I am a fan of the Harmony remotes, but they no longer are fully adequate to replace cable and TV remotes with features like voice control, and that magic little magenta teardrop leaning to the left.

We use the Harmony for activities other than TV watching, but use the cable box remote or the TV remote when it’s just plain old cable TV, or streaming built into the TV. Either remote controls the TV volume, which in turn controls the receiver volume. It also takes care of power up and power down.

I would recommend turning off HDMI link on the PS4 instead of disabling it on the receiver. This allows the system to function fully without changing anything else. Then I would also get a Harmony to round out the remote capabilities.

Yup that is one option but the issue is likely not limited to the PlayStation but all CEC enabled devices connected to the Marantz. CEC interaction with the combination of LG and Denon/Marantz products is just borked.

Totally agreed. CEC is a great idea, but implementations thus far have been inconsistent and incomplete. CEC and activity based remotes are somewhat at odds with each other. CEC wants to control everything through the back door, whereas Harmony wants the control plane to be inside the remote, and to control every device individually through the front end.

I suppose that how long the list of other devices is, and how often each are used is a factor.

I also have exactly zero experience with Denon or Marantz gear since AVS was a dial up bbs and only had two sub forums, VHS and CRT.

As i understand it, it's a mix of noise reduction and sharpening, which seems a bit like putting a humidifier and a dehumidifier in the same room to let them fight it out. Joke credit: Stephen Wright

I dont use it unless I'm frantically trying to fix bit starved content, and it doesn't really help.

Question OLED 77C8PUA Mounting Question

I just ordered a 77" to replace my 65 E6P .

They both use VESA 400 x 200, but, I'm wondering if anyone knows the dimensions from the bottom of the TV to the VESA holes. Hoping I can pop it over my mantle using the existing mount.

Thanks!

LG OLED65C8, no sound using Netflix/Amazon Prime

I have purchased a LG C8 and can not get audio from the T.V. when using Netflix/Amazon Prime on my Onkyo RC160.

I don't think my older Onkyo does ARC but I was thinking I could just use an additional HDMI cable ran from my new TV to the Onkyo and choice that input on my receiver and get sound but that does not work either.

Are my choices limited to using an optical cable or purchasing a new receiver capable of ARC?

Thank you

Just use optical. It supports Dolby Digital 5.1, so it's not bad.

Also, there is a C8 thread here.

I appreciate the input, but don't you notice in Windows Explorer when you go above 93 on contrast, no matter what the oled is, the whites turn to like slightly yellow and the folders look way saturated? I have my settings when in Windows at oled- 29, contrast- 85, brightness- 48, picture- expert dark and all post processing off.

From the bottom of the display to the bottom vesa holes is about 8" IIRC. I basically had to do some re configuring when I switched from my 65E6 to 77C8. It is 7 or more 110% for sure and I'm pretty sure it was 8 inches.

77” C8 wall mount

In anticipation of my 77” C8 I am looking for recommendations for wall mounting bracket. I’d like something that is fairly slim but also adjustable to be able to pull away from the wall to make hooking up components easier. The TV is going to be on a large flat wall so I don’t need full articulation. Anyone here have any recommendations with what you’re using? The mount I’m leaning towards is this one https://www.sanus.com/en_US/products/mounts/vlt6/ but I’m not sure if the release tabs will hang below the tv and be visible.

No, there is no saturation/color change here when using 100 contrast in Windows, also no clipping. I'm outputting 8 bit fullRGB when using my PC. It might be different if you use 10/12 bit YCbCr.

What Black Level setting do you use?
I noticed when set to low you loose a lot of details in dark scenes.

The correct Black Level setting depends on what you have your PC output set to:

Full RGB (0-255) --> Black Level High
Limited RGB or YCbCr (16-235) --> Black Level Low

I’m guessing this carries over to the PS4 as well? What’s the consensus— set it to Full for games and Limited for watching movies?

That AVR is HDMI 1.3 only, and ARC was an HDMI 1.4 feature, so it certainly does not support it. And even if it did, it would not support DD+, only DD, so it would have issues with the encoding too. Optical would be limited to DD so that should work fine.

I have that mount and it is excellent. My 77" oled is on a stand but I have a 65" TCL on the Sanus. The release tabs are pushed up out of sight after use, so you won't see them. Sanus is top notch for mounts, highly recommended.

You either get a slim mount or a mount that articulates. I recommend a slim/flat mount otherwise when you are done your TV will not look so good being so far off the wall, sure wire management is a little more difficult when mounting but it is worth it everytime......

Is there a way to see in the TV info the bitdepth the TV receives? And if I connect my PC to the C8 for watching Movies (1080Pand 4K HDR using madVR), should I select PC mode input or leave it as HDMI X input mode?

Thanks!

Until I get a professional calibration, I am inclined to modify some settings to be similar to what is working for SDR. Specifically, adjust the White Balance in the two Dolby Vision modes (Home and User) to what I have in SDR.

Thoughts?

Bumping this for any thoughts on how people have tweaked their HDR settings to reduce the OOTB oversaturation of skin tones.

On my C8, I personally don’t find skin tones oversaturated, at least using Cinema Home mode with 4K UHD Blu-ray and Netflix Lost In Space.

I do find reds oversaturated for Amazon Prime Jack Ryan, but I blame the Amazon source for that.

Both Netflix LIS and Amazon JR are Dolby Vision presentations.

There may be individual unit variation in calibration however.

I finally am part of the 4k family (LG 55" C8 oled). I am very happy with this set. I see no problems with the screen but keep in mind im coming from a 1080p set. Im not using the YouTube app nor any apps from tv at least so far. I do hook up my laptop to this tv to view YouTube which leads me to this question i have. When i watch 4k clips this way am i getting true 4k signal or upscaled 4k? My laptop is not 4k and the hdmi cable im using is version 1.4 oh and am i getting true HDR? I have the picture mode set at HDR Effect Strong . I dont see a PC mode selection...

I've spent a bunch of time dialing in my SDR settings (Technicolor Expert, and the two ISF modes), and have been trying to do the same with HDR/DV. In fact, I've posted earlier in this thread about it.

Until I get a professional calibration, I am inclined to modify some settings to be similar to what is working for SDR. Specifically, adjust the White Balance in the two Dolby Vision modes (Home and User) to what I have in SDR.

Thoughts?

I do find reds oversaturated for Amazon Prime Jack Ryan, but I blame the Amazon source for that.

Both Netflix LIS and Amazon JR are Dolby Vision presentations.

There may be individual unit variation in calibration however.
Thanks; I need to play around a bit more with it, and check out the LIS content. I was watching some HDR stuff on YouTube last night, and Cinema Home seemed better than Cinema.
