2018 Sony A9F Master Series OLED Owner's Thread

Since several of us are ordering A9F's and the announcement thread for the Master Series is more about the Z9F, I think it is time for the traditional Owner's Thread for Sony's flagship OLED. As usual, no price talk (including whining about the MSRP) - just technical discussions and impressions about the A9F. We'll allow non-owner questions to owners as long as it doesn't end up being a debate about "product X vs the A9F".

Have fun!

Mine is arriving this Saturday, anyone getting it sooner? I'll probably post pics and first impressions on Sunday.

Great! Looking forward to some owner feedback.

I’m having VE calibrate mine first so it will be towards the end of the month before I see mine (out of town until then anyway).

Placing the order for mine later this week, I'm just waiting for my MagHiFi sales rep to return to work.

just received my 65 A9F. BB had no clue how to install the kick stand. they told me i needed to hook up all my connections first, i was like, I don't think so. anyway they did manage to finally get it on. One guy was resting his hands, looked like he was pressing down on the back of the screen while the other was putting on the kick stand. i had to tell that idiot not to rest his hands on my TV like that. Anyway too soon for me to say if I love it or hate it. messing with settings. one thing i noticed is that all screen settings are greyed out (wide mode, auto wide, 4:3 default, auto display area display area and screen position) i just wanted to make sure display area was set to full pixel, right low it appears to be locked on normal. ill look for banding tonight when it's dark out.

The display settings will be grayed out if receiving a 4k signal thus always full pixel

khollister 09-08-2018 10:16 AM

What picture mode are you on?

Hard to believe you would hate it even OTB.

Looking forward to hearing your first impressions of the A9F. Have mine pre-ordered and am anxiously awaiting some early reviews.

You must be the reason that they are late to deliver mine! :D Seriously, they just called to tell me that they will be missing my delivery window by 90 minutes. They installed it for you? I wasn't expecting that.

They actually asked me who was installing it for me and I told them they were. They said they don’t normally, I told them sure you do. They did it. Free delivery includes placing the TV where u want it, in my case it was on my stand. So they had to install the kick stand and place it on my furniture

Here is a pic I just took. Amazon Prime Jack Ryan playing. don't mind all the ethernet cables, at some point I will run them on ceiling.

jrref 09-08-2018 12:53 PM

Go to CNN and let us know if you see any green or red tinting in the bottom of the screen where they have the news real running or if you watch anything that has a full white screen, let us know the same.

CONGRATS! – is that the 65 inch? Do you have a Xbox or PS4? Would like to hear gaming response. Also how does Dolby Vision look. We need answers! ;)

I am sitting on pins and needles waiting for the ultimate test.

The 5% slide.

i had it on for about 5 hours so I think it might be doing a compensation cycle, not really sure though. i don't see a standby light. With my LG it was very easy to know when it was doing it.

jrref 09-08-2018 01:18 PM

That cycle is very quick so you shouldn't need to keep it off

i did look at the 5% video from youtube after having the tv on for about 4 hours. i will say this, it's not perfect. I watched that scene from Marco Polo and banding was visible but not terribly distracting. i think the banding is worse on my LG. I also looked at Annabelle Creation which is the movie where I first noticed banding on my LG and I have to say that on the Sony it is not as visible. Again, not perfect but better so far. I still need to do some more watching :)

I do have an X-BOX but not really a gamer, that would be my nephew. DV looks great to me so far. I think there are only 3 picture modes for DV. Vivid, Bright Room and Dark Room.

should the standby light stay on when you turn the power off? I don't see that it's on.

Thanks for checking.

it seems like banding is better out of the box which is good. the question is to what extent it will improve after further panel refreshes. my guess is that a8f and a9f will have a similar amount of banding after thousands of hours and panel refreshes, even if the a9f has less banding out of box.

Real curious to hear what you find as far as the dreaded vertical yellow band(s) ... and/or pink ...
The 4k of Lawrence of Arabia stream(Amazon) is a good check if you are so inclined. Look for the sand to change color on those stunning 65mm desert pans.

here are my 5%, 10% and 20% pics. this is after 10 hours of use. i was watching hereditary and did notice a lot of banding on many shots. if this does not get better within the next 45 days I'm afraid I may return this unit. i just can't justify spending what I spent on this tv and have to live with and accept this banding. what do you guys think, is this a keeper?

helvetica bold 09-08-2018 06:58 PM

Would you try watching Altered Carbon on Netflix? There’s some really dramatic HDR so I think that should show off what the A9F can do.

I kept saying sony never meant near black uniformity (banding or streaking) when they used the word uniformity. bands and streaks are a panel level issue. I had lots of opposition from the "believers".

helvetica bold 09-08-2018 07:03 PM

Aside from banding how do things look?
