You do realize Apple offers over 200 movie in Dolby Vision. Also there’s a lot of HDR content on Netflix, Amazon and Vudu. Sounds like you’re not a gamer but almost every video game today released has HDR support.
Maybe I misinterpreted what you wrote but

HDR mastering has matured and there’s a lot of content that supports it. I do appreciate your impressions on the A9F. I’m holding out for CES and then I will decide to either go for the A9 or wait for a 2019 model.

Thank you, I totally hear you, Helvetica! I very specifically made sure my return period at Best Buy was several weeks after CES, I too want to hear what 's new at CES. The HDR content on Netflix I find limited to new series, some of which i'm into but not most. I have been buying my movies on Amazon Prime- darn it, they won't upgrade my many prior purchases to UHD, I'd have to buy them again. I didn't realize Apple had so many Dolby Vision, I'd rather stay with amazon but I'd consider Apple again. HOWEVER can the Apple TV pass Dolby Vision to the Sony? The Fire TV doesn't seem to, it looks like I can only get DV through the native Sony app. Does Any one know if an external box can pass DV?

Yes, Apple TV 4K will pass Dolby Vision to Sony TVs.

Ok thanks, that's great! I have 2 Apple TVS but neither are 4K. Can a Fire TV pass DV? Maybe I'm missing a setting somewhere?

BTW, probably a lot of us are waiting for the news at CES 2019, and everyone has probably read about the 8K Samsung QLED and how terrific its upscaling is. The only model available in the US is 85", though there are already 65" and 75" selling in Europe. I had a chance to play with the 85" for a bit in the local BB. Yep. the 8K content is spectacular- however, I watched several different 1080p Blu Rays, and to my eyes at least, they did not look as good on the 8K as on the A9F. Of course I was comparing the 85" 8K to the 65" Sony, so YMMV. But it was a disappointment- from the reviews of the Samsung, I was expecting much better. Also I didn't have a chance to play much with the TV's settings. In any case, I walked out and felt better about my A9F purchase, compared to a potential Samsung.

2018 Sony A9F Master Series OLED Owner's Thread

I can wait at least another 5yrs for 8K. I’m really interested in any advancements or changes to LG OLED panels. There are rumors of LG moving to top emission which will increase brightness (a little) and potentially mitigate burn in.

But I really want the A9F! It’s only a matter of weeks until we find what’s in store for 2019.

Thank you for your help! It looks online like a lot of folks are having problems with the Amazon Prime app on Android TVs, so it's not just my TV.

Yep. It's not the 8K that's the big advance but the AI chip they're using to upscale. But it didn't look like a big improvement to me. Of course if LG starts making top emission panels, presumably they'll be used in next years A9F. I'm liking my set more and more asI tinker with the settings. It's not a huge deal to me to not have a workable onboard Amazon Prime App since I can easily use the new Firestick.

In 2008 extended warranty companies got regulated by our government, they can no longer just go out of business as each warranty has a separate insurance policy. In other words, 2 companies have to fail to not have coverage.

If you do, I for one would be interested in how you find the sets compare? Z9Dwas my number 2 choice.

Sony A9F Motion Settings

Hello, I've had my A9F for about a week now and i'm curious what motion settings you are using? I have kept everything on "Auto" but i'm still getting a decent amount of motion judder, specifically on 4K content via Netflix. Any suggestions?

I have not done the firmware update yet. I know they don't always include all the changes made in the change log so I'm curious if it had any effect on DV's performance. I'm not sure if I could tell by eye.

So what are you going to do? Keep the A9F or get the Z9D? Are you liking the A9F any more now or still not thrilled with SDR?

It sounds like you're having the same motion problems on the native Netflix and Amazon Prime apps I had. I tried every setting and couldn't get rid of the judder. Watching Netflix in 4K on an Amazon TV there's essentially no problem. When I Googled it, it appears that it's a common problem on android TVs, not just Sony Oleds. For me external streaming media boxes are the answer.

Aside from the native app problem, I keep all motion processing turned off on all film and tv shows, and that is more or less fine. Not quite plasma but close enough, I think. Sports I can't say. I've only had the set for 4 days though, so YMMV.

well, it doesn't seem to be an issue. I see the notice for a few seconds than it's gone, and the set seems to be online the whole time. worse stuff happens, certainly.

I assumed the apps were just poorly written for the Sony, which would seem odd.

The apps are not written for Sony. They are androidTV apps and used on many TVs. They seem to be working correctly for almost everyone. Is your network connection bad perhaps? Seems odd that it would be bad. Also remember the motion settings for apps is separate from the motion settings on each HDMI input, so you would need to change them while watching something to affect that particular input. I believe all apps share one setting though, so you only have to adjust it once for all built in apps.

Intermitently powering off

Hello, has anyone had issues where the TV will intermittently turn off? I've disabled all of the power related options (I think). This seems to only occur when watching Xfinity from the STB.

For me, it was an annoyance as it will pop up while you're in the midst of watching something, and because it simply shouldn't be doing that in the first place.

I had the same issue (have a wired network connection to the TV). More annoying than anything else... I turned: Network, "Remote Start On" which made it go away. Likely uses more energy..... SJ

I just got the firmware update to version 6.0530 over the internet just a little while ago. Only had about 15 or 20 minutes so I haven't noticed any obvious changes. Anybody else notice anything different?

I spent a significant amount of time yesterday running the A9F side-by-side with my 940C. Yes, the color is better on the A9F. Yes, it has improved contrast, but with the caveat of what almost seems like black crush after seeing the image on the 940C too. No matter what I do I simply can't get the A9F to stop obscuring detail in dark areas while playing back HDR content without raising the black level. The brightness on the 940C nearly required sunglasses after using the A9F exclusively for a few days. The 10" size increase is a very tangible improvement. It does soften the image a tad, but the overall cinematic experience is improved.

The net positive of the A9F is simply not enough to justify the expense. A9F is set to go back. After trying the 85X900F and now the 65A9F I am now forced to admit my initial $8K investment 3 years ago was better than I expected. Looks like I am going to hold off another year for an upgrade...
