Question Quick question, jrref, re. calibration setting

LG claims this dithering process has been further refined on the 2020 LGs.
Hi John- a quick question: When you do your calibration settings on the A9G (and may I assume the A8H), are you now using the "Dolby Bright" instead of "Dolby Dark" ??

John calibrated my A9G. For SDR, he gave me 3 calibrated options (Custom Pro1 for viewing in the dark, Custom Pro2 for viewing in a bright setting, and Custom for in-between). I use Custom Pro1 for at night, and Custom for during the day (it's never very bright in my family room, so I never use Custom Pro2). I believe the A9G then automatically translates those SDR settings to create the optimal settings for HDR Pro1 or 2, and for DV Dark or Bright, for night and day settings, respectively.

Hey thanks Bill ! I very much appreciate you taking the time to explain that in helpful detail. Okay, so that makes sense. Yea, so like you, those same settings would work for my similar room conditions in the room I intend for a new SONY. NOW, I just have to decide on A9G OR A8H. I do love my college football, so maybe the BFI of that A8H might serve me juuuust a tad better...but I do prefer the look of your A9G (stand without the duck feet)
Again, thanks for the explanation. You are a great member on here and consistently helpful to many !

Thanks, got IMAX working. Did not have Pass Through set to Auto in the A9G. It appears a little buggy, but it works. Thanks for sending me in the right direction!!

So i’ve been using these settings for my 55 for the past couple of months and have been very pleased with the results; one question for D-Nice: are these settings still valid? I noticed you turned Smooth Gradation on to Low, and turned off Cinemotion for the the 77. I would assume those particular settings would be consistent across the board for the A9G. I’m completely a novice here, so forgive me if I’m way off base here. Anyway thanks for all the help, you’ve definitely improved my viewing experience.

Dear fellow A9G owners, I posted this back in February but don't believe anyone replied. Is anyone else having issues with soundbars (Sonos, Bose, etc.) and volume control?

>>

My Experience with a Sony XBR-65A9G, Sonos/Bose Soundbars, and ANDROID PIE.

Hello forum,

Around Christmas I upgraded to a 65" A9G. The TV itself is wonderful and I intend to find someone in the NYC area to calibrate it.

I paired the A9G with the Sonos Beam, subwoofer, and rear speakers. The Beam is connected via HDMI (ARC).

On the A9G, when the TV speakers are enabled, the volume control from any remote (Sony, Tivo, or Apple TV) is super fast and crisp.

When I try any of those remotes with audio switched to the Sonos Beam, the volume control has always been super slow. With the TV speakers, I can go from 0-40 in a 2-3 seconds, but with the Sonos it takes at closer to 10. Also, single-pressing "volume up" will go from 20 to 22 to 24 most of the time, but sometimes jumps by increments of 3 instead.

Holding down the volume up button is completely unpredictable - I see jumps from 20 to 28 to 40, etc. This all makes for a very displeasing experience with Sonos.

I tried upgrading to Android Pie on the Sony, and the issue got worse, not better. I upgraded the firmware on the Sonos, and no change. I tried a Bose Soundbar 700 and the issue was still there, pinpointing the Sony TV as the issue with HDMI/CEC. (I even tried turning on eARC on the TV since the Bose soundbar apparently has it enabled, but that did not help the issue).

Do others experience this issue as well? Why is it that in 2020 we still suffer with HDMI/CEC issues? Truly appreciate any feedback!

Is any A9G owner using YouTube TV on their actual TV? I'm trying to troubleshoot this stupid horizontal flashing line that I mentioned awhile back. It's driving me nuts. I can't even watch content half the time because of this stupid static line in the right corner that just flashes repeatedly over and over and over.

YouTube TV forum doesn't really have much advice. Aside from a lone reddit thread, I can't seem to find anyone else experiencing the issue. Restarted the TV - nothing. Reinstalling the app - nothing. Wifi connection is more than adequate. I just really hope that isn't another "bug" on the A9G, because the chances of it being fixed are unlikely.

Is the line at the very top of the screen? If so, I have seen it too. I don't watch YouTubeTV all that much on the A9G and I focus away from the top of the screen, so I can tolerate it. I wouldn't get my hopes up for it being fixed, as many Fire TV devices have an annoying micro stutter that has existed for more than six months.

Yep. Very top. The right side most of the time.

Not worth the cost IMO if the issue persists.

