It could be that I kept my 'automatic update' function off. I probably got lucky. I'm going to wait to see if LG addresses it with an update or discussion, and then act accordingly.

Nothing that with a good calibration you can fix, but how many of you want or can effort that. And not forgetting the unlucky ones they have already paid for it and have to redo it.

As a guy doing my own calibration, I am happy as I see issues fixed, even if I have some work to be redone. But as one of the 95% owners, I feel cheated.

As already reported by other ones, here the new and the previous and the new RGB level and the Near Black Level

The Dashed line are the previous one. You can see how my previous calibration (and the same is valid for default) is corrupted resulting in crushed black and how much RGB color has to be added for not having a too vivid/punched immage.
Hi, does your picture look better with the new version after the calibration?
What do you use to calibrate? Are there any affordable or reasonable options if you don't use it for business? Wondering if its possible to rent calibration tools. Thanks!

Kim

Had the issue before the latest update, now the problems are definitely much more rare, PQ still amazing.

I'll try to set up a drop box later today. That way those that need it can get it.

Of course I have had image improvment with calibration, but if my previous OooB was good enough, now it is not.
I am planning for business, but have practiced at low cost. Basically you need a meter X-Rite i1Display Pro, 250 $, and a free program (HCFR) and a lot of patience. A pattern generator helps not running out of patience. I use this one, 80$, Raspberry based, but in HCFR thread you can find more options (maybe you already own one of them)

Let me ask more clearly. Does your picture look better with calibration in this firmware version than the picture calibrated with the prior firmware version?

No, the PQ is in general the same. Cannot tell about macroblock improvments, but for sure I have not seen anymore the black flashing effect.

Here is factory defaults with 04.10.15, those are pretty good even if you don´t do any calibration:

However, that's at SDR, gamma 2.2, and the TV's black level setting set to "low"

Having read here yesterday that YCbCr uses the full range of values (0-255), I set the TV to black level of "high"
Woah just a minute. If I misled you in this post I did not mean to.

To be clear: just because there is sometimes some "extra bonus" Super White content in the range 235-255, does not mean you should change the black level! With YCbCr, black is ALWAYS at 16, and the Black level should ALWAYS be set at "low" or "Limited range".

Quote:
Is there, truly, a "correct" setting for "black level" on these TVs when the output device is using YCbCr? I recall that RTings recommended "Low" seemingly independent of output device.
Yes. With YCbCr, black is ALWAYS at 16, and the Black level should ALWAYS be set at "Low" or "Limited range".

If it's easier to remember, Black level is Hardly ever set to High

Since the last few pages are complaints about the update I just want say it’s made a substantial improvement in my picture quality. I’m very satisfied with LGs fix, near black mess, flashing and macroblocking with SDR is vastly improved on my panel.

There is no perfect display, quit looking for faults and enjoy

After installing the new firmware and the talk of black crush and 2.9 gamma at 5 IRE how does one without calibration tools know it they have gamma crushed at 5-30 IRE? I have checked every test I have and my set using Technicolor at 50 brightness and Bt1886 gamma is passing every test perfectly. The AVS709 pattern shows 17 flashing strongly. Wizzywig's Near Black 16-27 test pattern show all the appropriate squares with nice gradations between each level. Even the Spears and Munsil brightness test shows the checkerboard pattern on the left side. I would think black crush would show itself in one or all of these tests.

I'm staying "fat and happy" since I have no issues with my current picture quality. I'll wait to see how this shakes out and what people on this forum say, and what Vincent T. says, and whether there is some further update. As long as the PQ is great now, I don't see a need to rush into something. I generally like to keep up with updates on my displays, but I don't see any issues with my set currently even with the variety of programming I watch. So I figure that if the update makes any noticeable change, it is more likely to make things worse than better.

It just may be that the pattern can’t pick up something that granular we are taking about .5 or so in gamma . In fact I recall 5% was around 2.6 ootb so that even a more subtle difference .

Well, calibrations are not free, so that's what makes the decision more difficult. They typically cost anywhere from $400 and up. So the "is it worth it" question can be a tricky one. If you're Bill Gates (i.e. wealthy), you should probably get one. OTOH, if you're satisfied with your set, you have to consider whether the expected improvement from a calibration, which might be marginal or might be more significant depending on the skills of the calibrator and your starting point, is worth the money.

I had a set calibrated a few years back, and while there was some improvement, I decided not to calibrate my Panasonic plasma that I got rid of a few months ago, and I'm not going to pay $400 to have my C8 calibrated, because I don't think any marginal improvement in the picture is worth the expenditure.

But everybody has to decide this for themselves and there is no easy answer. It involves a weighing of the potential benefits (which are somewhat unknown) vs. the cost.
