ATV4K release notes.

I might type 2K for 1080p.

Right but I think that for a few years these updates will keep coming if they are important updates to fix major issues.

For gaming use game mode. Otherwise yes. Actually my game mode settings and movie settings are the same except for hdr10 I enable dynamic contrast to low for active hdr outside of game mode. I didn’t mention the picture preset I start from. I use technicolor for sdr and hdr10. Cinema for Dolby vision. You have to do each one separate which is a bit of a pain.

I can’t trust rtings settings as they had contrast at 100 and now 95. Both of which clip whites. Contrast at 85 is the highest you should go. The AVS709 calibration download is a good start to check settings.

It d pends on a lot of things. The panel lottery, the room, the firmware version etc. all of that makes a difference.

I use 85 but I won’t fault someone if they use 90 because that’s what they get better results with.

Why would that be surprising. Updating the Dolby profile should be trivial and there are laws about providing support for a minimum number of years after purchase. The updates for Dolby vision profiles might even be mandatory to use Dolby vision for all I know.

For gaming though? Input lag is considerably higher in the other picture modes.

You continue to misuse the word profile with respect to DV. They're just bugs and Apple fixed the elevated blacks bug without patching my C7.

I know California and the EU have specific sparing for repair requirements. I don't know if there are equivalents in every jurisdiction. I'm guessing not and suspect that it doesn't cover software defects. The industry is full of un-patched bugs and I'd be surprised if LG behaved more like OPPO Digital than say Denon.

Give my settings a try. Many members in this thread have tried them, and are very happy with the picture quality. These were done with HDR Blu-ray movies in mind.

How to I configure the remote to control the volume on my AVR? I didn't do it during initial setup and the instructions say to use the "1/2/3/Input" button, but my magic remote doesn't have this button. I can't seem to find it in the menu options. Thanks.

I found 95-98 works great for us here. Highly subjective tho.

Dolby provides manufacturers with the latest profile for Dolby vision. The manufacturer implements this into their firmware. That’s what they have been calling it. I’m not misusing anything, it is literally called a Dolby vision bitstream profile. Dolby defines it this way
Quote:
A Dolby Vision profile is a subset of Dolby Vision feature configurations predefined by Dolby.
. Dolby vision is not like hdr10 in that the tv does whatever it wants. Dolby and the content provider have much more control over how it is displayed.

Also for the record the Denon 2200w is a 2015 model and is still scheduled to receive an update this year to allow Dolby vision pass through. So don’t discount the possibility of providing functionality and fixes for older hardware.

This is what I am talking about, engineering focus is to fix major issues if any popup, no features or adds to keep up with the changing times. If one want's the newer features and or newer WebOS they will need to get the latest and greatest model. Last update for the 2016 lineup was 6 months ago, lets see how long it takes for another one. Last update for the 2017 was a few weeks ago and I was simply saying they start slowing down as the engineering focus shifts to the next (2018) models and so on.

Take the 2015 model for example last update was a year ago and it was an HDR fix, off topic but HDR on that set is useless due to the lack of nits. Thus the reason I am looking to upgrade this year, anyone want to buy my EF9500?

It's in the media room and I can't enjoy HDR gaming on it nor watching an HDR movie as it too dim. So hopefully LG has fixed the issues prior and released a killer set. Im trolling the 2018 threads to get that itch to pull the trigger when the prices start to fall into the 2K range which is usually by summer, maybe sooner if the competition heats up.

Anyone actually going to upgrade from the 2017 lineup to a 2018? So far I don't see anything that is that dramatic to actually do so? Upgrading from a 2015 EF is a different story, the B6 can even also be borderline as it's a great set too, plus it's the last with 3D if one is into that.

Wall Mount Barkan 3400

I switched from the Official LG mount to a Barkan 3400 mount.

The reason being the LG mount doesn't come off the wall very much and has very little swivel rotation.

If anybody is going to use a Barkan 3400 mount I am posting a picture of how I had to mount it to my TV. An X type configuration will not work properly and the mount will slide to this position.

This is for a 65 inch TV

I don’t know if I being OCD or if this is something I should have a tech look at. After my tv is on for awhile I get a plastic popping/creaking noise from the back of the tv. I noticed it happens more frequently after the heat comes on in the house (there is a vent above and about 3-4 feet to the left where the tv hangs on the wall). There are no sound or display issues and the tv works flawlessly. I can duplicate the noise by pressing in the plastic on the back of the TV. Sometimes I hear the noise once an hour, sometimes it doesn’t do it at all, and then sometimes a bunch of times in a row. Is there anything I can do to correct this? Any help would be appreciated as the tv is only a few months old.

Thanks

Random, but I put on an old episode of The Office (US) on Apple TV 4K’s Netflix app last night and got a TV notification for “Dolby Surround is playing” or something like that.

First time I see that. Have any of you seen that too?

Well it's not a technical flaw rather sounds like the plastic is tweaking when heat is applied from either internally or externally (vent near by as noted). Maybe loosen slightly or tighten the screws on the back till it goes away. Sounds like expansion is happening and that is making the noises you are hearing from it binding. I am just suggesting something to try to eliminate it, you can call LG but sometimes they are not very helpful when it's not an actual break fix issue.

I can imagine LG won’t be very helpful like you said. I think loosening the screws may relieve a bit of the pressure. I can give that a try when I have someone over to help me get it off the wall.

I thought I was the only one having audio sync issues via Optical out. Everyone else claims it was fixed in an earlier firmware, but mine is just as bad as it always was. One day I'll get a new receiver and I'm hoping that will fix the problem.

Please may I share a realisation which is more related to Picture Settings than Calibration, however still relevant.
Apologies if this has already been highlighted.

The EDGE ENHANCER controls ON/OFF for SHARPNESS setting.
You can easily test this:
Turn EDGE ENHANCER to OFF, then change SHARPNESS and you will not notice any change.
Turn EDGE ENHANCER to ON, then change SHARPNESS and you willl see a big change in SHARPNESS.

I leave EDGE ENHANCER ON.
