It’s own type of processing. But now that I have the A9G back again, you really see the differences going back and forth between the two. Sony’s processing is unmatched. No matter how close competitors get, they’ll never be equal, just allllllmost there. LG GX/CX is no slouch. Just a different experience I should say. Only issue is, I’m still experiencing audio dropouts via internal apps over eARC and occasional non recognition of my Fios cable box. Those were the reasons why I tried LG. And I still came back knowing I’d have these issues. That says a lot.
You pretty much summed up my experience with the A9G and the C9 last September.

Same thing goes for me. I was so fed up with Sony’s crappy, unreliable firmware and their customer service that doesn’t even deserve its name that I sold it in order to buy an LG C9. While I like the OS and the internal Dolby Vision playback on the LG much more (e.g. no posterization in in darker parts of some shows), the overall image somehow looks less sharp than on the Sony and I also prefer motionflow over trumotion.

So I guess it will be another AG9 for me....maybe Panasonic instead...

I'm still on the fence for an 77" A9G or a 77" CX/GX for my in-progress basement finishing project. Going to depend on pricing, honestly. Would love the A9G (especially since it sounds like it handles motion best, and this will largely be a sports watching TV in addition to gaming) but I'm not sure if it's worth the uptick is cost to me or not. That being said, what does everyone recommend for an ultra thin wall mount for the A9G? The way that my basement will lay out, you will enter the living room from the side, so keeping the TV as tight to the wall is going to be optimal for me.

77” A9G & CX are the exact same price at $4999. The GX is the most expensive at $5999. Sony is the winner here being that you’re getting an overall better TV experience for the same price. The CX will drop in price by at least $1000 by Black Friday.

I’m in a similar situation trying to decide between A9G or the Z9G. Both sets really impress me. I change my sets every 5 years.

If I could afford the Z9G, I would’ve purchased it. That’s $4999 vs $7999. A lil too rich for my blood lol. I’m already pushing it with the A9G.

Why? The A9g is incredible. What do you feel the Z9G does better other than perhaps HDR and that comes with a blooming cost.

It has superb HDR performance and the blacks are great for an LCD due to the backlight master drive. My A9G is in my bright open living room also. Plus the Z9G is 85”. 8K is just the small unusable cherry on top lol. Everything i here about the Z9G is superb. If I had it my way, my dream setup would have the 85Z9G in my bright open living room/family room and I’d make a dedicated theater room with a 77A9G.

I think you may have helped me make a decision here. Dreaming aside though. ;0 How is the bright room performance of the A9g? My room has a wall of glass. 30ft. I watch mostly in the evening. The good lady watches at. different times of day. My940c sometimes struggles.

Given how you are describing your room the A9g might not be the best choice imo , it can cope with a moderately bright room but beyond that it might not be the best viewing experience during the day .

It's always tough to say since people have different sensitivities. My random thoughts:

A big 30' glass window will likely be a problem, so in your case I would definitely recommend a big super bright LCD with good anti-reflection screen (I think Sony is just average in this regard). If you don't have screens or curtains, eevn at night you will likely get some ambiant lighting from the outside refelcting on your screen.

For most people though, OLED's in general can get so much brighter than what LCD's used to a few years ago and we never had so much concern about "bright room viewing" as we do these days. My living room has decent sized windows and I watch TV during the day...of course, I need to watch with the blinds angled so there's no direct sunlight, and it's a struggle when watching dark scenes too. I think it's more of a screen refelction issue for me, and I also wouldn't do critical watching in the daytime. But for normal every day shows and sports, it's plenty bright for me and I have a feeling what most people consider "bright room" is more normal than they think and no issue for OLED.

I have a feeling your good lady won't notice nor care if she's missing out on some shadow detail because of the room lighting but you might

TL;DR get the 85" Z9G

Take a look at the Sony SU-WL855 that was designed for the A9G. It sits the back of the TV about an inch off the wall and the screen about 3 inches from the wall.

I thought they were equal, but going from one, to the other, then back... you’re able to really tell the difference. That Sony picture processing Is unmatched. Motion and processing have a HUGE impact. Some people try to minimize those factors. It can’t be minimized.

Just got a notice for software update v6.3950 on my 65" A9G.

Sony also has another update which has not been pushed to my set yet.

Should I or not?

Just completed a Chad B calibration 1 week ago, dont want to throw it off

It won’t affect the calibration. And from what I’ve experienced, I didn’t really affect anything at all with performance.

If you're not experiencing any issues with your current version of software installed on your set, then I would advise NOT to install any software updates at this point.

Are you able to post the changelog for the update? This seems to be different from the current v6.3626 firmware for the A9G.

A8h

I'm posting this here because there isn't a large history in the A8H thread and the sets are close enough. A search didn't turn up anything. I'm aware of the A9G turning off after a recent update, but this stays on.

