Men in Black: International (2019) 3D Theater Showing 8 /10

Every so often a movie gets so thoroughly shellacked by critics that, when you see it and realize it's actually quite good, you can't help but feel sorry for the filmmakers. Stars: Chris Hemsworth, Tessa Thompson, Kumail Nanjiani & Liam Neeson With a cast like this how crappy could it be . Its not . I enjoyed the wacky Men in Black: International !!!!

Time for a receiver upgrade. The Harman Kardon AVR 254 has served me well. Sounds amazing still but it can't do 4k and I think the video out are getting glitchy. Time for an Onkyo. Not a super high end one like AVS loves but it should work in my space. The office/study is only 20 feet by 15 so the TX-NR686 should be suitable. First Onkyo for me.

Watched two movies...

First one was I Am Mother. Thought this was great. I like movies that are "contained" (i.e. few characters and only a few locations). Second movie was The Wicker Man (1973). This was some weird, but good, stuff.

That should be fine , just have plenty of ventilation, lots of modern receivers run warm these days. Changing speakers too ?

Speakers later. The HK runs hot too. Hopefully by years end I've got a new set of speakers and a new 4k set. I'm not in a rush at all.

I'm getting really tired of having to grab the Yamaha remote every time a DD+ video plays since it's early version of ARC seldom detects the change. So I'm thinking of getting a Pioneer as there have been so closeouts on last year's models. Pioneer knows how to cater to film buffs.

"UFO" is a smart sci-fi movie on Amazon. Stars Alex Sharp, Ella Purnell, David Strathairn and Gillian Anderson. About a college science student trying to uncover a coverup of a UFO sighting at the Cincinnati airport. Well worth the watch:

I caught the Redbox guy stocking a couple kiosks this morning and putting up the "Us" poster so I asked him if it was going to be available UHD and he said yes.

Arg! He gave me misinformation. No UHD version of "Us" at Redbox today.

Watch "Astral" on Hulu last night. Stars Frank Dillane ("Fear the Walking Dead"). I like movies like this but it is pretty much a UK B-movie. Three pendulums. Listed as HD but the picture quality was more like 540p which it might have been (a PAL format). Also available on Hoopla and for rent and sale on the usual suspects.

Spoiler!

Onkyo.

Sounds amazing. I may up the speakers sooner.

The HK had a lot of video options, upscaler etc. The Onkyo is all about audio. Perhaps that means it isn't molesting the video.

Most video processing can be done on a TV and doesn't need to be done in a receiver these days.

Yeah the HK had a Faroudja processor in it. It could take a DVD and make it look HD like a pro

Been running a TX-NR575 with RSL CG3 C, L, and R + a Speedwoofer 10S and supplemented with cheap Dayton Audio 4.5" surrounds. For the size of my living room, a nice little budget system that sounds great and shakes the walls a little bit. Replaced a 10 year old Onkyo HTIB that served me well.

Happy is whacked out craziness. It's out there in the stratosphere for sure. There really is nothing else like it on tv. Would have been nice to get one more season.

Samara Weaving is great at comedy if this is a dark comedy. Her uncle is Hugo Weaving ("The Matrix").

Anyone else having problems with Shudder? I'm get a "Stream not available" the last couple nights and still there this morning. Time to contact support.

I decided to watch the first episode of the "Jinn" series on Netflix last night. Wound up binging all the rest of the episodes (around 25-30 minutes each). I like "cultural horror" and this one delivered. It could have verged into CW territory with soap but didn't. Four scorpions.

I thought she was great in The Babysitter. I didn't realize it until I looked her up but she was in a few episodes of Ash vs Evil Dead. I hope she does more horror.

I went to a Double Feature at my local cinema. Polar opposite films.

Child's Play (2019) Cinema Showing

It does not suck !! The acting is excellent. That's right I could not believe it either . This re-imagining of Chucky's origins manages to be both crazier and more level-headed than the original. The result is a surprisingly entertaining, gory delight. Child's Play is pure entertaining fun for the horror fan.

Thanks for the review. Aubrey Plaza has been on the talk show circuit promoting it. It looked like just another unnecessary remake but I'll have to reconsider it now.

Watched two movies...

Yesterday, I re-watched Jurassic World (2015). Been a while since I've watched this and really liked it. I think it's better than Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. Sound design/mix is top notch.

Today, I watched Se7en. Not sure when was the last time I watched it but I had forgotten much of the movie (except the ending). Great stuff this was. I watched the remastered version and holy well, the sound mix was awesome. The surround speakers were in constant use throughout the movie. Not sure if the original was like this. That ending is still awesome.

The Onkyo appears to have provided a boost in pq despite not processing video. I'm.finally getting a resolution change on 1080p 24fps movies. The HK bumped it up to 60 and you couldn't bypass it.

It also does a damn fine job of auto selecting audio modes for whatever surround codec you send it. If you're in stereo mode for like YouTube and then start a DTS movie it switches over. The HK stayed on what you set it to which required fiddling with the remote.
