They pushed through a new update last night (94.1.2), so maybe things will go back to normal. Kudos's to AVS forum for providing a place to thrash these thing out. I wish there was an equally good venue for medical problems.

If you exchange a Xfinity DVR, only your new recording will play in 5.1. Older shows from the cloud, will only play in Dolby Digital 2.0😡

Hi everyone,

I am planning on becoming an Xfinity customer and would appreciate any advice regarding the best DVR or box to choose. I have a C8 4k TV. I don't really need a DVR, so to cut costs, I may just go with a box. But no boxes support 4k currently from what I am seeing. Do you recommend a specific set top box model (XG2, Xi3, XiD, etc) or do you believe that the xg1v4 DVR is worthwhile for future-proofing? I don't care about the netflix 4k aspect, but want the best picture quality and a speedy box. I've seen various threads debating on the best resolution settings on the boxes and whether it is better to upscale on the box or the TV itself.

Thanks for the advice!

Just get the xg1v4 DVR. I found the guide & the overall OS to be sluggish on the older system. The cable box will do all the up scaling to whatever resolution you set it to. There is no ability to sen out a native format & allow the tv to upscale. However if you have a 4k tv & send-out 1080p it will upscale that to the tv's native resolution of 4k. If you don't go with a DVR package & don't pay the service fee, I don't believe you can record anything. I may be wrong, but it will be in the fine print. I would research it from their website vs talking to a rep.

Is anyone trying to watch the Women's world cup soccer in 4K with the Xfinity X1 (XG1V4)? I've visually compared the HD feed with the 4K feed and I don't find much difference. Is their 4K really 4K? It seemed to me when the Olympics was in 4K, there was a vast difference in the feeds.

It is in 4K but not in HDR which makes a big difference. Because it is live it can't be in HDR10. I assume it is using HLG but Comcast I assume has not yet implemented it.

All good here. Looks amazing and much better than everything that is in HD (or quazi HD) on mine. There is no HDR. No other "Comcast" OnDemand content to check if that is just broken but all other HDR10 sources on the box are working. Depending on your display you may not see much of a difference. I only have a 55" and I can see the difference. Most of it being full 4k content as opposed to most of the compressed crap they broadcast er. transmit. I did have a couple issues; I could not say "watch woman's world cup" or "watch world cup" it just goofed out. I was able to say "4k" and both the live and OnDemand came up. I was able to watch the US score goal 8 to zero against Thailand a few min. ago. Audio is in all Spanish of course since it's Telemundo that is broadcasting. Also my box told me I have to update my TV and/or adjust my settings when I first tried watch which is odd since we have been watching The Expanse in 4k with no issues. I went into settings, all was well and went back in and it worked. The olympics were in HDR10 but I don't know about the live streams as that was ending right about the time I got my first Comtastic 4k box and it was less than reliable a year ago. Oh also the audio was coming through as DD+/Atmos (though I don't have an Atmosphere set-up so no way in knowing if the extra matrixed channels are there. I was just happy to see the bright blue HD audio light on my Denon AVR). Sound was very good also. No crackeling and distortion that I usually get from this service and box.

If anyone does get HDR please let me/us know as I may need to reset my box (again, :sigh.

Are you sure about this? My understanding is that Comcast is using HLG for broadcasts, but they are not capable of that at the STB end. My TV is HLG capable (still waiting to see anything or content that is). When I spoke to Comcast engineers last they stated that live HDR content that is in HLG would be converted to HDR10 for our boxes. I'm not sure if the magic (will)happen(s) on the box or in the stream on the back end but that is what I was lead to believe. I would guess they are not ready for this yet??? I'm pretty sure that the Olympics and World Cup's that have been broadcast were in HDR10 but I rarely watch live content.

Thanks PaulGo and mr.kludge. I was watching the Fox 4K feed, not telemundo, so English. But I don't think that the video was much different.

The Olympics in 4K were delayed by 24 hours and converted to HDR10. Live broadcasts cannot be in HDR10. HLG is a type of HDR that can be broadcast live.

Interesting Fox feed was not an option for me but I see that it might not be on at the moment. I'm getting entirely different search results now. Only Fox OnDemand content for me is on YouTube. Perhaps since I dont't have the sports and entertainment pack??? I guess it just is not on live right now as there isn't anything coming up.

Yep all correct and thanks for reminding me. I was only able to enjoy the OnDemand content after the fact which I wish was still there. Might need to hunt for it? Anyhow I was just relaying how live broadcast HDR is supposed to work for us in the future. I specifically asked about Dolby Vision and live/HLG broadcasts and was told that the hardware is not capable. Not sure if that means upgrades to hardware in the future or what or if we will just be stuck with what we have? I find it odd that they would be short sided enough that HLG and DV were not in the plan and just s/w, f/w updates like on most everything else. I realize it has a to do with the video chips and baked in f/w that they have but still seems odd to me. My now dirt old '17 year (which is really a '16 year TV as far as tech and capabilities) continues to get HDR, audio and casting capabilities added each year (and sometimes multiple times a year).

