Have you turned on the enhanced HDMI port features on your A1E? I think these are only available on two of the HDMI inputs (input 3 is one of them...not sure of the other one...it might be input 2).

If you need settings help on your PS4...I am not your guy...I game on that "other console".

Since Sony doesn’t allow you to downgrade the firmware why not replace the main board?

It should be relatively straight forward to do since the main board is located in the “kickstand”

Part #:
1-982-022-11
What version of firmware would that board come with? I doubt there is any way you would know.

And the part number you listed appears to be for the X900E certainly not an A1E. It doesn't even have the same chipset.

That’s true, there is no way to know what firmware is on the replacement part, but it’s unlikely to be the current version. I see several listings on eBay where the part is pulled from a new tv that has been damaged during shipment.

You’re right I fixed the part number on my original post:
A-2181-897-A

https://sony.encompass.com/item/1104...mpl_Svc_Bka_Uc

It doesn’t look like Sony is going to fix this issue anytime soon (or maybe ever) this thread is more than two months old. Also correct me if I’m wrong, but even the A8F has this “feature” implemented. So this is kind of a last ditch effort for those that want to restore their A1E to its former glory.

We have no idea when an update is coming. Maybe they are testing it right now and it will be released tomorrow, or it could be in 3 months or a year. No idea of course. At least they seem to have admitted the feature has a problem.

Let us hope that there is a glimmer of positivity in that the engineers are fine tuning the Firmware. If this is so and there is a resolution to the issue, Sony are recieving a great deal of justifiable negative publicity due to their shambolic handling of the whole affair.

It is now 3 months since the defect appeared (UK) after PKG6.2858, Sony Support for their flagship model can only be classed at a level that would have been an embarrasment to PoundShop.

I wonder if we can put EU firmware on NA TV's using USB? Once its actually released that is. I saw this effect BAD on a soccer game a few days ago.

I gave up! After months of complaining, Sony would not replace my A1E, so I decided to call Best Buy and explain the situation. I bought my A1E in January and even though it had been six months, Best Buy agreed to take it back for a full store credit. With my credit, instead of replacing with another A1E or A8F, I decided to get the Samsung Q8F FALD QLED. I admit that I am sacrificing PQ by staying away from OLED, but the Q8F has been a much more enjoyable experience than the A1E was. I can't say that I'll never buy a Sony again, but it would take A LOT for me to do it again after the extremely poor A1E experience. Personally, I'm glad it's no longer an issue for me.

How come q8 and not q9 if you are coming from an a1e?

IIRC Sony Europe put the FW up that had "Resolves an issue where the brightness decreases every time HDR content is played" in late May, and shut it down on 6/21. So there musta been an issue with their staggered rollout so they had to stop. Good news is that little note, the bad news is the wait.

Hopefully, the A1E gets it soon, and it is in included in the second A8F FW update.

I already updated to v6.5603 through USB before that firmware was pulled, it did not solve the dimming issue.

This sudden removal/delay of this update seems strange to me.
Will they just make v6.5603 available again someday unchanged? or will a new version come out?

I do know now that i will never firmware update a TV again after this dimming issue is fixed, before being absolutely sure from other users that nothing is wrong.
Being stuck with this problem for months now without an option to roll back to previous firmware has taught me that lesson at least.

The "Oreo" update sort of bricked my Shield TV yesterday. Had to plug it in to wired ethernet to get around an infinite loop of "we can't check for further updates make sure your wifi works" after it updated.

The nutty thing is, to my eyes, DV is only a very marginal increase in PQ on the A1E. I tested Netflix by going from onboard (DV) to a Shield TV (HDR10). But, on my old TV (Vizio M-sries) its a night and day difference.

I've starting playing PC games on the A1E again - does the dimming only happen on Medium/High Peak Luminance with HDR enabled games? What about with BFI on?

What game would be best to test this with?

I've done no gaming on my TV (PC master race!) but insofar as I can tell no settings matter. Its all about having a static, bright image on screen, like a HUD, or scoreboard. I had some HDR soccer on and while they were showing the pregame warmups and national anthems everything was just fine. Once they put the scoreboard up within 2 minutes BAM ABL takes effect. I tried messing with most settings, but I'm not sure I turned on BFI though.

FINALLY PROBLEM SOLVED. Sony switched my motherboard with the October 2017 version - PKG6.2669.0070 and guess what?
The image does not darken any more, thanks to Sony Brazil.
Do the same thing, because we have no guarantee of what will come in future firmwares, it is the only solution.
