Currently, ATV4K is the best streamer in terms of video and audio quality compared to competing "ultra" streamers (4K versions of Firestick, Roku, native apps, etc.) with the exception of Chromecast Ultra which is the only streamer capable of passing 4K HDR YouTube content.

Except it has been noticably dim on Sony oleds with Dolby Vision. This is the reason I use the 800M2, or any newer Sony Bluray player for streaming Amazon and Netflix. They output 2160p/24 and I can force HDR10 instead of DV.

Not sure if the dim DV applies to the A9G or not but is obvious on the A1E and A8F.

I switched my AT 4K to Gerry’s recommendation and turned on hdmi to enhanced and still have frosty issues. I’ve ordered the Belkin cable and the monoprice cable. Going to see if that changes anything.

Also to the poster asking about his Netflix and Prime Video not working. That did happen to me the other night through the apps on the Sony. They just showed a black screen and I couldn’t access them. I could access all the other apps. The next night they worked fine again.

FYI - Found out that you can't watch Dolby Vision discs through LG Blu Ray players with the A9G - needs to be a sony/panasonic/oppo due to Sony's implementation of DV. (basically Sony told the other manufacturers they needed to push a firmware update on their side to fix the issue with Sony's DV implementation and LG hasn't done yet)

Just bought a UBK90 so I'm returning it for a UBP-X800M2

Are you using the 800M2 over the built in Apps for that reason? or what made you choose to use the blu-ray player for streaming

thanks!

I like having the player as backup in case my main player goes down, and have thought Sony's player apps for Amazon and Netflix work very well, and the PQ is great. So I have two players, instead of say a player and streaming box. And I just never use the display apps, mine isnt event connected to wifi. On the older Sony OLED's being connected would slow them down, granted I do not think that is the case now.

Gotcha! Was just curious if I should use the apps on the 800M2 I'm getting or keep them on the display apps.

I can try streaming Netflix directly through the built-in TV app and see if it changes anything but my guess is it won’️t. I think what I’️m looking at is digital compression noise made worse also by poor quality scanning. The poor compression is most likely to save space in the cloud.

And yes to your question about the Enhanced HDMI format and Custom Picture mode.

Update: I just tried downloading an episode of Star Trek Discovery to my iPad and then I used AirPlay to stream the TV episode directly to the A9G, it didn’️t make any difference. My guess is it’️s the built in compression Apple uses to store the video files. Also depending upon the way the movie was filmed can exasperate the artifacts.

PS: If anyone has an 4K Apple TV they can test this on I’️d appreciate it. Thx
ATV4K raises its compression to match your bandwidth, do you have consistently high download speeds?
It’s Fiber Very Fast - 120+ MBPS.

Well I am thinking at this point it’s probably something to do with the way the director originally filled it. It could also be the way it’s up scaling 1080p content to 4K.

Hi all,

Any big changes from the A9F to A9G? I saw a few (new remote, auto cinemotion, similar but slightly improved input lag, generally the same picture quality) but anything else?

My A9F is being warranty-replaced with a new A9G by Sony after it developed a line of dead pixels across the screen.

CBS all access streaming is junk. I watched season 2 on my LG oled and it looked like crap. It's because it's compressed to crap. This is a case where I think it's okay to use higher settings of the smoother just realize that in this case you'll be losing some fine detail and you won't want to keep this setting for all things.

Streaming quality can be pretty bad sometimes depending on the service.

No PQ changes. Other than the remote, the A9F has collectively more expensive parts. I'd rather they replace with another A9F and give me the new remote. Input lag improvement is not even worth mentioning.

Generally, it's always better to output 1080p natively and let the X1 Ultimate processor do all your upscaling and motion refinement.

Not sure if the dim DV applies to the A9G or not but is obvious on the A1E and A8F.
On the a8f and even on previous Sony lcds with high peak brightness that I had, DV was very dim. Not on my a9g though, especially with DV bright mode.

Where can i read about the difference in quality/price of the parts in the A9G vs A9F?

The integrated Netflix app on the A8F used to briefly show a Dolby Vision logo on DV-encoded content in the upper righthand corner. I noticed that the A9G no longer shows this info.
I am looking for a sanity check here, so any confirmation is greatly appreciated.

Probably a good way to get a refurb instead of a new panel.

The A9F has one extra speaker that was dropped to make a thinner back on the A9G. That's the only element of a more expensive part. Irrelevant for most people who would pair a top end screen like this with external speakers.

The article is a comparison between the A8F and the A9F. The A9G is not even mentioned in the article. Nor are the expense of parts mentioned anywhere in the article. Am I misunderstanding something here?

You have to change the TVs to compare at the top of the chart. Use the drop downs to pick the correct tv.

The A9F has a slightly better sound system and a Rube Goldberg kickstand. I prefer the the A9G's more traditional stand and significantly improved remote.

I think I would be happy with the free upgrade to the new model. Well I guess in the end you can let us know right? Kinda is what it is.

haha, yeah. I'll be happy to report back in a week or two once it comes.

Does anyone know if there's a way to buy an extended warranty now? There's about 6 months left on my original warranty, and the new A9G will only be covered for that remaining time.

Is the motion worth the upgrade from a af8? I had to go through 3 af8's to get a good one. I do not want to go through all that again if its not worth it.
