Ok I don't knw why haven't thought of this before smh but I tried the same Netflix content on my Panny ub820 dolby vision cinema default 50 brightness and the 2 shows which I really saw this was ozark latest season episode 1 and the Witcher both during the beginning of the episodes. ozark has got some strange Pixelated stuff happening on the internal app and on the panny player. Its like a checkerboard of lines or something so that leads me to believe its the show itself and the Witcher well it was jet black on the panny at default 50 but 2 percent gray like on the internal app so that makes me think it's something wrong wit the Netflix internal app on the lg cx

Lololol
According the CX thread, there is currently an issue with DV glow with brightness at 50 on your tv and LG is looking into it.

It's definitely mostly a Netflix thing, like how the opening credits of Mute are grey again when they used to be full black. Might have something to do with the movies being encoded with an old DV version not playing well with LG's updated library on their TVs. With DV, who knows.

I only really notice it with Netflix though. Vudu, Movies Anywhere, etc. seem fine.

Can we assume the firmware fix would apply to the 2019 series of LGs too?

LG 65" C9 OLED TV, Marantz SR6103 AVR, Emotiva XPS-5 G2 Amp, Apple TV 4K, Panasonic DP-UB8200 Ultra HD Blu-Ray Player, Playstation 4 Pro, Nintendo Switch, RSL CG5, CG25, & Speedwoofer 10 speaker system + four RSL CG34E height speakers, & Harmony 650 & Hub

Yea I was thinking it was Netflix as well but a highly respected calibrator said that lg was able to reproduce the issue on the cx and are working on a firmware so hopefully that firmware does fix it whenever or if it ever comes lol

I thought that was a separate CX issue.

The Netflix blacks thing is more than just a glow on the opening credits of Mute with the internal app.

That I don't know. I find it odd that on the 2019 and 2020 models, they both have the DV issue, while on the older tv's 2016-2018, it does not exist. If the issue occurs on the 2019 model, and they could not figure out how to fix the problem before the 2020 models came out, that would worry me. Either the DV profile they are using is defective, or the chip design is.

I went with the LG CX after the hot mess Dolby Vision HDMI implementation from the Sony sets but now there are different issues on LGs? Dolby Vision just seems like a mess in general. wouldn't HDR10 with whatever the manufacturers own flavor of tone mapping be preferred at this point?

The benefit of the newer OLED's such as you have, do better tone mapping of HDR10 than the older tv's such as my E6. HDR10 on my E6 is not all that good, whereas DV is superior. That gap with the new tv's has narrowed considerably, and you probably would not be able to tell much difference, although DV would still be better with scene by scene tone mapping.

Do we need to have Dynamic tone mapping on for HDR10 then?

I turned it off when I noticed it was on by default.

I just got a B9 a few days ago. I love the tv, but I have noticed the raised blacks. I tested the first episode of The Haunting of Hill House. The first couple minutes I noticed the not fully black bars. I tried forcing HDR10, but I still get the raised blacks issue in the bars. Is it because HDR10 is borked as well or because that particular show is really only available in DV or something?

For now, I’m just watching everything in SDR. It looks stunning and miles better than my previous tv.

I’m using the Apple TV 4K

Try watching the same scenes via the Netflix app on the tv. If you don't see it there with DV, then you will know it's not your tv, but the ATV

It's not just DV, HDR has raised blacks occurring when a custom 1DLUT is applied through calibration. Apparently LG is investigating, but this has been going on since last fall.

Ok, so I now know how Apple can fix this:

Apple is using Dolby Vision profile 5, which means that the processing is done in the Apple TV 4K itself. The LG OLEDS work perfect when the processing is done in the tv (because of the dedicated DV chips inside them), that's why Dolby Vision content on discs and in the internal tv apps are perfect. Much brighter image and free of elevated black levels. Apple should give the users this option in tvOS, just like users can do on their Oppo 203 bluray players. This would fix this problem once and for all and to me it seems a simple fix.

I've presented this solution to Apple, let's hope that they take note. It's been taking too long now.

Klipsch Reference Premiere: 4 x RP-280's, 1 x RP 450C, 4x RP-500SA’s and dual R-115W's
Marantz 7011 AVR
LG OLED C9 65 inch

I really want to get this device again. I just want to know for sure if they will fix it or not. I have heard that they have fixed problems with older OLED’s, so is there hope this gets fixed as well?

I’m sure Apple is fully aware of this since Dolby is a close partner. Isn’t a new Apple TV supposed to come out anytime now? At least that’s the rumor so perhaps the new hardware will fix things. Of course Apple will want us to buy something new instead of just a patch.

I’m not sure. At first I didn’t think I had the problem with my C9 but I darkened the room and I was able to see it close up to the screen.

My solution is to not use an Apple TV. Why introduce another complicating source? Why buy anything from their store if things like Atmos is broken?

BTW, SM white balance has alleviated my HDR/DV black issues until LG resolves the raised blacks issue with LUT's.

The only problem is that my 2016 can not process player led DV, so why is it working on my E6, albeit with elevated blacks? If i force my OPPO 203 to player led for DV, all I get is a green and purple mess. So it can't be that the ATV is doing the DV work.

I’m getting raised blacks on video games using hdr10 as well now. Ps4 pro. Days gone and assassins creed origins both have loading screens with grey screens instead of black. Dropping brightness to 49 fixes it. I don’t know if it’s just those particular games or what. I switched to SDR for games now too. I’ll just wait till all this hdr stuff gets figured out. SDR is enough for me for the time being.

If you have a CX, that's a known issue with the 2020 models.

That’s weird. The 2016 models all have a dedicated Dolby Vision chip for processing inside. Player-led on the Oppo 203 was working perfectly fine on my B6. Most of the time green and purple indicate that there could be a HDMI cable issue. Are they certified cables?

Mind you, the Dolby vision profile Apple use now was developed especially with Sony OLED tv’s in mind after a firmware update as a band aid. It was a messy year for Sony since no HDMI DV sources were compatible with the tv-led profile. Before the firmware update Apple used the processing in the tv if I recall.

Days gone has elevated blacks on the loading screen in the beginning on my cx I dont think it was intentional because before it clicks to hdr on that same loading screen the screen is pure black