Anyone experiencing the screen going black (not turning off because the Bravia logo on the bottom right is visible)? It's like it goes into standby/sleep mode or something (I checked those settings, unless I missed something). I'm able to return to live TV by selecting cable/sat input. This happened close to a dozen this morning while watching TV for about a half an hour. This happened every 2-4 minutes, or in that neighborhood. I had no problem yesterday.

Might be resolved by trying these steps, which did work for us after a lot of research in Sony Support-

With the TV ON,
1). Turn on each HDMI-attached device, then unplug each HDMI cable (doesn’t matter which end), while each device is still ON.
2). Perform a hard reboot (aka power reset, not factory reset) of the TV by pressing and holding the POWER button down on the Sony remote with no HDMI cables attached.
3). While each cable is still detached, turn each HDMI device OFF.
3). With the TV ON first, re-attach each HDMI cable and device, then turn each device ON.

This resets the HDMI connection between each device and the TV (EDID), and the hard reboot often clears up post-FW update issues in the TV.

Thanks, bobby. I just started running the plasma break-in slides after finishing that process, so I'll see what happens.

These Questions are for D-Nice. I will number them since I have a lot in order to make it easier for you to answer, if you would be so gracious.
1. I do not see sharpness settings for either set of settings you posted.

2. I saw a different post of yours that indicated for people using a setting of 48 Color to use a setting of 50 Color in HDR and Dolbyvision. If I have "Per Color Adjustments" made in accordance with a Color setting of 48 in SDR, Won't that make them not map out properly to HDR and SDR with a Color setting of 50 in those 2 formats (HDR/Dolbyvision)?

3. Why should we be using Reality Creation at 4 on the 2020 builds, and not on the 2019 builds?

5. If I am calibrating my 77" A9G to 77.6 Footlamberts (With Peak Luminance on HIGH, and Gamma at -2 targeting 2.4), is my picture going to really be accurate as long as my grayscale, gamma, and measurements of color for Red, Magenta, Blue, Green, Cyan, and Yellow all have delta errors at around 0.2 and 0.1? I am reading 75% / 75% only, and do not have the ability to run colorchecker, so should I assume the color at other levels will have much larger errors, or if 75% / 75% is showing errors that low should I assume the rest is following suit at least closely?

6. When measuring grayscale/gamma on Calman, the 100% pattern pulls the entire power gamma line graph in different directions, so let's say I start with a measurement of 100% IRE and measure from 0% IRE up to 95% IRE, 60% up to 95% may progressively dip down towards 2.0, but let's say I measure 100% a second time, the graph will straighten out closer to 2.4. Same thing applies if I was to wait 3 to 5 seconds before taking the 100% reading, it will give me different results along the entire graph generally from 60% IRE to 95% IRE. Is this ABL kicking in on the 100% pattern, changing it's luminance levels and ultimately effecting the rest of the graph? If so, which reading of 100% should I base my adjustments of 60% to 95% to? The very first 100% reading as soon as the pattern pops up, wait 3 to 5 seconds then take the reading, or just take a second reading after 95%? Very confusing...

7. Could you look at my attached calibration results and tl me what you think? Can't seem to get 80% IRE to 95% IRE to ever flatten out. I'm using Ted's 21 Step Grayscale Patterns with the A9G Internal VLC Media Player App and takingvreadings with an I1 Pro-2 on Calman Home For Sony.

INPUT FROM OTHERS WOULD BE APPRECIATED AS WELL 🙂🙂

Anyone experiencing the screen going black (not turning off because the Bravia logo on the bottom right is visible)? It's like it goes into standby/sleep mode or something (I checked those settings, unless I missed something). I'm able to return to live TV by selecting cable/sat input. This happened close to a dozen this morning while watching TV for about a half an hour. This happened every 2-4 minutes, or in that neighborhood. I had no problem yesterday.
Yes it happens a lot with my Fios cable box. Black screen with Bravia at the bottom left. Doesn’t happen with my PS4 Pro or oppo 203.

Anyone else getting random lockups and restarts using internal apps or otherwise? It does not happens every day but it occurs when trying to bring up settings or navigating the Netflix menu for example. When I purchased the tv I didn't notice the issue but after I got an OTA update this started, I have manually installed newer firmwares to see if any of them would fix this issue but so far no good.

Yes. Read through the thread. The last couple of updates caused a freezing issue while using the internal apps. The problem became so frustrating for me that I bought an Apple TV.

I was a bit stubborn about it, because the only apps I use (Netflix, Amazon, YouTube TV) are all available as internal apps, but there are too many issues with sound dropouts via ARC, as well as this weird static line on YouTube TV that keeps flashing.

None of those issues are present on ATV. And no need to worry about ARC dropouts. I still think it's kind of an unnecessary addition for my limited streaming habits, but who knows if Sony will ever fix these problems. The audio dropouts that affect certain AVRs have been going on forever, including with older models. And when you throw on all of these restarts that are needed, it's just best to not worry with all that crap.
