I had a chance to put my meter on firmware 4.10.55 this morning. I can report that near black response is the same as firmware 4.10.31. I didn't take the time for a full 2 hour warm up before measuring, but the response was just like my prior calibration.

Note: This is for ISF Dark SDR only. I do not have a pattern generator for Dolby Video or HDR. Maybe someone else on here can confirm those modes.

p.s. I found the calibrated 4.10.31 picture even better than calibrated prior firmware picture except for color contouring on low bit rate content. I have confirmed that the imperfect color contouring remedy has been restored in firmware 4.10.55. So for me 4.10.55 should be the best yet.

p.p.s. I won't be able to watch Sunday's GOT until Tuesday night, so please no spoilers folks.

It seems a pattern is emerging. Each episode there are reports of problems from people with many different makes of TV. It seems that the excessively low bit-rates on some outlets are very much to blame for the poor PQ, to me. We know that this exacerbates the near-black overshoot problem that we have with our TVs.

For me the dark scenes were not that bad. I was generally able to follow.

But the grey scenes when the dragons were flying around in the storm seemed to have really bad PQ. I am not expert in this stuff and dont know the right terms, bit looked like a lot of blocks and pixels or something like that. The clouds and snow really just looked very poor to me (noone watching with me commented so I guess thats good...)

I had a touch of banding in scenes where fire / smoke met black sky or dark wall (FW 04.10.35). Seemed that Spectrum in my area was getting absolutely hammered so bandwidth was likely limited while watching live on HBOGo.

You are lucky I guess. I want to throw this TV away and buy C9 or Sony cause I hate LG now. I upgraded now to .55 and it is much better ( I checked GOT episode again) but still not enough... For me it wasn't that dark after closing the window.

Before you blame the TV, do an internet search....the whole world was screaming at last night's episode. Whether the show was to dark or artifacts/issues with the picture. It seems that whoever was your broadcast/service provider played a big roll in the quality. But if you want to get a C9 or a Sony that is your prerogative. I would try a 4k blu ray or Netflix before ditching the tv, just to see if it was the broadcast. Anyway, whatever you decide I hope you enjoy and find happiness!!

2018 LG C8-E8 Owners' Thread (No Price Talk)

I think the consensus is almost everyone found the latest episode to be too dark regardless of tv technology, as stated above all most all of this can be attributed to compression artifacts and the mastering . It was not good on dtv but I sort of expected that, will be watching again on hbo go , I expect an improved experience .

I hear there were even people on Good Morning America complaining about the overall darkeness of the episode.

Here’s a good example right here: plasma owner and a q8 qled owner complaining about the same thing :

Before plasmas people were complaining about not enough blacks, contrast ratio and now with OLED we are complaining about too much black. It is a rendered image by movie direction.....not the TV!

04.10.55 is officially available for download on lg germany site. Unfortunately, the problem with black is present, and if you raise the brightness in 5p the initial problem appears. My last lg product ever!!!

I find some of the hysteria here rather comical , I have seen complaints by numerous people with both lcd, plasmas and OLED. Anyone that thinks there is some magic bullet for compression and poor mastering is in for a disappointment imo .

I watched it this afternoon. I need to rewatch this episode when it is totally dark. During daytime I did not notice any flashing, blocking or banding. Provider here in Holland steams in reasonably good quality. Other episodes were good (although not like blu ray quality, but what can you expect).

Never watched a second of game of thrones but from what I've seen on Twitter is no matter what tv u have ie lcd oled whatever I've seen a boatload of people complaining about the quality of that show and that tells me it's the show or cable companies not the panels themselves

I for one am really disappointed in GoT for how this is being presented. Even with compression, panel variability, brand of tv, or whatever it is just plain too dark. This is taking away from the excitement and anticipation of the final season. Hopefully something can be done with the remaining episodes, or better yet, they are all daytime outdoor scenes

I never trust an atom, they make up everything.

I am not really sure from what I am reading if there is a compelling reason for me to update from 15. I never noticed the blocking issue with near blacks that 31 fixed, then again I don't watch GOT (sorry) so maybe the shows I watch just don't have scenes that challenging to render. Also since I feed my sound direct to my amp the audio fix in 55 does not apply to me. 55 restores the posterization feature, but 15 has it too.

So am I missing something? I know I could go to 55 and raise 5% to 5 or 6 as mentioned, but doesn't that just kind of put the curve back where 15 is anyway?

So the most expensive TV show ever made has the worst picture quality ever made?
At least that's what it sounds like from all the complaints.

Usually people are very generous (compared to me) when it comes to evaluating picture quality and all the complaining has made me very curious to check out one such scene.
Can anyone point me to an episode with timestamp where it's especially bad?

I don't plan on watching this season until the Blu-Ray is out, don't want my viewing experience to be ruined by low bitrate.

I love reading the dismay of so many people... the tv had a difficult time with 1 show, out of all the shows in the world, different streaming technologies and formats...but with 1 show, screw this tv?

Oled is a phenomenal technology. You feed it a good source and that picture is going to look so lifelike. Kinda wish hbo had hdr. Cuz I bet this last episode would look so amazing

GOT was dark for sure, but I could see everything clearly on my 77 C8, even the shadows and dark scenes in the crypt and in the hallways. No macroblocking or banding in the clouds. I'm on Cox.
