Got my A1 for a week now - mounted on the wall in our living room. I'm using the basic setting profiles from Flatpanels - (Cine Pro) with some minor personal adjustments.

When the TV is not used for critical viewing, I set it to "Low" in the energy saving menu.

If I shut off the picture in the "Action Menu" and turn it back on again, the energy saving mode is disabled.

Can anyone here confirm this behaviour / bug?

Thanks for a great Forum - Geek Out

Peter

I'm trying to get my subwoofer to work with my A1E and I've used rca cables and put it to the headphone jack. I still don't hear anything.

I’m going to ask this but don’t want to offend anyone.

Regarding calibration, can someone tell me how it makes a big difference in doing a proper calibration vs just changing the settings based on what’s been posted in here...eg Als settings which look amazing on my A1?

From my understanding the A1 doesn’t have CMS so what would be the point of doing a calibration and how much of a difference could that make, I mean aren’t the calibration just tweaking the settings built into the tv anyway?

Excuse my ignorance.

Sony A1E OLED 4K Ultra HD Owners Only Thread [No Price Talk]

Bottom line is this: without calibration, coming off the production line due to panel variance and retailers settings the TV does not display the colors/blacks/gradients as filmed, processed and intended by the director and production team. Displaying the images as the director intended will often give you the best image quality (that is what the director and production team do for a living!) and for cinema enthusiasts it also is considered the only way to truly appreciate and evaluate an artistic work on its own merit. Because of this the TV manufacturers include calibration controls so that the TV can be made as close to a professional reference monitor as possible. A pro calibrator will do this for you.

However, some people prefer image enhancement technology built into the TV by different manufacturers, or personal settings (i.e. Al's settings) which changes the picture from reference but may give a less accurate, more pleasing effect if that is what you personally like (I think of it as analogous to using an instagram filter on a photo).

Just because the set doesn't have CMS controls doesn't mean that you can't or shouldn't calibrate it. Sony uses a system that aligns the CMS from the white balance/grayscale. This means the closer you align the white balance/grayscale, the closer the CMS will be. And yes, calibration will give you an even better picture than you get without it being done. If you are going to spend the money on an LG or Sony OLED, in my personal opinion, you should have the set calibrated. No user controls can give you the same picture quality as a properly calibrated set. I hope this helps

Take a look at this link to get an idea what a set looks like out of the box compared to calibrated.

If you like it, then that is all that matters.

Personally, I find the default Sports settings too garish, but I have a cousin that at least used to love that look on his TV when he watched football. For the most part, I use my same calibrated "daytime" Custom Profile settings when watching sports as any other broadcast program (DirecTV at 720p and 1080i), as well as most all other content while my room is relatively bright. I only switch to my even-closer-to-reference "nighttime" Cinema Pro settings when the room is darker on an overcast day, evening, or at night for more critical content viewing (i.e. movies with plenty of dark scenes). So, the answer comes down to how you want to use your profiles, how they may have been tweaked or not from the defaults, and what makes you happiest. I don't believe there is a "right answer" to this one -- just lots of opinions.

Enjoy that A1E!

Your better off anyway, there is a big cost in being one of the first owners. Better off buying a XBR-75Z9D today and in 2 years buy the 77" and probably still have extra coin in your pockets in 2 years compared to buying a 77A1E now.....

So has anyone heard about the Dolby Vision update for this TV. I thought we were getting it by July . Has there been any new info/time table in this?

Patience. The question is asked every few days in one of the A1E threads, and the same answer is given each time.

IMHO, some impatient enthusiasts started suggesting the July timeframe, not Sony, who has said nothing new from their original announcement other than creating the (non-A1E specific) Bravia DV video you may have seen in recent days. It makes us all more anxious to occasionally check if there is a new firmware update, but there is no new news.

OK, received the A1E yesterday lunch time and set it all up last night. Everything works so far and this is a beautiful piece of hardware to be sure.

Tested a few sources last night and swiftly reaffirmed that Xfinity is audiovisual garbage (more so than is evident on the 50" Pio Kuro) while the Revenant on UHD BluRay was a revelation that very nearly made me shed tears of happiness. Simply amazing PQ straight out of the box.

I have mild banding with some thin vertical lines and a big dark 'blotch' on the right hand side that I hope will go away with time. It's nothing that shows up in real world content so far, which is all that really matters to me.

Definitely an improvement on the 16' LG OLED that I've spent some time with in the past.

Okay @Al Leong

I finally tried out your patented "Sony Vision 2.0" on Daredevil. Very nice!

But I was wondering about the gamma setting being bumped up to +2. I thought HDR didn't use gamma, if not what is that doing?

Thanks
Dan

Hope it's ok to pose this question. Why are so many concerned about the "brightness" of the display. I'm simply looking for the faithful reproduction of the source content, & w/that as a benchmark I feel the A1E excels even beyond my wildest expectations! Thanks!

Overall image brightness above a certain black level.. the X1E chip for some reason tame the gamma uptick with HDR while retaining the black performance.. resulting in a "Dolby Vision" esque performance.. there's nothing in HDR I've thrown through those settings that hasn't been outstanding yet..

Try Arrival 4K UHD with the settings in a dark viewing environment.. it seriously shows off the processor handling capability of the TV.

I agree, when the TV is used correctly, the brightness can get really excessive with SDR content.

Thanks to D-Nice for recommending both R&B Gain to -3 as a starting point for calibration. Colors now look so much more balanced. Thanks!

I hope that Sony implements Dolby Vision as good as LG did on the C7 or i'm going to have to trade-in my A1E!

No, I suspect John is just being sarcastic and impatient as he did a while back, since LG already has DV, he calibrates panels for a living, and likely wants to explore Sony's DV implementation compared to LG's, while playing with the new CalMAN DV functionality on his own A1E (so he can tell us all about it - YES, PLEASE!)

I'd like to have DV as well, but I need my Denon AVR to also get its update to avoid snaking a temporary cable along my wall, over my mantel and and up my fireplace to where my A1E is mounted. Fortunately for me, there is almost no DV content I care about watching at this point, so getting the DV update sooner than later for me personally would simply help curb my curiosity and let me also explore what CalMAN can do with the A1E's DV capabilities, not my real need to watch pent-up extensive DV content I care about.

Yeah, I saw your post but wondered maybe it was recently delayed. Good to hear it's still planned for the coming months.

I'm in the same boat with my X7200WA and not really keen to run a separate HDMI straight to the TV either. Just like you, there isn't any DV content I'm interested in yet but I imagine, before the year is out, there will be some movies I'll be interested in and if DV is enough of an upgrade, I'll probably feel the need to run a separate cable.