So what you might be saying is that in no world is live HDR possible without HLG? Still does not seem right since I can dial up anything streaming and get HDR10 and sometimes DV(--just not on the v4 box). A live stream should be able to be transcoded HLG to HDR and or DV on the fly and delivered to the end-user. Guess I need to buy a HDR book to go with my HD-DVD and BD ones ;-)

At least for some of the matches, the telemundo feed had a pregame element, so it became available to view first. The Fox or FS1 feed didn't seem to have a pregame element, so it didn't become even visible to select until just before the match started.

Hi all I just upgraded to the XG1v4 ultra HD d. vr. I can't seem to get the highest resolution. I can only get the UHD 30p not the 60p. When I switch to 60p the picture gets all funky looking. Like a wrong resolution on a computer video card. I have a JVC RS2000 true 4K projector so I know the projector can receive the signal. I have 33 ft optical hdmi cable that has no problem with ultra HD 4k blu ray discs. Does xfinity not broadcast in 4k 60p?

Almost, if not all, cable network content is 720p, regardless of source. The locals I believe are still carried at their native signal (which can be 720p or 1080i). So the X1 box just upscales that 720p content to 2160p and sends it out.

Streaming media (like Netflix, Amazon, etc.) is broadcast in whatever the native format is (720p, 1080p, 2160p).

Some folks set their X1 boxes to 720p and let their display handle the upscaling.

Understood. I just wanted to use the Netflix through Xfinity to stream in 4K as I have the upgraded 4K subscription to Netflix.

I’m on the boat of saying theses so called 4K games don’t look good at all. They’re just as bad as the ABC and some ESPN feeds. There’s no way in the world these are 4k transmissions. Some of the shots are down right blurry on my LG 77C8. Here’s to hoping they figure it out and the next big sporting event(s) look much better.

LG 77C8, Sony 75x940E, LG 65B7, LG 65EF9500, LG 55E6, LG 55UB8200, 2 TCL 49S515's

I have the XG1v4 connected to my 65" Sony TV and it is connected at 4K 60p. The 4K content from Netflix thru the XG1v4 looks identical to getting it directly through my TV (Android TV). The Olympic content looked fantastic in 4K HDR. The current soccer content looks very sharp and clear but unfortunately it is not in HDR.

In my experience, there is no specific 4K channel. Most of the available content is via the Comcast apps for Amazon Prime, Hulu or Netflix. Otherwise it seems to be special programs from time to time like the recent women's World Cup games. You can use the voice remote to ask about available 4K programming currently available.

Netflix / Blackouts!

Thanks for the FREE Netflix account. Now only $3 more for 4k/HDR!!

Now my cable is having a few BLACK OUT moments.
The only new device is the Xi6 box.
Anyone else having this issue?

EPL, NFL, and CFB are finally going to get me to jump into the 4k world. Debating between picking up an Xi6 or XG1v4 exclusively for watching 4k sports (currently using a TiVo Bolt 3TB and have no plans to replace it). Can anyone tell me if these live 4k airings are DVRable? Are they available ON Demand in 4k after the fact? As much as I would love to set my schedule around sports, life just doesn't work that way.

Edit: After doing some more reading it looks like the Xi6 requires an X1 host, so right now there is no standalone 4K STB. My questions above still apply.

I have been trying to get a Xi6 box for a couple of months with no luck so far. Maybe I'll try again in the next couple of weeks.

I have the XG1v4 and Xi6. No sports in 4K I can find either live or On Demand. Most content is either Netflix, Amazon Prime, or Smithsonian Channel. A few other random things too.

Xfinity is doing some IP only video in select areas where you can use only the wireless box but need their gateways. You can call to check if available in your area.

Here is the link to the list of upcoming 4k events:

https://www.xfinity.com/support/articles/uhd-4k-faqs

Im curious if the XG1v4 can record and if not watch these after the fact on demand. If it's live only and if you miss it too bad, then can't really justify renting the X1 in that case.

Im curious if the XG1v4 can record these.
I’ll set the upcoming EPL match and let you know!
I tried to set the recording from the voice remote search for EPL to find the 4K version and got a message that record was not available. No channel number displayed just the network name so I think it’s a live stream only.

I went into the guide for my local NBC HD channel and can set to record. I don’t think you can set the 4K to record as it is streaming but that’s just a guess.

Im curious if the XG1v4 can record and if not watch these after the fact on demand. If it's live only and if you miss it too bad, then can't really justify renting the X1 in that case.
Thanks for the link.
