anyone go a1e to 940e or 940e to a1e?
Congrats (maybe) on your new A1E!

First, per post #1 , be sure to put A1E in your sig line or your post in this owners-only thread will be deleted by the mods.

I don't have experience with the 940e. That being said:
  • If size is more important than everything else to you, you have made the wrong choice. Only you can make that determination.
  • If you care secondarily about the brightest display you can buy, your choice of an OLED may have been a poor one. For many of us as OLED owners, it is not a concern given the other benefits, but it is a difference.
  • OTOH, you've owned an LG OLED so have a feel for what the tech is capable of. The big difference now is the overall design and processing your present Sony has, vs what you've seen in action before. Your A1E is the best OLED Sony has available to any consumer today.
I hope you enjoy your new Sony A1E as nearly every owner in this thread does. IMHO though, there are many good choices in TVs today, so as to if a larger same-price 940e is a better choice for you, I believe only you can answer that in the end. This thread is likely better suited to help you and other owners get the most out of their A1E, vs. try to convince you that you made the right personal choice. It's hard for any of us out here to put on your shoes.

DO though, enjoy your new A1E, and I hope it brings you many years of wonderful entertainment.

Most of us use Cinema Pro as our first choice, followed by Custom as our second for calibration or closest-to-pin manual setting purposes. I've never tried Vivid Mode except to quickly pass it by, and likely never will.

BTW, If you have not found it, we have a dedicated A1E Calibration thread. A couple of the pros own an A1E (and LG), and come here upon occasion, but I suspect the other thread is more of the place they orient to. . You'll find more specific info there. https://www.avsforum.com/forum/40-ole...on-thread.html

Got about 60 hours so far on the 65" Sony and it's looking better and better. I only avg around 1.5 hours a day on my display so i am tacking up the hours so when Dnice gets here i have enough to get it calibrated. I guess i should have jumped a few months ago. I never really did think the A1E would be much better than my 60vt60 for 1080p and 720p.

I am thoroughly enjoying my A1E. I just finished watching the Aussie film "Goldstone" Blu-ray set in the Australian Outback . The A1E was flawless. The movie has a number of aerial shots which you can feel vertigo set-in. There are also a couple of canyon scenes which were spectacular.

Perhaps it wasn't meant to be seen on such amazing monitor. (:

I have a lowly question - be patient, I am the opposite of a technology wiz. My internet is way slow (~12MB) for 4K - if I update it to 25MB, the appropriate YT and Amazon Prime and (with the appropriate subscription plan) Netflix will automatically go to the higher resolution or do I have to do something myself, please? Thanks.
I have 25Mbit currently. Netflix works fine in 4K. It appears to need about 16Mbit. Nothing to do (assuming your subscription level is the required level for 4k).

Youtube on the other hand can not do 4k with only 25Mbit. Looks to need about 35Mbit with their encoding. Instead of 2160p I get 1440p on youtube currently.

Man I remember that set. Crazy money.

Right about that time I got the pioneer 501 cmx for 6k instead. Had to buy video card as it was just a monitor.

Display Burn-in Prevention Measures

Sony appears to be utilizing the same pixel shift algorithm as LG to prevent display image retention/burn-in.

However, the Sony does not utilize the additional local dimming of static images and screen saver IR/BI prevention measures that LG utilizes in their branded panels. I am wondering why this may be given that these problems can arise in the 2016 LG panels relatively early in the projected lifetimes? Is there any evidence Sony may be using some alternative proprietary IR/BI prevention measures unique to its image processing software?

Has anyone had their display randomly turn itself off? I've had it happen twice, once a couple months ago and then again a few minutes ago. I've checked Eco mode, screen saver, etc. and everything is turned off. Could the TV OS be doing something in the background that might cause it to shut off? I'm not panicked yet but twice now has me Googling the topic. Both times we were either watching TV or using the PS4.

Is the automatic shut off ("sleep") timer "on"?

I checked, it's not. It's only happened twice in the few months that I've had it so I'm not sure if it's a setting but I'm not convinced, yet, that it's anything more than an OS thing. Hope I'm not wrong and that the TV doesn't have a slow-to-develop issue.

I ordered the following cable from Amazon to allow me to connect my old VCR to the A1E: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I used a multimeter and verified the pinout per Sony's Manual for the TV. I haven't actually hooked the VCR up to the TV as of yet as the VCR is in storage but by verifying the pinout I have high confidence the cable will work.

Watched the fight over my house last night. Several "boy that's a nice TV" from the crowd. I have to say it did look good. Can't discount the 65" size that sucked them in too. They all have smaller TVs.

Now if I can only get rid of that one band on this TV.

I was going to ask the same question. We all have that band just right of center and a couple of other small ones and I never see them when watching content. And I should add, they will never go away.

But I don't stare at the approximate location while watching to attempt to see if I can notice it.

Um I don't stare at it either but it does show and catch my eye. As video_analysis has preached and I as well, if it's on a slide it's in content.

I'm not trying to buck the collective here. Just making an honest observation.

I have been playing lots of space shows, like SPACE1999 older Starwars and such and don't see anything like that. Blacks looked washed out in that pic, but that could be the cam or my monitor. I just see pure black with the pretty spaceships as eye candy on my A1E. I called DNice and he gave me some settings to try when i first got it.

It's a commercial and the blacks are greys in it. Its not my camera raising levels or me playing with the brightness to make it show.

That's good. I'm not saying I see it a lot. And I will say it is spreading apart and not so defined so it less and less noticeable. Only 235 hours so far so it's still a baby. I'm reluctant at this point to exchange in fear of something worse. I have plenty of warranty left so not worried.

The television screen is the retina of the mind's eye.

What's the deal with the lighter-coloured rectangular "box" in the center of OLED panels. So far, I've yet to see a panel without it.

Yeah it's the first thing I noticed. I thought was just my panel but more and more people posting images with it.

you prob see because on each side of that light rectangle...you got slighty dark bars making you see the lighter portion. maybe?

my a1e gets here thursday... i really hope I don't have to go through this all over again with the sony after dealing with the lg!

trying my luck with sony a1e after what feels like being in jail when I look at 2 lg c7's I've had. Jailbars you can see in movies and games isn't acceptable for this kind of money. LG calls it "normal" maybe sony won't with same panel.
