Same here. After the update the picture, especially SDR HD appears brighter. Could just be my imagination I suppose. I am constantly amazed by how good the A8F handles near black material in HD up conversion.

Interesting how people seem to be reporting an overall brighter panel too. I figured they would just make the dimming less aggressive.

Someone must measure the peak highlights now after this update because maybe Sony after reading almost a year now that LG's with the same panel are brighter, maybe they raised it a bit.

Latest firmware does seem slightly brighter to me. Android TV running much smoother now. It is now possible to make picture adjustments with DV or HDR 4K running on the internal netflix or video app without lag. Before it would lag and stutter.

I just wanted to check... did you mean Apple 4KTV box and not DirecTV Now? I don't think DTVN supports HDR at all does it?

I wouldn't think SDR gamma would have been adjusted in an update because it was already fine.

My only real issue with the Sony was that DV content specifically looked dim from the A4K box. If they fixed that, great!

Yes, the DirecTV Now app on the ATV4K - so I'm assuming all DV content displayed through ATV4K. You're correct, DTVN doesn't do any HDR, but the TV is locked in Dolby Vision when using ATV4K.

Before, I had the gamma at +2 and brightness at max for DTVNow content on ATV4k; now I have gamma at 0 and brightness at 43... whites are searing.

The Android menu seems faster, too. Scrolling movies in the Amazon App is quicker. Boot-up is faster, the TV menu is immediately responsive after turning on instead of having to wait 20 sec.

Much brighter ATV4K Dolby Vision, great update!

Is this by choice for some reason or are you unaware of the match Dynamic Range option on the A4K?

This is important because running SDR and HDR10 content while forcing Dolby Vision color space will cause incorrect mapping. It will also cause blindness (eventually--insert Trump staring into the solar eclipse photo), increased power consumption, and will lead to pixel burn-in faster (more like burn-out).

In short, you should have your AppleTV4K in “4K SDR” mode with both Match options set to on. DV or HDR programs will be sent as such as will SDR.

I updated to latest firmware via USB last night (OTA didn’t show as available on the TV - I am in the U.S.).

It was late so I didn’t get to test it too much, I will check it out tonight when I get home. Will also update my ATV4k to latest OS and see if that has any impact on the dark DV.

I updated last night by downloading and updating with USB. I don't use Netfix or Apple TV, I only watch cable TV, UHD or blu-ray with OPPO. There is not much noticable difference before and after for both SDR and HDR materials.

I noticed some members experienced brighter screen but I felt the otherway round. Seems strange but yet to test with DV materials cos' I have sold my OPPO-203 and waiting for the delivery of Pioneer UDP-lx500.

So can anyone confirm for sure that the latest software upgrade fixes the dimming issue. I am planning on getting one of these to replace my faulty LG E8P and watch a lot of football and hockey. If the A8F no longer dims the picture like it used to for hockey games that would be great. If it still does, then I may not be looking at moving to one of these. Can anyone confirm if it does? Does the A1E do the same?

The dimming has improved significantly and the ABL is much less aggressive to a point where it is much harder to spot. Overall myself and a few other owners are happy with the update.

Just get my Pionner UDP-LX500 blu-ray player yesterday and tried some DV UHD disc. DV on A8F is a little bit brighter than before but I suspect it is the new player that makes the difference. The first few chapters of Black Panther is not as dark (without detail) as with OPPO-203.

Got the notification for the fw update last night and updated. Haven't had a chance to try it yet though.

But read many postive insights on the dimming. Seem A1/AF8 and AF9 now behave correct (more like LG)

TV still aggressively dims *ABL* very easy to test in cartoons i can toggle but bringing up mini display guide see brightness fluctuate just like before and even watching youtube review videos after min so you can see it with a good eye you can see slight variance in colors especially skin tones when dims. It does seem slightly brighter though in SDR haven't tested HDR yet this makes colors pop more. And possible they dimming under certain scenario like bringing up android TV menu. We need someone with proper equipment to retest but looks like they did improve some it.

I cannot replicate anything in the above post. You will need to provide a lot more details if you would like to me to check since I actually have “proper equipment”.

So does this tv still dim or not? About to purchase one but if it still dims I may reconsider. Have been having major issues with my LG OLED and no longer want to purchase a LG product.

Or is it safe to buy an A8F and just not do any of the software upgrades until it is known for sure if this has been resolved?

It does not not any more aggressively than the LGs post firmware update.

No the A9f has the easel stand like the A1E but my understanding is build quality is similar to the A8F.

Used an X-Rite X1 Pro to adjust the calibration on my A8F. D-Nice's settings posted earlier with the greyscale 10 point was under delta E = 2.0 which is great.

Here is the result of my grey scale once I tweaked it a bit more - dark room SDR cal. Can still smooth it out a bit more; it is fun to tweak.

Good to know. Using D-nice basic settings also but haven't tried all deeper color settings. Some stuff is usually ok to change for everyone but many say you shouldn't try others expert settings done from calibration and that they can do more bad than good for PQ but I don't know.

I tried that with my 900E and loved the results. Try it and if it looks odd just get rid of it but be sure to report back here on your results.
