I could try to help you from EE standpoint, but I have only European "DVR+" eg HDT-610R, what have not the same HW.

Thanks. It looks like far too much trouble, so I guess I'll forget about it.

Need to format?

I've relabeled the external hard drive and Windows sees it but when I click on it to explore I get a message that I need to format the disk before I can use it. I don't want to do that because I assume that will wipe it. Am I missing a step? Thanks.

I used the Ext2Fsd program to assign two letters to each of the external hard drive partitions, so to me they are relabeled. Now the PC can see them but says they need to be formatted. I am assuming that would wipe them so I didn't do it. Just wondering if this is a common problem and if there might be a solution; I didn't see it anywhere else in this thread.

Well, you're going by a path of regular Windows user … do not continue it. Discard any request from the OS regarding the HDD.

After Ext2Fsd assigned labels (it is not re-labeled per se) run pachinko's program - forget about Windows for while

Thank you. However, I got the same message about reformatting when I tried to select the drive from Pachinko's program through the drop down menu. The external works fine on the Channel Master and I do disconnect it through the device before physically disconnecting it. It's fine again once re-connected. Sounds like it's not a common problem, which does help to know.

I really would like to help you, but I just to have the time. What version of EXT2FSD are you using? I do NOT recommend the newer versions. Try the old version 0.64 (that's what I use).

Thanks all for looking at it. I was using ext2fsd64, and the partitions did appear in the directory with letters (screen shot attached). I would note in looking at the help/about menu I see that ext2fsd shows as not started while ext2fsd seems to be running (also attached). Not sure if that affected the functionality since it did assign letters to the two drives, but I still could not access the hard drive from the PC since the PC said I had to format.

Unfortunately, over this weekend I had to re-format the same external hard drive through the Channel Master so I lost all of the recordings I was trying to save. I got an error code on the drive and disconnected it through the CM menu, and then it would not reconnect without formatting. Too bad. But thank you to all who tried to help!

Yes, I tried both and they each said that the disc needed to be re-formatted. I could not access the contents of the drive.
