Congrats man! Can you please give us very detailed impressions when you get it? Oh and pics too! I know pics don't do the picture justice, but it at least gives us an idea how it looks! Thanks!

No, no chance of that. These will be off of the same 8.5G WOLED line in Paju (Korea) that produced the 88" prototypes.

But it's possible/likely that the first 48" WOLEDs we see will be off of the new line at Guangzhou.

Guangzhou is supposedly ramping up with Multi Modal Glass (MMG) technology, which means LGD can produce 2 48" WOLED panels on the same 8.5G sheet used to produce 3 65" WOLED panels or 2 77" WOLED panels (hence reducing the cost of 65" and 77" WOLEDs produced in Guangzhou by 25%).

Once the MMG technology is proven in Guangzhou, LGD will also deploy it in Paju, but that probably doesn't happen until next year.

First, congrats!

Second, what I bolded is bizarre, and would absolutely be a non-starter for me, price notwithstanding. Such a weird thing for them to do IMO.

Don't get me wrong, when it's time for me to replace my 88" FALD LED, it will be an 88" 8K OLED or an even larger LED. But if I can't hang it on my wall: no sale.

That was a direct quote from the retailer and it doesn't really make sense to me either. I don't see how the stand could already be attached for shipping. So the only thing keeping it from being wall mounted would be lack of mounting holes. And that would indeed be silly.

I actually prefer the stand but I know everyone doesn't. This is why you have guinea pigs like me so I will definitely let you know what's what.

They are saying end of September again.

Being the eternal pessimist I'm expecting this to keep getting delayed until the end of the year before they cancel it, and then either re-announce at the next CES or just drop it altogether.

But like I said I'll post here as soon as there is any news.

This is literally the third time they have put out a press release saying they are "rolling out".

The release says "this month" and I was told 3rd week of Sep by the retailer a few days ago so looks like we are on target.

I'm supposed to be one of the first on the list and thankfully the pre-order price was significantly less than what they are quoting now.

BTW the official site has been updated and as per discussion above it now says "OLED88Z9PUA is not wall mountable."

Good news everyone. Here is yet another press release about availability.
https://www.prnewswire.com/news-rele...300915703.html

Interestingly the website has now been updated with a $29,999.99 retail price. I guess they didn't go thru with the price increase.

P.S. I have inquired with LG thru multiple channels if this TV will support G-Sync. Got 2 replies that it is too new to know. And one reply that they would do more research and get back to me.

I think for me personally, at this size I would be willing to ditch projectors. 88' will still have plenty of immersion. I have a 110' projection screen, but the picture quality of this 88' tv is just superb in every way. Any projector cannot compare. The only issue for me is of course, price. Maybe in two years it will go down enough so I can afford it.

Wall nonmountability is strange to say the least (reason might be heat dissipation) but also LG should swallow its pride and follow Samsung

moving electronics to a separate box connected with the display by thin cable. Requirements for heat dissipation could mean the resulting display could

not be attached like wallpaper to the wall but still require some spacing and heat fins.

Wow, it can't be wall mounted? That stand does not look good, imo. They should at least make it matte black to match the color of the tv. Hopefully in the future other versions of this tv will have a regular stand and be wall mountable.

This is according to the specs:

NOTE

  • * OLED88Z9PUA is not wall mountable.

Reason is most likely heat dissipation due to huge size. Making it wall mountable would require cooling fins. Then it would not look very thin nullifying marketing pitch of unique advantage of OLED.

Is this an engineering problem that we can hope with reasonable certainty can be addressed? If not, it's really going to put the brakes on any price compression we might've hoped for for OLED screens of this size (or larger...) no? I understand that price compression was probably going to be slow regardless, but, if they *must* include a stand like this, I could see it limiting what was already going to be a low unit volume and cutting it into a tiny fraction thereof.

Stuck up, half witted, scruffy looking, nerf herder.

My guess is a 88" piece of glass has to be supported from the bottom and rest at a right angle to the support. And I doubt the stand itself adds a lot to the cost.

I agree that the stand probably doesn't add much in terms of BOM, but the logistics of it creates a different set of costs.

Regardless, if they can't fix this, it's going to seriously hinder uptake IMO.

Stuck up, half witted, scruffy looking, nerf herder.

It would be easy to design a sturdy frame allowing wall mounting though then the display would not be very thin, especially with heat dissipation radiator. Decision to go with such crazy "original" design could be influenced by the 88" potential customer base of people with tons of money, they seem to like "originally" looking products to differentiate from the standard crowd.

I was considering updating my 2017 W77 but no wall mount is a deal breaker. I do wonder who the product managers at LG are, and why they think there are people who will drop five figures on their high end products but still want soundbars and don't want wall mounts.
Ken Ross likes this.

Could be. But many wall mounts have a tendency for the TV to lean forward and this could put a lot of stress in the center of the glass. Particularly articulating wall mounts.
