Main differences between the 2018 C8 model and the 2019 C9 model:
.
  • HDMI 2.1 - four full 48Gbps ports
  • Alpha α9 Gen 2 scaler software - better 4-stage Noise Reduction
  • 1440p resolution support (gamers only or for people who use tv as a monitor)
  • VRR with 40Hz-120Hz range (gamers only)
  • eARC adds support for bitstreaming lossless HD audio (Dolby TrueHD, TrueHD+Atmos, DTS-HD HR, DTS-HD MA & DTS:X
  • HDCP 2.3 - supported only after a future firmware update
  • ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode) (gamers only)
  • Bluetooth – C9 has the 5.0 version (C8 has the 4.2) - all devices can be BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy), allows you to play audio on two connected devices at the same time (aka Dual Audio), four times the range (240 meters), two times the speed (2 Mbps), and eight times the broadcasting message capacity of older versions of Bluetooth;
  • Variable Analog Audio Out (3.5mm headphone jack)
  • improved color volume
  • expanded calibration options
  • improved temporary image retention
  • screen is less darkened for news channels that have icons, banners, etc. (less aggressive ABL)
  • significantly improved input lag for many resolutions/refresh rates (under 7ms at 120Hz, gamers only)
  • metal stand instead of plastic, larger footprint, more stable
  • improved WebOS (version 4.5, runs smoother, plus a few more options)
  • Google Assistant support
  • Amazon Alexa support (only after May 2019 03.60.02 firmware update)
  • Apple AirPlay 2 and Apple HomeKit support (only after the June 2019 03.60.19 firmware update)
  • Connect/control various Internet of Things devices
  • improved motion handling
  • improved black crush
  • possibly better at avoiding burn-in, time will tell (less relevant for non-gamers and non-news watchers)

Thanks, @Baff - as the original source for this list;

Known problems for LG C9

Audio related

Feature affected: eARC
Description: does not pass-through 6/8 channel LPCM, only 2.0 channel LPCM (Stereo);
Mitigation: the C9 can be forced to accept 8ch LPCM with an (HDFury or similar) EDID adapter inserted between the source and the TV - RTINGS tested again, and AudioEDID manipulation does not actually work on the C9...;
Incidence: general and permanent until further notice;
Status: LG has been informed, waiting for a resolution;
LG support ticket: https://lgcommunity.us.com/discussio...c-pass-through
Notes: discovered by RTINGS.com; reported to John Archer of Forbes.com ; should be easy for LG to add the necessary 6/8 channel LPCM EDID to the AudioEDID section of the HDMI ports via a firmware update;

Feature affected: eARC
Description: the 2017 eARC compatible models of Denon+Marantz receivers are not negotiating more than 2.0 LPCM (Stereo), no lossless HD audio bistreaming;
Mitigation: the C9 (and as a consequence the D+M AVR) can be forced with an (HDFury or similar) EDID adapter inserted between the AVR and the TV (on the cable carrying eARC) to accept more formats than the basic Stereo, but achieving lossless HD audio Pass-through seems impossible with a 2017 D+M AVR;
Incidence: general and permanent until further notice;
Status: LG has been informed, waiting for a resolution;
LG support ticket: https://lgcommunity.us.com/discussio...d-denon-x4400h
Notes: known affected D+M AVR models: Denon AVR-X3400H, X4400H, X6400H, Marantz SR7012; this does not seems to be LG's fault, but Denon/Marantz fault (Denon has repeatedly refused to acknowledge the problem - they said that they tested and it works (!)); see the LG C9 eARC Info Thread for more info about this;

Feature affected: eARC
Description: eARC is disabled with SimpLink/CEC set to OFF in the TV setup menu;
Mitigation: none, keep the SimpLink/CEC=ON;
Incidence: general and permanent until further notice;
Status: -;
LG support ticket: -
Notes: eARC should work regardless of the TV SimpLink/CEC state; Sony eARC TVs do not link the BraviaSync/CEC state to the eARC state;

Feature affected: Internal speakers
Description: random return to internal speakers instead of the previously configured ARC/eARC, it can happen on Power ON or on source switch;
Mitigation: -;
Incidence: low, for now;
Status: -;
LG support ticket: -
Notes: known affected firmware: 03.60.04 (may NOT be restricted to that version!);

