I would like to know if it is possible to record HD channels from a Sky box in realtime, not how to capture existing HD programmes that have been pre-recorded by the Sky box.
I have read in numerous forums that devices such as the Hauppauge HD-DVR can capture HD channels via component video in full HD. Is this true? I would have thought not as component is analogue and therefore there would be loss of quality of the HD source.
Also, I have read conflicting views as to the ability of HDMI to capture HD content from a Sky box - some forums say yes, some no. I would prefer such a solution as Blackmagic Design's Intensity devices have HDMI inputs and can support surround sound whereas the Hauppauge does not. However, it has been said that the HD content cannot be captured via HDMI as it is encrypted with HDCP.
Is this true of the FTA HD channels, BBC, ITV and Channel 4? (fyi BBC HD & ITV HD stay on without a Sky viewing card inserted in the Sky box, whereas Channel 4 HD does not - does this mean C4 HD is encrypted, thereby allowing me to record BBC HD & ITV HD only, via HDMI, not C4 HD?)
If HDMI won't work, is component video the only way to do this? I don't mind giving up the surround sound but can it really capture the FTA HD channels satisfactorily and is it in HD?
