Is there a quick list of things I need to check off when examining the OLED after taking delivery to make sure I have a good panel?

This suggests one can inject more light into the picture with other controls before raising the black floor ... i.e. there is extra head room available to inject more light into the picture. Some controls inject a lot of light per click ... some controls inject very little light per click.

Try raising CR a couple of clicks or chg'g the dark level feature from low to high to beautify the picture more to ones liking ... then see what happens to the 5 IRE brightness control.

I had to switch to 1.9 gamma with minor adjustments on .50 update.

My opinion is that there is little you can do in such a short amount of time to make sure you have a "good" panel. This is because it takes a couple hundred hours (and several automatic compensation cycles) for the display to settle in.

All that you really can do is to try to make sure you don't have a unit that is obviously defective. If it turns on, displays an image, and doesn't have dead pixels or obvious visual anomalies, then I think you accept delivery. After 200 hours or so the display will settle in and you can evaluate (hopefully while still within the return window and certainly within the warranty) whether you have a "good" panel.

And PLEASE remove the plastic film from the back of the unit!

Is there anything specific I need to do to “break in” the panel for the first 200 hrs?

No. Just watch a variety of content and enjoy. Set the SDR picture option to Technicolor Expert or ISF Bright/Dark (depending on your preference). Set the HDR picture option to Technicolor Expert. Check the FAQ for basic setup (like turning off power saving, or whatever it's called).

Ran break in slides for 96 hrs. People say it's not necessary. Learned through this process to use Pixel Refresher to get the darkest slide to look uniform. Pixel Refresher is on LG unit and takes 1 hr to complete ... while the unit is off. Also learned the OLED panel was very uniform with no dead pixels ... that I could see.

Took the slides and loaded them into a USB drive. Inserted USB drive into OPPO203 player and ran the slide show in fast mode ... did this by clicking on one of the color slides in "Photo Mode", then hitting the fast forward button a couple of times. The screen will say "fast".

Yesterday, took a look at black glow while in HDR. Running v03.00.30 firmware (haven't upgraded firmware yet). Major glow. Had HDR settings at 100 OLED Light, 100 CR, 50 BR. Had to lower CR = 67 and BR = 47 to stop the glow. OLED Light had no effect on Black Glow so it was kept at 100. Will tweak it more tonight ... forgot to readjust BR again after lowering CR.

Did this by watching a dark space scene (in pause mode) in 4k HDR movie Ender's Game. It's a scoped movie so there are black bands on top and bottom of screen. Looked at the top band (not the outerspace scene ... the outer space scene is there so the picture is not bright when looking at the upper black band), saw the glow and reduced BR and CR accordingly. This is HDR not SDR so (guessing) 5%IRE Brightness Control is not available.

Looked at outer space scene in 4k HDR Ender's Game and noticed (after black glow was eliminated) there were dark green blotches activity pulsating. Remembered that there are 2 types of blacks in video ... that from the motion picture camera and that from CGI.

Looked at 4K HDR Prometheus for blacks a few years ago. There were 2 outer space scenes where the blacks were uniform and another scene where blacks varied between 0% to 6 to 7% SI. Concluded one scene was CGI (computer generated imagery) making the blacks and the other scene was from the motion picture camera and this was black noise. So sometimes there is nothing one can do with black noise.

For something to do, ended up generating a "nano" "S" shaped curve in gamma around 5% signal intensity (amplitude) to drive this black noise below video black (level 16) ... one can do this with Light Space, eeColor and LUT calibration.

Don't use Enders game as reference for adjusting black level in hdr. It being an earlier release actually has elevated black levels at the source. It's the only hdr movie I have where I have to lower brightness

Did you use photoshop to figure out blacks were elevated ... maybe a simpler way?

Does the E8 have gallery mode like the C8? I am assuming it does but I haven't seen any videos of it in action. I am curious to see how it looks relative to the C8 because of the soundbar. Does anyone have a link to the E8 gallery mode in action? Particularly wall mounted as this will be going over a fireplace and not on a stand.

