I've had my 55B7A for a couple of weeks after switching from years with an ST30 series Panasonic plasma. Overall, the OLED TV is stunning and viewing content on the bezel free display is much like being at the theater. Using a combination of the AVS and Rtngs picture settings, the colors are natural, blacks are deep and judder nearly non-existent for the most part. I stream all content using a Roku 3 along with control via the Harmony 650.

However, in VERY rare occasions there's a slight imperfection. If watching a movie where the room is dark and a flashlight or torch is used by a character, a split second blue artifact/line pops up to either side of the bright light, though as I say its rare. I called support who had me do a power reset to remove static, but nothing changed. It's not a deal breaker by any means; the device is FAR superior to the plasma so I'm happy to live with it. I'm curious if anyone else has noticed this and if so, whether there's a remedy. Thanks.

Question Start TV on some sort of home screen?

Just received my B7A and can't figure out if there is a way to start the TV on some sort of home screen. Right now, every time the TV is turned on, it is on the OTA tuner, and since we don't have cable, it's just loud static snow. I then press the home button and select netflix or whatever. But next time the TV is turned on, it's back to the static. Is there a way to avoid this?

Well, sure, but what about Plex, Hulu, and other apps that don't have dedicated buttons? My buddy has the C6 and it starts up at a homescreen with the app tray popped up:

"Mine looks like this when I turn it on"

Go to any app -> press and hold any number key -> see the app saved to said button for quick access.

Turn off tv -> press and hold the number key -> does the tv turn on and launch the app behind the quick access button?

This annoyed me too. The easiest workaround I've found is to watch a channel on the Channel Plus app (even if you don't ever plan on watching anything). It will boot up to the last channel you were on there, so at least no static.

We do not believe so.

But it is likely you can achieve what you want without it.

Last person I'd purchase a warranty through would be them honestly. They'll simply repair the crap out of your TV and never want to give you $.

No thanks

LG finally fixed PC Mode both for LG 2017 and 2018 OLEDs
(so no more washed out colors, color banding or other PC Mode HDR related issues with these sets)

Check your region/language official LG Support website to manually download/install via USB the latest firmware for your model.

Then following you can find latest calibrated profiles to accomodate this Major change, providing a more accurate SDR and a brighter/richer HDR picure quality for gaming and also for mixed usage:

For those who asked, I updated the LG 2017 OLEDs Calibrated Settings for X1X (and for Gaming in general) adding Option 1 and Option 2 for both SDR/HDR:

Please also note that:
  • If you prefer Option 2 ("non-PC"), remember to adjust again all in-game HDR sliders around 4.000 nits when possible (or re-hide in-game logos);
  • Both SDR/HDR Option 2 ("non-PC") profiles' Sharpness is now set to 20 as, differently than Technicolor/ISF, 20 is its neutral value instead of 10;
  • HDR Game Color of Option 2 ("non-PC") is back to its default of 65 instead of 55 as, differently than Technicolor, 65 is the color match between those profiles
  • HDR Game Dynamic Contrast of Option 2 ("non-PC") is back to MEDIUM for the best accuracy/luminance ratio.

Question about the increased sharpness values, how did you measure this? I've read multiple reports that the 2017 displays did not artificially soften if set to "0" with edge enhancement toggled off.

SDR/HDR Game Modes are different beasts compared to other profiles.
They're based on ISF Expert for SDR and HDR Cinema for HDR, but have different accuracy when using the same values of those.
For example their Sharpness value is not linked to Edge Enhancer setting at all, and just behaves differently.

Same with HDR Colors (correct at 10 points higher than HDR Cinema or HDR Technicolor, even with same Auto gamut), Dynamic Contrast (where Low is not Active HDR and both Low/Medium are not the same Dynamic Contrast post processing effect other modes have, but just a gamma curve increase, while High is real Dynamic Contrast and warp the gamma altering also color saturation and crushing black levels) and OLED Light, where for example the default 80 of SDR Game is equal to 60 of SDR Technicolor.

They're just different, and must be calibrated differently to make them as close as possible to calibrated SDR/HDR Technicolor.

Option 2 values slightly tuned:
  • SDR/HDR Game Color Temperature is back to W45 to perfectly match calibrated SDR/HDR Technicolor;
  • SDR/HDR Game Sharpness is back to 10 due to introduced artefacts in some other games/movies tested. Those were very marginal, but definitely not there in SDR/HDR Technicolor

Very small tweak for calibrated 2017 LG OLED's HDR Game mode:

  • V4.1: HDR Game Color value slightly tuned down from 65 to 62 to be even more closer to calibrated HDR Technicolor

An update for LG 2017 OLEDs - Calibrated Settings for Xbox One X / Gaming:

  • Added V5 - EXPERIMENTAL HDR Game profile tuned for HIGH Dynamic Contrast: it's a totally new proposal for a MUCH brighter HDR (even more bright than HDR Technicolor with Active HDR) trying also to eredicate most of HIGH DC negative effects and be as accurate as possible at the same time. FEEDBACK IS WELCOMED

To eliminate/compensate HIGH Dynamic Contrast negative effects on PQ:

EDIT (14/12/2018):
  • Raised Brightness from 50 to 53: this will fix most introduced black crush, while some will remain very slightly. It's the highest value that can be set before loosing "perfect blacks" of OLEDs;
  • Color Gamut set from Auto to WIDE + Color 44: when DC is set to High, I noticed that Auto color gamut will suddenly show wrong/muted colors (especially muted oranges/yellows and magenta) and all of them become undersaturated. Switching to WIDE made oranges/yellows back to normal, and considering WIDE is oversaturated with same settings compared to Auto, setting its Color to 44 gave back a very comparable accuracy to Technicolor
  • Color Temperature is back to W50

I'm very impressed by far with this new experiment, as I was able to achieve an even brighter image than HDR Technicolor with Active HDR, but with no highlights clipping (typical of PC HDR Standard) and mostly accurate colors. The only visible downside is a very very slight black crush, that can not be fixed without losing also perfect blacks, but it's not bad at all.