Feature affected: Internal apps audio
Description: Netflix or other apps do not pass-through lossless HD audio via eARC, but lossy formats such as DD+Atmos work;
Mitigation: must use an external HDMI source for HD Audio;
Incidence: general and permanent until further notice;
Status: -;
LG support ticket: -
Notes: This is also a known problem with the eARC Sony TVs; as of 2019, no known streaming services are sending lossless HD audio, just compressed audio via DD or DD+ soundtracks; this problem may exacerbate when streaming services will upgrade to lossless HD audio;

Feature affected: USB Media Player
Description: WebOS media player does not pass-through lossless HD audio via eARC, but lossy formats such as DD+Atmos work;
Mitigation: must use an external HDMI source for HD Audio;
Incidence: general and permanent until further notice;
Status: -;
LG support ticket: -
Notes: LG has not updated WebOS or the internal media player app to support lossless HD audio soundtracks such as TrueHD, TrueHD+Atmos, DTS-HD HR, DTS-HD MA or DTS:X, even if their TV supports lossless HD audio via eARC link; might be a licensing (not technical) restriction;

Feature affected: DLNA audio
Description: DLNA is unable to pass-through lossless HD audio via eARC;
Mitigation: must use an external HDMI source for HD Audio;
Incidence: general and permanent until further notice;
Status: -;
LG support ticket: -
Notes: LG has not updated the integrated DLNA service to support lossless HD audio soundtracks such as TrueHD, TrueHD+Atmos, DTS-HD HR, DTS-HD MA or DTS:X, even if their TV supports lossless HD audio via eARC link; might be a licensing (not technical) restriction;

Feature affected: Audio
Description: considerable audio delay when Dolby Digital or Dolby Digital Plus soundtracks are played by an HDMI source connected to the C9 and the audio is pass-through to an AVR/soundbar via ARC or Optical Out (SPDIF/TosLink). If source sends PCM or DTS soundtracks = no delay. If source is connected directly to the AVR/soundbar = no delay. Audio originating from internal apps (ex. Netflix) = no delay.;
Mitigation: If you set the C9 'Sound Out' to PCM rather than Pass-through, the delay is greatly improved (but not zero).;
Incidence: general and permanent until further notice;
Status: LG has been informed, waiting for a resolution;
LG support ticket: https://lgcommunity.us.com/discussio...-dolby-sources
Notes: ?audio transcoding bug?; known affected firmware: 03.60.04 (may NOT be restricted to that version!);

Display/Image related

Feature affected: ABL (Automatic Brightness Limiter)
Description: ABL (Automatic Brightness Limiter) can be a little too aggressive with the "AI Brightness" set to ON and HDR/DV content, also when bright colors are all over the screen - with Chrome browser/Windows Explorer (all white) the display changes brightness depending on the size of the app window;
Mitigation: set AI brightness=OFF, for Chrome browser you can use the "chrome://flags/#force-color-profile" flag to set the Chrome window to SDR instead of HDR;
Incidence: low, for now;
Status: LG has been informed, waiting for a resolution;
LG support ticket: https://lgcommunity.us.com/discussio...s-a-pc-monitor
Notes: this problem might not have an expected resolve;

Feature affected: Display/Video+Audio/Internal apps/Networking
Description: C9 occasionally freezes for a few seconds - after the freeze ends everything goes fast forward to catch up (including the sound, which gets a bit out of sync), it can happen with Youtube/Netflix apps with the TV on either Ethernet or WiFi and even with a Blu-ray player.; it can block the whole TV and you must force Power OFF and then Power ON the TV to regain control;
Mitigation: do not let the TV update itself to the 03.60.04 firmware version; do not manually update to the 03.60.04 firmware version; if you are already using the 03.60.04 firmware version all you can do is close all the apps and start again;
Incidence: low-medium, for now;
Status: LG has been informed, waiting for a resolution;
LG support ticket: https://lgcommunity.us.com/discussio...s-fast-forward
Notes: known affected firmware: 03.60.04 (may NOT be restricted to that version!);

Power related

Feature affected: Power supply/Noise
Description: prety loud coil whine from the power supply, occurs mostly on dimly lit content;
Mitigation: none, please contact LG for a resolution/replacement of power supply;
Incidence: low, for now;
Status: -;
LG support ticket: -
Notes: first reported on a 77" C9 model, might not be the same problem as the prevalent coil whine of the 2018 77C8 models;