Bottom line is this, imo:

Physical media>streaming>cable/satellite

GOT had so much noise in the dark scenes via DirecTV that I became extremely irritated. I then loaded up HBO Go and it was much better, but no where near as good as the discs, which is to be expected.

The LG Oleds are garbage in, garbage out.

No, it's just one of the original hdr releases when they didn't really have set manufacturing guidelines. I have viewed it on multiple iterations of lg oleds. It's the source itself when mastered into hdr. I don't think the blu ray release was like that if I recall. Can't remember which forum it was discussed on, but was almost as if when it was mastered for 4k they did so thinking with 4k black would be pc level 0 rather than video level 16 so instead black is now theoretically 16 steps higher than it should be. You can google it. Lionsgate had issues with numerous early releases. I think expendables had issues too

https://www.avforums.com/review/ende...y-review.12742

Link that discusses the issue

I have an E8 and yes it does have a gallery mode like the C model.
The black plastic bar that is used for the stand attachment does show on the bottom of the glass giving it a floating in space look but that may not be ideal over a fireplace like a C8. There is no bottom soundbar on the E8 like there was on a E7.

Hi everyone. I've been reading this site thoroughly the last month while debating between a C8, C9 or Samsung. Got the C8 on an excellent deal and have been blown away with this being my first 4K TV.

I'm curious about connection setups preferences within the community. I bundled my C8 with an SK10Y sound bar. Currently, I have them connected via ARC with an Apple 4K TV connected directly to the sound bar and an XBox One X directly to the TV. My reasoning:

• I don't want to lose input lag on the video games, hence the XBox and C8 marriage.
• I noticed a slight lip sync inconsistency when connecting the Apple TV directly to the C8 and then playing the sound bar through Arc.
• Regular content, such as streaming via PS Vue, sounds better with the Apple TV connected directly to the sound bar.
• Dolby Vision and 4K pass through seems to work fine on the sound bar.
• In all, it feels like sound loses something when traveling via ARC passthrough but the picture quality does not.

To be honest, I kind of prefer the TV speakers. It has enough punch, but an Atmos movie definitely makes a difference with the bar. Again, curious of the community thoughts and anything you think I should try.

BTW, the TV came with firmware 4.10.15. Sounds like I lucked out with that.

Okay interesting. Thanks. I guess I'll just have to see how it looks when I get it hung. I'm sure it will look great regardless and be a strong improvement over what she has now. But in your opinion, would the C8 be a little more aesthetic? I'm going to stick with the E8 just because she doesn't have a sound system so the improved sound performance of the E8 over the C8 seemed worth it to me (price difference was only about $150, and any sort of additional sound system to go with the C8 was out of the question due to aesthetic considerations).

The Sound on the E8 is ok, pretty much the same as the C8 with a little more power. With the E8 you have to allow space below the tv for hanging as the Glass extends below the panel . The C8 is more ideal for hanging IMO as there is nothing below the screen. The speaker set up is pretty much the same on both sets as it is on the back of the tv in a plastic enclosure. As I stated b4..there is NO separate soundbar on the E8 as there was on the E7. Hope this helps..
CORRECTION:

yes the plastic strip can be removed.!!! I just did some searching and found that even though it's very tight it can be removed and I was able to do it very slowly..KOOL...

see my correction above..there is a way to carefully remove the plastic strip. It's snug but can be done as I just tried it and it works.

So now the only hanging issue is the extra inch or so of glass below the screen itself.

For something to do, ended up generating a "nano" "S" shaped curve in gamma around 5% signal intensity (amplitude) to drive this black noise below video black (level 16) ... one can do this with Light Space, eeColor and LUT calibration.
It's also possible with Calman. .

And this gamma change is one of the things (the main one being much better near-black dithering) that LG have done with firmwares .31, .50 and .55 but many people hate it and are complaining about "crushed blacks". Impossible to please everyone.
