This is for a general use family living room where 90% of the viewing will be cable run through Tivo and/or OTA antenna, so I decided to not drive myself crazy with reference discs, slides, etc., and instead will get it set up to the best of my abilities solely using online suggestions and my own eyes. I didn't fuss with the video settings last night (other than to change it from Vivid to Standard) as I plan on updating to the A1E Oreo firmware tonight guided by RafCave's youtube video.

Initial impressions are great. The 4K material I watched through Netflix was stunning and I knew not to expect miracles with the 1080i and below material from Tivo and OTA. Coming from a Kuro plasma, I was worried, but I don't think it will be a big deal because I knew going in that the OLED wasn't going to be light years ahead of the plasma on lower res material. I admit that I am consciously trying to NOT find anything wrong with this TV, as I cannot imagine how I would go about dismounting it, boxing it and returning it. . .

A couple of questions:

1 - is there a post or video that provides useful tips for the Google stuff? I know I read somewhere that you should disable auto updates and eliminate unnecessary apps, but I'm not sure how to do that. Is that even still necessary after updating to Oreo? Last night (pre-Oreo), the onboard Netflix was choppy, froze once and kicked me off twice. The onboard apps are my only access to 4K/UHD content, so I really want to use those for the 10% of the viewing that isn't cable.

2 - I am using the Sony's internal sound and can already tell that it will be fine for our viewing habits. I did, however, hook a subwoofer through the headphone port as some other posters suggested. It works like a charm, but it's too much bass. Every nob on my old Paradigm DSP-3100 sub is turned to its lowest setting, but it is still kicking on and rumbling too much. Is there a bass setting on the TV that I can turn down to help this? I didn't really look around last night as I wanted to wait until after the Oreo update.

That's all for now. Can't wait to get home tonight, update to Oreo and play.

New Owner A8F 65" AU

Hi Guys. I grabbed a 65" AF8 during he Australian Boxing Day Sales which got delivered yesterday. Im happy my previous SU-WL450 actually works with his new TV! unfortunately I cannot get the SWFBR100B to work at all.... the dongle when plugged in flashes orange for a second and then nothing more. so I can even get it into pairing mode. All TV settings are matched. And if I connect everything back to the old W800B it works flawlessly agin. Any Ideas?

Pro Calibration is booked in for 5th of FEB

Congrats on the purchase , the wireless sub may not be compatible unfortunately . Pretty typical for Sony In my experience with Sony soundbars.

Can someone tell me, has the aggressive dimming issue been corrected on the A8F? Thank you.

There was an adjustment to the algorithm to make it less aggressive in a recent software upgrade but it is still present , I personally have never been impacted by it . Depends on your usage pattern and how hard you push the set .

As I am now a bit lost. I do not want a soundbar setup. but just to run a hidden sub for my minimalist looking setup. any recommendations of a powered sub that can connect directly to the aux jack?

I'm not all that familar with your system but the dongle may not be getting enough power via the tv USB.
Assuming the dongle has 3.5mm that plugs into the tv, could you power the dongle via another power source.

Where can I find this information on the a8f?
The counter in Settings > About > Up time did reset a couple of times on mine.

Are you looking for the panel
Hours ? If so you will need to get into the service menu.

I think the Up time reported in Settings -> About is total elapsed from the last reboot; I rebooted mine last evening and this morning it was reading 13 hours and the middle Self Check screen counter went up by one.

I had no problem using my PSB subseries 1 with the A1E. Just plugged in a stereo 1/8" to dual RCA jacks cable and all good.

What ever happened with the A8F receiving the Oreo Update, are we not going to get it?? This is a quote from the sony community forum on December 29,2018:

Welcome and thank you for considering Sony Community!

As of the moment, there are no updates for the A8F series. We highly suggest visiting our support website from time-to-time. Once an update is available for your TV, it will be posted right away on the support website linked below:

https://www.sony.com/electronics/sup...oid-/xbr-65a8f

I am assuming you void the warranty if you update the A8 firmware with the A1 firmware.

I am assuming you void the warranty if you update the A8 firmware with the A1 firmware.
According to this article in Flatpanelshd.com by Rasmus Larsen, Spring 2018 Sony TV’s will get the update. I saw a rumor, I forget where, that Sony delayed the firmware to fix a bug concerning ARC and CEC interaction. Here is the quote from the article:

“...
The first TVs to receive the Oreo update in the US are late 2016 Sony Android TVs (Z9D, X800D, X750D, X700D) and 2017 Sony Android TVs (the XE series). Sony has not said when spring 2018 models will receive Oreo but has confirmed that it is coming. Late 2018 models come with Android Oreo pre-installed.“

Even the 2016/2017 update is not yet pushed out to auto update, it is download to USB only. This leads me to suspect a delay to fix a bug.

As to the warranty I have no idea.

Any word of Sony supporting AirPlay 2 or HomeKit integration? Would really love HomeKit integration in particular, especially on such a high end set.

I'm going to be very unhappy if it doesn't. There are Vizios from 2017 getting an update for airplay 2, and homekit.

Word from CES is that all high end (all OLEDs and I guess some LCDs) 2019 Sony TVs will support Airplay2 and HomeKit. No word on if previous year models will get it. But it’s not official until the full specs are released.

Question Manufacturing Date?

Is there a way to tell what batch (week or month or so) the TV was assembled?
Similar q for the panel?

Sony A8F vs Sony X900F 4K LED vs eye care

Due to some eye issues I would like to hear from the owners of A8F and possibly owners of LED TV like my Sony X900F.
1 Do you find your eyes get more/or less irritated watching OLED TV
2 I am also a big gamer, do you worry about burn in?
3 Motion on the X900F (I owe now) is excellent, how is motion on your OLED
4 Brightness for HDR on my X900F is glaring (at least to me) is the HDR on your OLED darker and more suitable for darker room?
5 Can you disable or minimize the dimming feature? Does you see it in games?
6 Do you find the picture quality is far superior to X900F LED?
7 Thanks for any feedback you can give me

1.No eye issues with my A8F
2 dont play Games but watch all aspect ratios on movies and have no worries
3 I own a 900E and A8f and motion is better on A8F
4 I have a dark room with no windows and find peak luminance at low is best setting
5 Do dimming feature using low luminance
6 Picture quality is darker and colors and contrast pop more on A8F than 900E

Thanks for your reply. Looks like you really love your OLED over the 900E. At any rate I love my X900F as well however now my concern is the LED blue light and flicker from PWM dimming that is why I am considering the OLED TV.
1 I also would like to hear from people in regards to input lag in games
2 Can you transport this TV (55”) flat in a hatchback? I live few blocks from Costco, and if it’s OK is it face down or up?
Thanks again for any reply

In my case I did it face up in my hatchback and, althoug the best position shoud be vertical, everything was ok. Just be careful on not adding more stuff over the box and try to drive carefully. I was 30 kms away from home and got no issues.

1 I also would like to hear from people in regards to input lag in games
2 Can you transport this TV (55”) flat in a hatchback? I live few blocks from Costco, and if it’s OK is it face down or up?
Thanks again for any reply

Curious how you are getting one of these at Costco, did you mean Best Buy? Only Sony carried at Costco is a derivative of lower LCD. Anyway, drive carefully and avoid potholes, the display will be fine.

There is no perfect display, quit looking for faults and enjoy

LG OLED 77" C9, 65” B7a and 55” C8
Ascend's with RAAL, Outlaw monoblocks, PSA v1800 and a 7.2.4 speaker config, Oppo 203 and other stuff