Feature affected: Power supply/Noise
Description: slight chirping (low coil whine) from the power supply, especially during gaming (switching scenes);
Mitigation: -;
Incidence: low, for now;
Status: -;
LG support ticket: -
Notes: first reported on a 65" C9 model;

Notes:
(general) - all the 2018 or 2019 Denon/Marantz eARC models are expected to work just fine;
(general) - all the 2017 Denon/Marantz eARC models are expected to NOT work, this is NOT the LG's fault, but Denon/Marantz fault (Denon/Marantz support should be contacted ASAP to let them know and resolve this problem);
*1) requires HDMI Control/CEC=ON on the receiver for eARC to work;
*2) if you do not need SimpLink/HDMI Control (you use an universal remote) eARC works (ignoring the TV Audio setup) with CEC=OFF and ARC=OFF on Denon and eARC=ON on C9 (also works about the same with the 2018 Sony A9F/AF9 OLED eARC TV, with CEC=OFF on both and ARC=OFF on Denon), this setup should work with all the 2018/2019 Denon/Marantz eARC models;
*3) requires SimpLink=ON on the C9 and HDMI Control=ON on the S750H for eARC to work (but with the TV Audio setup?);
*4) also works with 2019 Sony X950G eARC TV;
*5) on TV Audio is capable of only Stereo with the 2018 Sony A9F/AF9 OLED eARC TVs internal apps, lossless audio does pass-through!);
*6) on TV Audio is capable of only Stereo with the C9
*7) also no lossless audio with the 2018 Sony A9F/AF9 OLED eARC TVs internal apps/Plex

  • added support for voice commands by interacting with Siri or the Home app

** NOTES:
(1) The changelog information above is provided as-is, without any further explanation and only when I am able to obtain it. If the information listed above doesn't make sense, please don't ask for clarification, as I have none;
(2) US models are sometimes a version or two behind EU/KOR models - hence the "doubling" of what has changed for various versions;

Order of updates per regions
- LG does not push the firmware updates for all regions at once, but in a staggered manner, the newest version goes to Korean TV sets, and the oldest version to the US TV sets:
1. South Korea - the newest version
2. EU - version n-1
3. UK/AUS/NZ - version n-2
4. US - version n-3

Expected/Announced features to be delivered via firmware updates:

The first half of 2019
- Amazon Alexa integration - delivered in May 2019

The middle of 2019
- support for Apple AirPlay 2 and Apple HomeKit for easy streaming of video and audio content and connectivity to Apple’s smart home products - announced on 24 June, expected to be delivered in June+August 2019 but it was delayed a few days

The last months of 2019 - or further into 2020..., or never...
- support for 4K/2160p 120Hz content via HDMI 2.1 ports;
- support for HDCP 2.3;
- support for OLED Motion Pro or Black Frame Insertion (BFI) at 120Hz refresh and a 75/25/BFI cycle *1);

*1) - this feature was removed immediately before launch - it might resurface but do not hold your breath for it - long explanation = unofficial speculation about the OLED Motion Pro [email protected] removal is that [email protected] requires a 240Hz Effective Refresh Rate, the 2019 OLED C9 has a panel that supports 240Hz Effective Refresh Rate but the reason it is not being used is because LG needed to employ temporal dithering to resolve the flashing/overshoot issue that has plagued the 2018 OLED generation; in conclusion, [email protected] conflicts with temporal dithering and it was removed; if LG does find a way to cure the flashing/overshoot issues by not disabling the [email protected] this feature may come back, if not it will stay disabled forever - so keep your hopes low;

Expected support lifecycle via firmware updates:
- LG offers firmware update for its TVs on average during a two years span, so if the TV is a 2019 generation, you can expect to receive firmware updates from 2019 to 2020, but firmware updates can be released even for 3 years or more, especially critical security-related updates.
- LG has never offered updates for its WebOS (or the older NetCast) operating systems, so the new features are never backported to older WebOS operating systems - only security-related updates are released for minor or major versions of WebOS operating systems. So the LG OLED C9 will stay forever on the WebOS version 4.5.

