hey guys, i bought a very cheap LG TV a couple weeks back, i stopped using HDR for gaming cause the HDR gaming mode made everything greyish, washed out, lifeless. I just figured this cheap "HDR10" TV just isnt actually capable of displaying actual HDR

i own the LG 49UJ635V , and just installed the latest firmware. But the gaming mode is still dark, is there anything im supposed to do? reset the tv?

Most likely just wrong HDMI Black Level or maybe brightness. Check both the TV and the gaming device settings for HDR.

Thanks for the help but the black levels are right, i cant put the brightness up too far, or else the picture gets washed out

its a widespread issue apparently:

So with the 2019 sets around the corner, are 2017 owners just SOL?

2016 owners got the brighter game mode back at the expense of some clipping.

2018 owners get a better standard EOTF curve plus dynamic tone mapping.

2019 owners get that plus custom tone curves.

And 2017 owners are stuck with the dim game mode or cinema home with an additional 40ms of lag.

Really sucks and I’m considering getting an HDfury linker or a new set. Playing Shadow of the Tomb Raider right now which has an excellent hdr implementation that tops out at 1500 nits but it’s still dim at times since the 2017 sets tone as if it’s 4000 nits since there’s no metadata from the console, and LG’s 4000 nit curve remains dim on the low end.

Playing AC Odyssey on the Xbox One X and the paper white setting is a godsend to getting some of the brightness back on my C7.

Is there any reason the max nit setting shouldn't be at 4000? It's my understanding that the 2017 sets assume the signal is 4k/10k nits since game consoles don't send any metadata, so it seems like you might as well crank it as high as it goes. Lowering it to 1000 doesn't actually make the image any better and there's no real difference in brightness between 1k and 4k nits when adjusting the slider.

LG still DESPERATELY needs to update their 4000nit tone curve on the 2017 sets. 7 series owners are being left in the dust.