I definitely understand the annoyance. I watch YoutubeTV more on other TVs than the A9G, so it doesn't bother me that much, and with the lack of sports for the past few months, I haven't watched YTTV much in general. I did watch the 10 part "The Last Dance" documentary on ESPN and the flashing line could not have been too prominent because I don't remember it being particularly annoying.

Is there a way to unlock the pic adjustment settings? Mine have always been locked on the A9G.

For internal apps, I cannot change the aspect ratio or zoom. Actually, I have one idea: Do you have the pixel shift turned on (it is on default)? If so, try turning it off and see if that changes anything.

Ah. Didn’t think of that. It is always on. But I will turn it off and test it again.

Update: No luck. Didn't make a difference.

I uploaded a video to YouTube - this was on CBS during Titanic.

I had your problem on my very first 77 AG9 after a week.

The problem was less visible than you but it was not normal
I went to the store and I was exchanged. cause: Breakdown during unpacking .... I did not have this problem on my second.

No adjustment can solve your problem. I even changed the electrical outlet .... nothing had changed.

So something “broke” in my set that doesn’t affect the performance of any streaming content or any viewing content whatsoever except YouTube TV? That seems very unusual.

Here is a reddit thread I found with a handful of people with an identical issue.

Bonjour D Nice
on your calibration report file, it is indicated that you have calibrated in D65 (0.3127 / 0.329)
I thought you were using this white point: 0.3095 / 0.329 ( you used this white point for the calibration of the sony AH8 it seems to me in your report ...)

What is the reason for this choice please?

Yes. The native YTTV app. The issue does not occur with anything else.

I checked last night and it occurs for me as well. The flashes occur roughly once every 10 seconds. Although they have always been there, I generally don't notice because of the relatively infrequency of the flashes and because my eyes are normally not focused on that area.

Do you have YTTV on an external device as well? I’m certain it’s just the internal app.

Yes, I have it on a Shield, Fire TV, and Roku Ultra. I have not noticed the flashing on any of the other devices. I mentioned earlier that I am not confident it will ever be addressed, as the Fire TV has exhibited a microstutter that is evident when watching sports for at least six months (I switched to YTTV in November). This microstutter has been mentioned on the Reddit YoutubeTV numerous times and was supposedly being addressed months ago.

Now that my Oppo player can do. But what it can’t do is this: Say there’s a person walking in the moving image. IF the Sony OLED can zoom the image 3 or 4X, can the remote then allow you to keep the zoomed person’s head “centered” on the screen by depressing a remote button left, right, up or down. Got it?

This may be a feature that the Sony OLED actually has, buried in the remote, even if it wasn’t actually mentioned in the manual.

As far as i know theres basically no zoom.
When the resolution is 4K it cant be used at all, and if its lower the zoom is very limited, someone correct me if im wrong

Please forgive me if this has been covered before, but exactly what color settings (from those listed above) need to be inputted to the TV settings when watching aa Dolby Vision movie on the internal Netflix app? On my TV, it APPEARS that the 10 point color gamma adjustments I made while in SDR mode are still there, but the basic RGB gain adjusts were not. Am I supposed to add them for DV on Netflix? It also appears that the PER COLOR adjustments are not carried over from SDR either.

Thanks, in advance!

Three words: PROCESSING, PROCESSING, Processing. What was I thinking??? Thought I’d try something new being a Sony guy smh. Well, let’s just say the LG GX is returned and the A9G is once again here to stay indefinitely. Having the GX after owning the A9G for 2 weeks, it did look good. LG has its own unique look. It’s own type of processing. But now that I have the A9G back again, you really see the differences going back and forth between the two. Sony’s processing is unmatched. No matter how close competitors get, they’ll never be equal, just allllllmost there. LG GX/CX is no slouch. Just a different experience I should say. Only issue is, I’m still experiencing audio dropouts via internal apps over eARC and occasional non recognition of my Fios cable box. Those were the reasons why I tried LG. And I still came back knowing I’d have these issues. That says a lot.

Thanks for checking that out.

This probably sounds silly (I could be developing a reputation for this) but if you happen to have some spare time (who hasn't these days), and if you have one of the Oppos, Arcams or the Pioneer LX500 please try the following: This may work with a BD but probably not, thanks to Oracle’s BD-J authoring platform. So instead play one or more of your best mastered DVD movies and set the player to zoom in at least 2 or 3X.

How “bad” do the zoomed images look if the Sony OLED, rather than the player, is doing the upscaling?

If your higher end DVD or BD player has no zoom control there are some excellent software players like JRiver which do, plus slow motion and other useful functionality.