Question

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

Wi-Fi

Problem: C9 will lose the wireless connection and you have to reconnect daily (but wired is stable);
Conditions: TV is connected to a 5GHz router;
Cause: (1) the router may be unstable on the 5GHz band; (2) the router has the 5GHz band set on a higher channel - over 100;
Resolve: (1) change the TV to the 2.4GHz band; (2) set the channel for the 5GHz band below 100 (ex. 40-50);

Display

Problem: C9 has a slight yellow tint on the image;
Conditions: the displayed image on the TV contains a lot of white, head-on viewing;
Cause: inherent WOLED panel nonuniformity;
Resolve: none, no need to change TV or panel;

Problem: I heard that OLED panels have a low lifetime of use before the panel will dim, making the image hard to see, compared with LCD based TVs;
Conditions: all day use;
Cause: OLED material natural degradation;
Resolve: based on the "U.S. media usage - time spent watching television 2020 | Statistic". Statista. 29 November 2018 study in 2017 alone, an average U.S. consumer spent 238 minutes (3h 58min) daily watching TV. The C9 OLED panel is based on a slightly modified base 2018 OLED panel, that panel has an expected LifeTime to 5% brightness decrease (LT95) of 15,000 hours, that translates the panel lifetime to 10 years before the panel will dim by 5%. If used for 12 hours, that will translate to a lifetime of 3.4 years before the panel will dim by 5%. A 5% dimness is the first level of observed brightness decrease, hardly a problem for an average consumer. If you are concerned about the OLED lifetime, you should wait for the expected better 2022 version of LG's OLED panel, that has a doubled lifetime compared with 2018/2019 OLED panels. See the attached diagrams.

Problem: How do I get the C9 to display low-lag content (13ms input lag);
Conditions: -;
Cause: -;
Resolve: 1) - Using the Game PQ mode; 2) Enable "Instant Game Response" - the HDMI ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode) feature and when you use an ALLM source, such as Microsoft Xbox One X the C9 will switch automatically to low-lag mode;

Problem: The C9 has the same display panel as the 2018 C9?;
Conditions: -;
Cause: -;
Resolve: No, the 2019 C9 has a slightly modified panel that the 2018 model, the sub-pixels surfaces are different, with larger red subpixel;

Remote

Problem: I want to disable the Magic Remote pointer - I don't want to use it! Can it be done?;
Conditions: -;
Cause: -;
Resolve: Yes, you can disable the Magic Remote pointer! To disable the pointer: Press "Back" button + "Home" remote buttons for about 30 seconds until the mouse pointer disappears. To enable the pointer: press "Scroll" button until LED power button is blinking, then the cursor will appear.;

Problem: There are some additional functions on the Magic Remote besides what is marked on it?;
Conditions: -;
Cause: -;
Resolve: Yes, there are, see below:
-- long-press the "Settings" button takes you to the picture settings;
-- long-press the "numeric 1-9 keypad" buttons allow you to map inputs;
-- long-press the "0" button on the numeric keypad allows you to view and edit the above-mentioned shortcuts stored for the 1-9 numeric buttons;
-- long-press the "Home" button pops up recently opened apps, and an 'X' button on top of each so you can close these apps running in the background;

Media playback

Problem: Do you know if the C9 supports embedded PGS subtitles in an MKV file?;
Conditions: internal media player, MKV file on USB storage;
Cause: -;
Resolve: No, the C9 does not support embedded PGS subtitles, you must use an external media player for that;

Audio

Problem: I have a 2018/2019 Denon/Marantz receiver, do I have to turn ON “HDMI Control” and “ARC” features to be able to use eARC (I don't need ARC or CEC functions)?;
Conditions: eARC set to ON on the TV;
Cause: The eARC link is controlled by the TV, not by the receiver!;
Resolve: As per 2018/2019 Denon/Marantz receivers manuals, "Using an eARC function-compatible television enables audio playback from the speaker connected to this unit, regardless of “HDMI Control” and “ARC” settings in the menu.";

Firmware/Software

Problem: Is it possible to roll back to an older firmware?;
Conditions: -;
Cause: -;
Resolve: No, you can go only forward - no official way to go back or to reset to the factory firmware version;

Problem: -;
Conditions: -;
Cause: -;
Resolve: -;

? problem with 03.60.04 update

Not sure if this is the place to post this.

