2017 LG OLED Latest Firmware 04.70.70 (2-23-18)

LG OLED Firmware 04.70.70 was released today on the Korean LG website (2-23-18)

In the release notes it has the following that was updated but possibly more was updated / fixed.

Improved Intermittent Power On (04.70.70)

Heres how to manually update if one wants to, the US site does not have the release yet and I am sure the push will lag behind.

I will record updating to this version and will post later today. EDIT (Here you go). Everything went well

Korean Link

https://www.lgservice.co.kr/search/d...currentPageNo=

In the video I show how to navigate the Korean website but I am sure many already know the drill.

Upgrade if you wish as I am just sharing info, I usually do as I find they tweak things that currently annoy me but stay silent about it or maybe admit to it (just a guess). This is why I say "possibly more is fixed".

Well don't be fooled, only the last line was added since the last update.

Line "U" is the only new add to the change log, but like I was saying they really don't give it full effort to log all changes or improvements etc.

What you can say is there has been lots of changes and or improvements since the initial release

Agreed. I find it hard to beleive that a firmware update consisting of only:

Ⓤ Improved intermittent power on (04.70.70)

IS only in the release.

bummers, which movie on AppleTV and or a demo to try? I have an AppleTV 4K on another 4K set in the bedroom, I can move it to the LG later tonight or tomorrow to test.

Can't say I personally use the AppleTV too often, just for other stuff

Others directly affected by this issue that have also updated are already reporting the raised Blacks on DV over HDMI issue is fixed for them.

reading over there it looks to be fixed in .70, thats good news!

Like I was saying they fail to tell us consumers what exactly they did in the last update except for something trivial.

I will look to test as well but will get at it later.

Can you test Interstellar? The moment the credits begins is a festival of gray where it should be black, if it's now black, then it's fixed 100% sure

If you want you can refund it later, they will give you the money back within 5 days

Remember to test it with the untouched settings of Dolby Vision Cinema mode

The latest fast and furious movie had fluctuating blacks...to an extreme degree and would be good source material

Weird. I have a B7 and have done 2 previous downloads from the Korean site so I know the drill. I downloaded and put it on my USB drive as usual. The installation started and got to about 30% and I received a message that the install was aborted because it was not for my television. I am in the USA. Any thoughts?

It worked for me (OLED55B7A).

The obvious idea is that you somehow got the wrong download. If it's not that, I can't explain it.

SOLUTION! Defective USB drive. I used a brand new USB drive and downloaded with no problem.

That would be my thought as well, I didn't get a chance to comment but I have seen that prior, some of those cheap USB drives suck as well as some name brands. Pot luck these days and what's worse it that some name brands are actually counterfeited so much you even have to watch out for that.

I had no issues updating to .70 and use the same USB drive each time so I know I will be good to go each time.

The PUSH and the US LG website always lags behind the Korean site except for the last update, not sure why that changed for that release. I am guessing something was in there they needed to fix ASAP and get out to the masses.

I would like to say that from .36 to .70 has to be lots more on going and or updated. One thing to note is that this software does apply to a few other models beyond our OLED's.

I'm about to install this today. I have the Apple TV 4K. What's a good movie to test to compare the before and after? Is it Interstellar or is there any other movie that's better?

they say Interstellar credits are the best bet, look for grey during the credits.

I picked up F8 but haven't seen any issues with it.

Anyone want to send me a Interstellar iTunes code

I have it on another format so getting it again is pointless just to test.

HOLY ****, DOLBY VISION OVER HDMI IS FIXED!!! - no more elevated black levels via HDMI on my Apple TV 4K!

Just updated my LG OLED B7A via USB to the 04.70.70 firmware on the Korean LG site. I was on the 04.70.36 US firmware before this.

Here's some proof. Here's the Mindhunter show on Netflix on episode 8 at around 8:50 minutes in. That scene where he's waiting outside on his stoop and his girlfriend arrives on a car had the black bars turn very gray on 04.70.36 while watching on the Apple TV 4K via HDMI 1. My Apple TV 4K is on the latest 11.2.6 public firmware.

For my test screens below, I used the Dolby 'Cinema Home' preset as I know that preset had even more issues with black levels. Using default presets with brightness at 50. Also tested with Dolby 'Cinema' (which is my day to day preset) with brightness at 50 as well to make sure both presets were fixed and they both are!

Here's the BEFORE on version 04.70.36. Notice the black bars turned gray, it looked horrible:

Now, here's the AFTER on firmware 04.70.70. Voila!! The black bars remain inky black! Plus I find the colors look better too!:

Edit: here's a cropped, zoomed in look so you can see the difference better:

BEFORE (04.70.36):

AFTER (04.70.70):

It's fixed!! I'm so happy right now!

I can confirm that pc mode HDR is not fixed in the latest firmware - still a lot of colour banding in 4:2:2 mode

LG's 04.70.70 firmware fixes elevated black levels on Dolby Vision via HDMI

HOLY ****, DOLBY VISION OVER HDMI IS FIXED ON 04.70.70!!!

I've been reading about this issue (even though I don't have the problem, because I don't have a external DV source), and I am so happy for you all that the problem has been solved!

However, looking at your before and after photos, I can't see any difference. It must be like those find the 7 differences between these 2 drawings. I must be bad at game.

And that lamp on the right, is that a reflection from your living room, or part of the movie scene? Looks like the lamp is carrying a six pack of Schlitz.

I can see the differences in the pics (easily), but this poster's comment may prove this issue is really OCD in nature rather than a stark (sky is falling) issue that common viewers are able to pick up on.
