Agreed.

Quote:
4:4:4 chroma is not possible to send over HDMI 2.0 when doing 60Hz 4K HDR. There isn't enough bandwidth. Besides the content (at least if a movie) is already 4:2:2 or 4:2:0 so you might as well send that and let the TV expand it rather than having the player expand it (and exceed the HDMI bandwidth which would require dropping framerate, HDR or resolution).

The only time 4:4:4 is needed is for colored text to be clear, so for a PC desktop or web browsing and similar, but in those cases you probably don't need HDR, so you should be OK with 4k 60Hz non HDR with 4:4:4 in that case. Hence that is what PC mode uses as far as I understand it.
See my sig. 4K60 4:4:4 and RGB are both possible within the bandwidth of HDM2.0, but only at 8bit. You have to set the C8 to "PC mode" for it to display corrected. HDR isn't supported officially in this mode, but may well work - if it does, you'd get horrible banding because it's only 8bit.

Some of the modes aren't supported by HDMI2.0 - eg 4:2:0 at any bit-depth at 24/25/30Hz. This means you have no choice but to allow/ask the player to do some of the work. It's not possible to send the disc's original 4:2:0 10bit over the cable. This allows 4K blu-ray players to compete and offer different quality picture outputs, based on how well they can upsample the chroma from 4:2:0.

Until recently the Oppo 203 player was the best at doing this, but it has been overtaken now by the chipset in the Panasonic ub9000 / ub820 players.

I'm not sure how much Atmos you'll get listening through the LG, but my belief is you need to tell the Xbox to decode it. You may want to browse the Xbox forum to see if there is more information.

My player, an X800M2, does have an auto option. I've had it on 4:2:2 for awhile now.

Roger that. I had heard that not all HDMI-out on all laptops render the test patterns acceptably so I was hoping to avoid that possible wrinkle. But, alas, this is probably a discussion for the calibration sub-forum. So I'll head over there to seek more info/clarification when I'm ready to buy LG Home Calibration bundle. Thanks for the reply.

Another questions. After updating firmware should you reset your picture settings? Do you actually need to?

I just looked on mine. I hadn't noticed it before and it looks completely normal to me. But if I were to be in an obsessive mood and got it in my head that it could be the edge of a peel-able layer, I could see where you'd think that. So, no, I don't think you left anything on the screen. And I think you'd know if you did (there would be *some* bubbling, etc.).

I have all of the settings that I use outside of defaults documented on my laptop and a hard copy printout. That way, if and when I do an update, I can easily scroll thru the settings to see if anything was changed by the update. If not, then I make any adjustments that I think are necessary and still have a "reference" copy pre-update to go back to. Should you reset your picture settings? I don't that would be necessary unless something doesn't look right.

I never trust an atom, they make up everything.

It does come packaged with a protective film, if you didn't remove it when you first got it, it should come away easily. Be warned though, pics have circulated of a guy that thought he was removing a secondary protective layer but it turned out he was trying to peel the actual screen off!

I can't recall how the protective film was when I got mine, but didn't it have some obvious "pull tabs" or other markings?

My father's 65C8 still had the plastic on the back when I visited and began rewiring his stuff. But even he knew to take the film off the screen (or did he!?!).

Answering my own question. . . yes, there appears to be a red sticker on the protective film. Making it pretty hard to miss.

I don't think mine had any markings (C8), and I can't remember how obvious is was, but looking at that photo it looks like it might still be in place:

It also appears that the yellow power usage sticker is below the protective film. So if you don't have the yellow sticker on there anymore, you also don't have the protective film on there anymore.

I couldn't tell you either. I was never able to access 05.20.02 which was frustrating because .00 disabled the Google Assistant. Now with 05.20.03, the Google Assistant is working again. That's a plus in my book.

Correct o mundo. Except @Jrocker23 posted that the Google Assistant issue was actually fixed with 05.20.02. And that has now carried over with 05.20.03 by my own experience. Others have posted a few pages back that 05.10.00 also broke the Google Assistant but I have not seen anyone say it was fixed with 05.10.02. However it probably was there as well. I have seen nothing detrimental to my settings or post pro-calibration PQ with 05.20.03 so far.

I installed 5.10.13 (I think that is the one, I am at work right now and can't see it) a few days ago and I haven't really noticed a change in my set -- for better or worse. Awhile back I had posted that I had to change my brightness to 49 on Dolby Vision content otherwise my Black Bars were not pure black and that is still the case with 5.10.13.

Correct. There are also 3 sheets on the BACK of the TV you need to remove and they have NO red sticker to indicate them. Mine were on there for months before I found out about them.

I wish there was less discussion here about firmware updates and settings, or that these topics were moved to the calibration thread.

I think I will go for a C865 as soon as I can......seems like an easy decision.
Just watch it as those are discontinued and will eventually dry up.........Then you will have to buy a 65C9

What should we discuss about?
Fw updates and settings for C8 are still specific to C8.

@mrtickleuk ,

Just re-read your FW list post and I think there is an error.

It was 05.10.02, NOT 05.20.02, that was made available Tues 02 July 2019 for public OTA download from the Korean site via thumb drive upload to the C8.

By OTA I specifically mean the TV updating itself via the internet without any use of the Engineering menu or USB.

But yes, thanks for the correction.

https://www.avforums.com/threads/lg-...#post-27222912 - IanS definitely says 5.10.02

I make this 13 firmware versions so far this year - no-one can say LG aren't trying to fix this!

4.20.05 E
4.10.31
4.50.01 E
4.60.01 E
4.10.50
4.10.55
5.10.00 E
5.20.00 E
5.10.02
5.20.02 E
5.10.03 E
5.20.03 E

E = Engineering only.