This morning I did, as instructed by my C9, the recommended 03.60.04 update, and after that I noticed my "magic" remote microphone would no longer work as before...each time I tried to access the voice control, it would ask me to sign up for Google Assistant. I was not aware that Google Assistant was required for use of the LG remote voice control. LG support told me that they had no record of the software update causing this issue, and I was told that I did NOT need to sign up for Google Assistant in order for the remote voice control to function. I was hesitant to sign up for Google Assistant and agree to their privacy agreement, etc. if it was not necessary.

Unpairing and repairing the remote multiple times did not work, nor did powering down and doing a reset on the C9, nor did doing a reset on the remote. They told me I would need to do a reset to factory settings on the C9, which I was hesitant to jump into since I would have to reset all of my settings on the C9.

Also, interestingly, the option to "restore to factory or initial settings" was not an option. Tech support nor I could find it anywhere under Settings under General. It was not there. And, by the way, now the "Reset to Initial Settings" is appearing there under General. Not sure if eventually accepting Google Assistant had some effect on it, though not sure why.

Eventually they told me that they would need to send out a technician the following week.
I eventually decided to see what happened if I gave in and agreed to the terms and sign up for Google Assistant, though I did not move on to setting up and signing in to it on my mobile device.

I did so, and now my remote microphone is working!

Does anyone know if Google Assistant is indeed required for the remote voice control to work?
If not, has anyone found that the software update has altered this and they are having problems with Google Assistant being required for it to work?

Minor correction on the 6/8 channel LPCM issue — this can NOT be mitigated by altering the EDID with an HDFury or similar.

Is there a pdf owner's manual for this set? The so called "Owner's Manual" pdf is fairly useless, and the web based "User's Guide" which actually contains
information, is almost impossible to use.

Thanks,

No, owner's manuals are so 20th Century...
No TV manufacturer is bothering to maintain a true owner's manual anymore.

Samsung and TCL still both provide true pdf manuals. Sony no longer does, and it appears LG hasn't since the 7 series of 2017.

Excellent work on this thread! I'll add that the live zoom button on the remote (and entire feature) has been removed for 2019. See time 6:47 in this video to see how it worked in older models. No idea why they removed it. Sometimes you want to look at small background jokes in The Simpsons or something. Would be nice if they let you assign it to one of the extra color buttons and keep the feature.

Nice work. Is there a summary like this somewhere for the 2018 models? I haven’t seen it if there is. I just got a 2018 model and the main thread is over 18,000 posts long which pretty daunting to maneuver through.

No.
It seems that no one has done something like this for 2018 models.

Excellent thread. Minor quibble with the use of the term "HD audio" - the usage implies that "HD audio" means lossless, but I don't think that's correct.

ie
1990's Dolby Digital (DD) is non-HD audio (16 bit)
Dolby TrueHD is lossless HD audio (up to 24 bit)
Dolby Digital + is lossy HD audio (up to 24 bit)

similarly:
1990's DTS is non-HD audio (16 bit)
DTS-HD Master Audio is lossless HD audio (up to 24 bit)
DTS-HD High Resolution Audio is lossy HD audio (up to 24 bit)

Problem: I have a 2018/2019 Denon/Marantz receiver, do I have to turn ON “HDMI Control” and “ARC” features to be able to use eARC (I don't need ARC or CEC functions)?;
Conditions: eARC set to ON on the TV;
Cause: The eARC link is controlled by the TV, not by the receiver!;
Resolve: As per 2018/2019 Denon/Marantz receivers manuals, "Using an eARC function-compatible television enables audio playback from the speaker connected to this unit, regardless of “HDMI Control” and “ARC” settings in the menu.";

Does this imply that for 2018/19 Yamaha receivers that to use eARC you still have to enable HDMI control and ARC setting in the menus? I really hate HDMI control due to how it does not play nice with my Harmony remote that wants control over all.

LG OLED65C9, Yamaha RX-A3080, Paradigm Reference Studio 80 Mains, Atmos 5.1.4 config, Panasonic UB820, PS4 Pro, Apple TV 4K

Yes, it seems that at least the 2018 Yamaha receivers do require HDMI Control/CEC=ON on the receiver for eARC to work. Probably the 2019 Yamaha receivers behave the same way.

On 2018/2019 Denon/Marantz receivers you can turn off both CEC and ARC and eARC still function.
