A film only needs a very limited theatrical release to be in contention. After that it becomes a matter of the producers getting as many "screener DVDs" as possible into the hands of voting members. Besides the feature, who really knows how many "vote for me" bonuses are included.

Then it gets crazy with full-page ads and whatnot in all the tinsel-town rags (back-rubs, back-scratches, etc). To the winners, hefty pay raises, or the empowerment to demand them, leaving the average moviegoer with no voice in the matter.

Sound familiar?

The trick is not to take Oscars seriously. I sure didn't, as shown on previous page.

We have reached a state with the AAs where they have been effectively neutered.
The B.S., manufactured by P.C. Police, "controversies" are ruining the entire process.

First, it was the Gone Girl fiasco.
Women's Groups cried foul that Hollywood might reward a movie where the baddie is a female.
In turn, it caused the spineless, sackless Boys (TPTB) to dump the movie from contention.

Secondly, there was the crying about the lack of racial diversity.
I find it odd there is an implication racial quotas are needed for the Academy Awards.
Or are is message only movies about/for minorities are worthy?
Somehow, everyone has forgotten last year's BP was 12 Years a Slave.

Lastly, there was Sean Penn's joke while announcing BP last night.
"Who gave this S.O.B his green card?"
Penn and Iñárritu have been friends for a very long time and worked together on 21 Grams.
Anyone who knows anything about Penn knows he is the exact opposite of a racist.

This stupidity has gotten completely out of hand and has ruined it for me.

I won't be taking the time next year to put a thread like this together.
It's no longer fun.

He wasn't. He's always like that, and has always been shy, sometimes coming across as awkward (like Johnny Depp).

As for the green card joke, I still can't believe some people took it literally! People have no sense of humor! ...At least the audience laughed.

GaGa went through the falling off the bubble thing and is making all the right moves to distance herself from the rest of her peers and do good work.

No, you are entitled to your musical desires. Now, I actually, usually, hate to see her sing anything but I really like to listen to her sing everything. She has made a career of being outlandish looking and it worked for her much like it did for Madonna. My thinking is the Lady is hugely talented and doesn't need all the hoopla. But then again, talent doesn't get it in the music business. You need a presence to get anything to sell....

Not at all. I always considered her a Madonna imitator and didn't listen to any of her music until PBS had a Bennett/Gaga performance on a few years ago. Out of curiosity, and to break through my closed-minded bias toward her, I set the DVR and have been a fan of her "new look and sound" ever since. The chemistry between Bennett and Gaga is great.

After watching/listening to the video this morning, I couldn't agree more.
Her talent doesn't require shallow theatrics to impress (Ms. Oink just said the same thing).

I have two albums from her (yeah yeah...my daughter! ), and it's always nice to hear a lot less autotune in her songs than her peers'.

Agree. I didn't really pay attention to her as an artist and probably still won't as her music is not really in my interest but I can still be very impressed about her pipes. I had a similar reaction to Joan Osborne in Standing in the Shadows of Motown.

As to the issue of racism etc. I agree that it is disappointing that that is a focus. I definitely thought Selma deserved Best Picture (or Boyhood) and deserved actor nominations but I don't attribute the oversights to racism. I am totally used to the Academy being idiots about what they nominate and don't nominate as well as awards. I didn't really see that that was an issue in this forum so would hope that Oink will continue this thread next year. It at least leads to interesting discussions. Forget the noise in the outside world.

Sorry, I'm just frustrated with the P.C. Police continuing to gain influence in our national discussion to the point where awards for artistic merit are being affected.

For what it's worth, I haven't sat thru a Grammy broadcast in 20 years, and a dozen years for a complete Oscar show. I've been digusted for years w the behind the scenes classism.

Good, bad or ugly, anyone now can make a film or CD, but the "statuettes" are only for the well-heeled in the elitist club.

The Grammys are horrible but I think the worst is the Emmys other than sometimes great presenters:
