2019 LG Z9 Signature 8K OLED Anticipation Thread

https://www.lg.com/us/tvs/lg-OLED88Z9PUA-oled-tv

https://www.pocket-lint.com/tv/revie...oled-tv-review

The website is up. No pricing yet.

I was wishing for a 88" OLED last year when I bought my C8 as it is the perfect size for my room. That wish has now come true. HDMI 2.1 with VRR that will hopefully work with the new Nvidia driver. And 8K is just a nice bonus. I hope the pricing is not too outrageous.

Who else is in?

Already a thread? LG hasn't even held their CES presser yet.
I wish I had a tree in the backyard of my house that printed currency bills, then I could have been a part of this thread. Oh well.

Well, on the one hand, the 85" Samsung 8K QLED/LCD has an MSRP of 'only' $15K.

But on the other hand, I suspect LG will be happy if they sell relatively few of the 88" 8K WOLEDs based on bottom-emission.

Among other things, peak brightness can always be increased on WOLED at the expense of lifetime/burn-in immunity and I'm pretty sure LG does not want any regular CNN watchers to get ahold of their first 8K WOLED using bottom-emission...

My long-winded way of saying I suspect you may be right - LG may be happy to launch the 88Z9 at prices that make 85Q900R customers envious but deciding the better balcks (and better framerate) are not worth the premium...

2020, with too-emission, will be LGs true campaign to gain share in the nascent marhet for 8K TVs - the 88Z9 is primarily for bragging rights, perception as a technology leader, and to stay in the game until 2020 when it all starts to become real...

@fafrd Do you know the native refresh rate of the Z9? I know its still limited to 60hz input for 8K but can it display 120hz 4K natively?

Don't know anything for certain, but I'm pretty sure that the 88Z9 is limited to a 60Hz refresh rate implemented as a split-column architecture refreshing each half-panel @ 120Hz. The upper half-frame of 2160 lines is refreshed @ 120Hz followed by the lower half-frame of 2160 lines being refreshed at 120Hz. In the end, a full 8K frame is written at 60Hz.

It would be fantastic if the Z9 supported a '4K Refresh Mode' that allowed 4K frames to be written onto the 8K panel at an Effective Refresh Rate of 240Hz (writing 2 columns and 2 rows of 8K pixels at a time into each half-panel), like the 4K WOLEDs, but I don't yet have any information as to whether the Z9 supports a 4K refresh mode or not...

It would be a fantastic feature and should be relatively straightforward to support, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed .

Yes. The stand is optional. I'm glad its included though since I don't wall mount and I don't have a stand this big.

Is the stand just an empty shelf?

My guess is the the prices will be similar to the 77" when they first came out. $25k. A year after release, 2019 models will likely be around $15k. New models will still be at $25k.

This or its successor is the only thing that I'd trade my display, an 88" Samsung KS9810 FALD from 2016 I got on super close out, for. Can't stomach the thought of a smaller display. When these are $10k or less I'm in. I can wait.

Stuck up, half witted, scruffy looking, nerf herder.

I'm a projector enthusiast, but I'm starting to think about that 88 inch OLED. I have a 110 inch screen and a JVC projector. The thing about projectors is that they can't get to the perfect blacks and amazing contrast of OLED. (Although there is a new projector that can, but it costs six figures!) I don't know, we'll see when the 88 inch gets more affordable (10k or less). The bigger these OLEDs get, the more I'm thinking about switching to them from a projector.

$18,000. Me guess.

By the time it comes out later this year, the Samsung 8k will have dropped to $12,000. LG, while larger, will need to be competitive. And then they will be coming out with smaller sizes in 8K...and larger possibly.

Woops, I thought we were talking about the rollable 4K 65" and now understand we're talking about the 88" 8K.

Same prediction on it coming out but I don't think the price will make anyone happy - LG does not want to sell any meaningful numbers of these this year (2020 may be different).

As we've seen with LG's 77" WOLED pricing (at least until last year), whe you don't want to sell a large number of a model conpared to the competition, you don't need to offer competetive pricing...

The R model does yes. That's actually what the screen rolls up into. The Z model being discussed in this thread however does not.

New article on Z says support for 120fps HFR:

No, that's only for the 4K 2019 WOLEDs: "LG says its 2019 TVs will also support HFR, or High Frame Rate for smooth, clear motion at 120fps."

The Z is limited to 60Hz (and so will probably support any 'HFR' features it can at up to 60Hz).
