NO AUDIO FROM TV APPS TO MY SPEAKERS

With some great input from VidPro, I was able to solve the “no audio from the TV apps” problem. Sharing the solution here in the hope that it helps someone else. I have a Denon X4200W, but this info should apply to any receiver that is ARC-capable.

Some background:
• All of my components are connected to my receiver (DirectTV, Apple TV, Roku 4, Oppo 203, etc)
• Using High Speed HDMI cables – all good.
• Receiver HDMI Monitor Out ARC port connected to TV HDMI (IN)/3 ARC port. Check
• Made sure ARC setting in receiver’s HDMI setting was set to “ON”. Done
• On TV, go to ACTION MENU > Sound adjustments > Advanced settings > Input related > Dolby Digital Plus output > Choose Dolby Digital. Also Done.

Everything was working in the usual manner – the components feed the receiver via HDMI, which sends video to the TV and audio to the 5.1 speakers.

Except, as with multiple other posts here, I still wasn’t getting audio from the TV Apps on HOME (Netflix, Amazon Video, etc.). Very frustrating, so I set it all aside for a day to think about.

The solution was pretty much a duh! moment. After years of working with these home entertainment systems which required multiple visits into Settings menus for tweaking, I followed that same approach, trying to find the setting(s) that would magically fix the issue and make audio appear from the TV to my 5.1 speakers.

Wait a minute!!!! That’s it. It doesn't work in the usual way. The TV isn’t connected to the receive in the same manner as all of the other components. The audio is flowing in the opposite direction – TO the receiver instead of FROM the receiver. (Please excuse the non-technical description.) As such, aside from some settings to turn ARC ON, there are no additional menu settings to tweak. ARC was invented to deal with this audio back flow and it works differently than what most may be accustomed to.

So, if there is no setting in a menu to enable the audio from the TV, how can I make the TV Audio play through the receiver to my speakers? The only other place to make the receiver perform an action is on the remote. And there it is – the receiver’s remote has “TV Audio” button. Pushed the button and the audio arrived from the TV to the 5.1 speakers. Fixed.

No mention of this button anywhere in the manuals or research I did and I haven’t seen any mention of it in the posts here. If it was mentioned elsewhere here, I apologize for the redundancy. If you are having the problem, make sure you are connected as mentioned above and try looking for some type of “TV AUDIO” button on your receiver remote. ARC-capable receivers likely have this (or similarly named) button.

I am glad you got this figured out. I just wanted to add another solution. For $70 or less, you can by a streaming device, plug it into the receiver and then treat watching content via apps like any other source. I have a Chromecast Ultra plugged into the back of my Denon that feeds the A1E 4K-HDR content. I did this for several reasons...one of which was that I don't expect Sony to keep their apps in the A1E updated...I know they didn't keep the apps updated on their blu-ray players for very long...at least not the ones I have owned.

Does anyone lose the video signal from their Apple TV 4K? I have an Apple TV 4K hooked up directly to my Sony A1E and when watching Hulu, Netflix or Amazon the screen goes black just showing the Bravia logo. Sometimes the audio continues to play but the screen stays black. This can occurs multiple times daily.

I have tried multiple HDMI cables and when I called Apple they recommended that I pick up their Belkin cable and if that doesn't work they will ship me a replacement.

I don’t have it hooked up directly, but through my AVR. No issues like you mentioned...yet.

Off. I turned it off a while back and don’t feel the need for it anymore. When I was using it others recommended Custom 3. I found that pretty good except for a slight amount of SOE.

I've experienced some instability with this OS 4.2 - something like you mentioned, usually after my partner plays a few games on it and leaves it running, seems to crash. I usually unplug it and plug it back in and it's back.
It doesn't happen during playback or playing of anything - definitely does not happen when playing netflix - only after, or when starting it up after a long binge of being on.

I have the 65 inch, the tv at random times makes a clicking noise like something is turning off and on. The picture stays the same doesn’t flicker. I unplugged my sound system, cable box everything but the power cord still does it.

Does the A1 give you full details of the actual refresh rate being used, such as 24Hz, 50Hz, 60Hz and resolution? If someone could post a picture of this it would be greatly appreciated. I’m about to request a return of my LG B7 that gives almost nothing away regarding its input (and horrible motion processing) ..

Also, I know the google menu system is not rated too highly, but will there be future updates or is this version final? In other words, is it like Apple iOS that you’ll be assured big revisions ?

I agree 100 percent. How are you going to announce Dolby Vision support but don’t release it till next model year? I would call that false advertisement. Hope they know they would have a couple lawsuits on their hands if not outright class action lawsuit

Last I have read is that they will announce the release date this month, but don't expect the update to arrive this month.

And 2018 models don't arrive until April.

I also wonder how many of them actually have any DV content they are waiting to watch and the other necessary equipment to do so.

It’s not about if the new 2018 sets arrive in April. It’s about saying this tv supports Dolby Vision in January 2017 and in December 2017 they still have not updated the A1E with that feature. So either they lied about support in the beginning and had to play catch-up or the X1extreme is not as powerful as they stated. Either way I bet you that we won’t get any kind of update until March. If that is the case I think there should a case for some me kind of legal action .

There's no case for legal action because a date was not specified as to when an update would happen. You could however file a complain with the FTC. Any way you slide or dice it your best course of action is to complain to the dealer where you purchased the product and Sony.

Or they are making sure it really does work (LG has managed to break DV support on a number of receivers in recent firmware somehow).

Not many UHD players can do DV yet, not too many AVRs can pass DV yet, and not many discs yet have DV. I think they may just be making really really sure they get it right. Or maybe Dolby is being super picky in certifying it. Maybe they are objecting to "Sony color".

I think many will be surprised to find when the A1E full features are active, which I've been explaining all year, they may like the dynamic HDR10 remastering of the A1E better than Dolby Vision.

This is the one feature the A1E has with HDR10 that makes it a unique tool of entertainment on it's own right.

Sony in a public release back in February represented that Dolby Vision support for the A1e would be available "by the end of the year"

Technically, they will have fulfilled their obligation of DV firmware updates commence on December 31, 2017 without fear of legal repercussions. If the release comes during the beginning of January, while technically actionable, the harm to owners would be de minimums, and hence unlikely to result in legal action.

However, if Sony doesn't have DV firmware available by February or March, they face significant legal exposure and potential liability for damages to owners. The later the release, the greater the damages. The only caveat being if Sony can establish that the delay was caused by factors beyond their control (i.e. Dolby's failure to cooperate and/or provide the necessary technical info to Sony in a timely manner)

I have to believe Sony is well aware of their potential exposure here, and is doing everything they can get get this firmware out ASAP

Sit tight for for a few more weeks before any desparation is warranted.

CES starts January 9 2018. There will be an announcement of some kind by then, maybe even a release.

I am experiencing this issue, especially first thing in the morning after first turning everything on. I believe it started after the November Android update but it may have been after TV OS 11.2.

I can browse content but can not see any video just the audio plays. Restarting the Apple TV resolves the issue.

Am I surprised that nobody has posted about this issue. Is any one else experiencing this issue?

AppleTV 4K no video.

I have tried multiple HDMI cables and when I called Apple they recommended that I pick up their Belkin cable and if that doesn't work they will ship me a replacement.

I have similar issue after the latest update, when set to 'match on content frame rate', On the app, when change programs, there is a black screen for 2-3 seconds before i can see the next....

So, what are the "damages"? Sounds like a class action where some lawyers will get a couple million and owners get a $5 voucher.
