It does not have less chance of burn-in. But the chances of burn-in on BOTH 2018 and 2019 is very low thanks to the built-in features such as the Screen Shift and Logo Luminance Adjustment.

After some fiddling, I think the issue was Super Resolution was on for normal stuff and when it went into HDR mode for things like Horizon, the settings reset and all the extraneous garbage was on. Thanks for having me check the basic settings again. That helped a lot. I had no idea HDR mode was a seperate inoput mode.

That would be a heck of a test to prove any different.

Question, does the C8 have any sort of on screen display to show the maxfall/maxcll data when using the dynamic tonemapping feature? The Nvidia Shield is supposed to pass this information, but I'm curious if there is a way to confirm it.

Between 2019 and 2018, yes I agree. No idea where the claim came from that 2019 has less burn-in, but I'm glad I'm not the one who has to back up such an outlandish claim

Sadly not - at any time. We can't even get the basic parameters of SDR content like chroma sub-sampling, bit depth and frame-rate! There isn't a TV on the market that displays metadata like that. You'd need a HDFury to check what is coming out of the Nvidia Shield.

The general consensus is the TV will do at least as good a job as the Denon, but it it might be worth trying depending on the source device. The scaling setting is separate for each HDMI input so you can have it scale to 4k/60 on one input, and leave it off for others. I tried using it on my Marantz SR5010 and I thought it scaled my STB a little better than the TV, but the 5010 is limited to 4k/30p so I ended up turning it off.

The only clue to see if metadata is passed correctly without any external extra device is to check the HDR white balance adjustments points.

The second last one is different depending on what metadata the TV receives.
1000 nits metadata: 696
4000 nits metadata: 713

If it shows 696 while playing a 4000 nits mastered movie it means your device is sending incorrect metadata. This has been the case with many nvidia drivers and only recently got fixed.

I will assume that he saw the limited susceptibility to image retention (which is subject to panel variability) in the RTINGS.com C9 review sample, and mistakenly extrapolated this to a likely non-existent improvement in pixel aging and/or related algorithms.

Just got my 77" C8 delivered yesterday and set up today. To say this is the best TV I've ever owned would be the understatement of the century. I still have a 65" B6 that looks great, but this thing blows it away on every level. I don't think I've ever been happier with an electronics purchase.

Yes. I just got a c8 this week (my first OLED) and I'm still not quite sure about how all this works. At first, I thought I would need to use two separate HDMI ports to get things working properly: one for SDR and another for HDR. But it now seems that the c8 automatically switches to the HDR profile when it detects an HDR source.
I am still having some quirks where the Picture type reverts to Standard rather than what I previously selected (e.g. Cinema Home). But I assume I will eventually figure out what's going on.

One small glitch with my new c8. In the lower left corner there is a patch, less than 1 inch square, of what I at first thought was dead pixels. But it's actually much more subtle than that.

I obviously can't see it at all when the screen itself is black or almost black in that area. The big surprise is that it also vanishes when the screen in that area is a bright color (e.g. white or yellow etc.). It seems that there are just a few shades (mainly in the mid-gray range) where the blotch is apparent (it remains black when the surrounding area is gray). The result is that about 80% of the time I don't even see the defect. But it's still a bit irritating.

Have others seen anything like this? Do you have ideas about what's going on and what, if anything, I can do about? Thanks.

I'm a proud new owner of a C8 and of my first OLED!

I'm new to all of this and I was hoping for some test patterns to throw up onto the screen to make sure there aren't any serious issues while I am still within my return window. Can someone supply me with a link to a suite of patterns? I found a super old thread from 2007 on here that requires me to burn a bluray, but I'm not sure if that is still relevant to use. I also don't have a bluray burner so I was just hoping for some images to put onto a usb drive. I want to be sure it doesn't have any serious banding or uniformity issues. I would also like to tweak some some settings to make sure my TV isn't crushing too much black and things like that until I can get it professionally calibrated.

You can get test patterns from here by searching, there are plenty and you can just save to a flash drive. Youtube has some you can use.

Unless you see anything really weird or out of the ordinary, you really should wait till you have about 200 hours or so of use. The tv needs time to settle in.

Also read the pinned FAQ at the beginng of the thread. Most of of your questions can be answered there

I have searched and there are so many that it is a bit overwhelming and not really sure which to use and most are mp4s or ts files. Many are really old and I am not sure if they are still valid. Can you point me to one that you happen to use?

I was definitely going to wait until 200 hours for most tuning, but as you said, I am just looking for something really out of the ordinary at this point.

Thank you for mentioning those 2 Youtube videos. I have actually seen those exact 2 videos. They kind of got me wondering about black crush actually.

I have God of War and a PS4 Pro and I can go to the exact scene he uses in his video and my picture does not look even remotely like his. I can see all the detail in the beard. If using that as a "test" is any indication, then I don't have any black crush whatsoever. But is that even possible with all the issues others are having?

Yep, but its kind of hidden! Long press settings for the full settings menu, select energy saving then select screen off!

This might be a nice addition to the FAQ...
I use “tv screen off” via voice command multiple times a day and it works perfectly. One of the greatest features I utilize on this beauty. 🙂

I have a similar issue. It only appears when i raise brightness up to make black non black or raise 2 point low end luminance up on the rgb by a few points, in an effort to correct crush. My patch is small kinda L shaped. I thought it was a source issue but its the panel. I assume its a voltage issue on those pixels. Its seems very similar to the issue i have where the right side of my screen is bright grey and not black when raising brightness and the left remains black. Id take a picture but theres too much light in my room atm.

I use ones that are on calibration discs. Such as spears and munsil. You could always buy a Blu-ray disc off Amazon or somewhere.

Since you don't have a Blu-ray burner, just search youtube through the TV's YouTube app & look for calibration videos.

Again besides your standard color, brightness, contrasts settings, you don't get a good idea if there are issues with your panel until it has its break-in period. What you might see now may be gone after some hours of use.

My best advice is set your basic ssttings to what you like (color, contrast, brightness and such) and if you don't see anything out of the ordinary while viewing content then don't worry. If something is wrong or seems off, just post here and someone will reply and give some info.

As for the test patterns you found in the search, most are fine even if they are 2007. Nothing has really changed with the basic patterns.

Great. Thank you. Many of those test patterns were 1920x1080 so I wasn't sure if I needed 4k patterns.

Let the tv do it. When was the last time you saw a denon tv? Would you trust your tv to do audio conversions? Just my 2 cents

I apologize in advance for another new owner question. But here goes:

I just checked the firmware number for my new LG C8. It says it is 04.10.15.
I know that 04.10.55 is the latest version.

My TV is connected to the Internet via Wi-Fi. However, when I select for the TV to search for the latest update, it comes back and says that no newer update is available.

What's up? I assume I can do a manual update. But I'd like to understand why the online update doesn't work.

Thanks.