Both Battlefield V and Forza Horizon 4 look mind blowing with this new setup, but any FEEDBACK to further improve it is always welcomed.

Give it a spin and let me know what you think

LAST EDIT TO LG 2017 OLEDs SDR/HDR Game Modes:

  • V5.2 / (non-PC) HDR Game Mode is now the recommended option for X1X HDR Calibration (with Color back to 48 to counter some color washing added by DC, e.g. fixing "vampire skins")
  • SDR (All modes) recommended Gamma is back to 2.2 / MEDIUM (to counter noticeable black crush in movies)
  • V5 - EXPERIMENTAL promoted as the recommended HDR Game profile

LG 2017 OLEDs - HDR Game Mode - DEFINITIVE CALIBRATION:

  • NEW V5.3 / (non-PC) HDR Game Mode is now the recommended option for X1X/PS4 Pro HDR Calibration
  • SDR (All Modes) recommended Gamma is back to 2.2 / MEDIUM
  • Recommended HDR Luminance in games' slider (if available) is now 4.000 nits

+

  • Stealth HDR Game mode minor update up V5.3.2
  • Also updated all non-Game profiles enabling TruMotion with De-Judder: 0 + De-Blur: 0 to fix introduced motion stuttering on 60hz contents after firmware 5.80.xx (both SDR/HDR Game modes are not affected)
^^

More info and all calibrated presets available -> here

That's it folks.
As per "Definitive" tag, I really finished my ammo on LG 2017 OLED Series this time and I won't make any further tests after these results.

The only way to add improvement on top of this would be by LG to add real Dynamic Tonemapping also for 7 series (but probably this will never happen).

Until then, thanks everyone for all the feedback, it was an epic ride.

Make your HDR games scream! >:]

After playing A LOT of new, additional HDR contents (Games, 4K HDR/Blu-Rays, 4K/HDR Streaming) using HDR Game v5.3.2, I decided it's now time to do a partial step back from High Dynamic Contrast suggestion...
If High DC performed GREAT in many occasion with HDR Game (brighting up noticeable dimmer sequences, especially in particular movies and games' static menus and HUD), it showed too much color artifacts, black crush and/or highlights clipping to be considered universally accurate now.

Therefore, I updated again the HDR Game profile to v5.5:

  • Going back to Dynamic Contrast: MEDIUM
  • Going back to Brightness 50 (no need to raise it outside High DC)
  • Going back to Color Gamut: AUTO
  • Raising Color value to 60 (to offset a slight color desaturation of Medium DC)

This provided a consistent, more accurate calibration for an universal, mixed usage of HDR Game profile.

Cheers

Lightbulb LG 2017 OLEDs - All Profiles Re-Calibration (April 2019)

LG 2017 OLEDs - All Profiles Re-Calibration (April 2019)

  • ALL PROFILES UPDATED TO V7 ULTIMATE
  • Firmware 5.80.xx or above is required
  • Completely new re-calibration of all SDR/HDR/DV picture modes with new tools and after 4.000+ hours usage (based on new sonoftumble settings)
  • New Dolby Vision Custom Calibration file to apply via USB patch (updated on April 2019)
  • HDR Game mode back to a new custom profile based on HIGH Dynamic Contrast to match the new improvements
  • Added new in-game HDR suggested settings

Please not that this re-calibration goes in-depth also for all White Balance + CMS values, so do not forget to also update those sections when possible (and do not forget to also update the entire DV profile using the new USB Patch!)

Then give those completely fresh settings a try and let me know what you think...

Just made some improvements on top of new V7 profiles (which are now based on new "sonoftumble" re-calibration), bringing them to V7.1:

Changelog:

  • SDR Technicolor and SDR Game brightness lowered a bit from 53 to 51 (after noticing very slightly raised black in some patterns);
  • X1X Only: DV Cinema was switched with DV Game profile by default (with mostly same settings and basically identical PQ and Luminance to calibrated DV Cinema, but with 21ms input lag and same good motion): this was done to "future-proof" in case someday Microsoft will allow Dolby Vision gaming on X1X or Next-Gen Xbox One to be released next year, while still providing great PQ for Streaming TV/Movies;
  • HDR Technicolor White Balance was reset to its default as I noticed a blue tint with new sonoftumble's values, and a yellow tint with older ones;
  • webOS only: if you notice a dimmer Dolby Vision compared to X1X (or Apple TV) Dolby Vision luminance, I added the suggestion to switch to DV Game profile also there
  • HDR Game Color value was slightly raised from 44 to 48 to align to the HDR Technicolor improvement above

Ok, after playing with PC mode and a dozen of HDR games for a couple of days:

  • ALL PROFILES UPDATED TO V7.2 ULTIMATE (with minor tweaks, and all aligned with the goal to have the same PQ switching between them)
  • ADDED 2 OPTIONS FOR X1X/GAMING (Option 1: based on regular SDR/HDR Game; Option 2: based on PC Input/Mode + Input lag FIX!)
  • Firmware 5.80.15 or above is required
  • Added new in-game HDR suggested settings for Option 2

See the OP for more details and new Option 2 links, and let me know which is the Option you like the most.

Have fun!
