You can see these two curves in Vincent Teoh's review here:
http://www.hdtvtest.co.uk/news/oled5...1705074461.htm

The curve used metadata max luminance of 1000 nits

The curve used metadata max luminance of 4000 nits

Attached is an image of Batman V Superman: Left Sony, Middle LG, Right Panasonic.
The LG is the darkest because it darkens the image below 100 nits.

LG's Active HDR mitigates the problem by dynamically analyzing scenes and restore PQ EOTF tracking and it helps a lot.

If you have a Sony/Columbia UHD BD you can access test patterns my typing 7669 at the menu.
These patterns have static metadata of 10000 nits which is even more aggressive. The 100 nit bar pattern is clearly dark and nothing close the 100 nits because there is a ramp on the bottom that includes 10000 nits. In this case, the LG appears to fall-back to the aggressive tone-mapping and Active HDR does not change that.

Sony ignores the static metadata when dynamic tone-mapping (as it should). Static metadata is not consistent from title to title and there is no argument for two disks with the same scene displayed at different average picture level because they have different static metadata with dynamic tone-mapping engaged.

- Rich
the question is, is it known so far whether the 2018 lg oleds c8/e8 are employing the same method of tone mapping as the 2017 ones, or are they tracking any differently? sony's method is the correct one, they ignore the content metadata and employ their own mapping, you dont need to adjust WB between sdr and hdr content, you can keep the same WB that you set for sdr and sony maps it correctly for hdr.

Generally yes but also think about bezel color too which is why the C7 usually is preferred over the B7, aside from that if you can get a big savings it doesn't matter as they are really the same aside from internal audio.

I had to cover the top bezel with black tape because was annoying in dark room.

I'm going to get C7 because of the black bezel and the stand (much smaller footprint). I'm going to be using the TV for years so I'm okay with the relatively high price increase.

given the statement years, I do suggest giving a hard look at the C8.

Yes I thought about it but the price difference is about 2200€ (2600 USD) at the moment and that is simply way more than I'm comfortable paying.

If outside the US, I am guessing pricing is less competitive?

Here the price difference is much closer so if you are seeing a $2600 difference then the C7 is the answer.

C7 65" $2400~
C8 65" $2900~

Where? Most retailers list the 65 C8 for 3,500.

Like BB, Yes they want full MSRP, forum sponsors like CP and other outlets that are listed in the deal threads offer it for $2800~

I paid $2890 with no tax from one of those places.

Damn, thats a good deal. But the thing is I have 2k store credit at BB. My B6 developed some Burn in and the BB insurance covered me. Thats one of the things I like about BB is that they cover BI. But I don't like their pricing very much.

Guess there's the C7 65" for $2600, so that's one option and for another $900 there's the second which is the C8 and then minus your BI credit from BB which is a great deal

Just bought the '65 C7 and I will say the overall picture looks brighter than my B6 but while viewing some HDR on Netflix it looks as if doesn't pop as much as my 6 did.

I would let a few comp cycles pass for one and for two make sure you have optimized the settings etc.

I have a $600 gift card at Best Buy and plan to put that towards an OLED in the not-to-distant future, but I was wondering if anyone had any good predictions about some expected memorial day and/or fathers day sales.

I am really really really hoping that the 55" B7A models get down to around $1000.

Thoughts?

Blurays: 115
HD-DVD: 12- YES I will be keeping them so I can own a piece of history

These deals can be found in the laste page of following threads:
https://www.avsforum.com/forum/322-ol...d-c8-c7-2.html
https://www.avsforum.com/forum/322-ol...-w-series.html

It's a little hard to find, since they are mixed in with the 2017 deals. Eventually, we will have a 2018 LG OLEDs dedicated thread.

Don't go by the retail price. With a little haggling, the street prices are lower.

It's on a daily eBay deal today for $1350

https://www.ebay.com/itm/LG-OLED55B7...MAAOSwjzJa0NMZ

predictions are hard to say, but usually they are for current lineups and these would be closeouts.

BB has it at $1499 - 600 puts your cost at $900

My thoughts, if you like to game...watch CNN...Fox...things that have stationary pieces of imagery, go with the C8 for sure. Otherwise the 2017's can be had at good prices.
